  • In this episode, we will cover the catastrophe on the Kahovska dam, focusing on the consequences of the terroristic act, the world's response, a lack of it from the russian side and the devastating effects on locals and wildlife.
A few weeks ago, in the third episode of this podcast, we discussed the environmental damage caused by russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine's soil, rivers, Black Sea, and local wildlife. At that time, the total number of reported cases of environmental damage exceeded 2,300, and the estimated cost of environmental damage was $51.45 billion.
BUT in the middle of the night, around 2-3am on June 6, 2023, there was information that russian forces blew up the Nova Kakhovka hydroelectric dam on the Dnipro River in the Kherson region (southern Ukraine).
As a result, on the right bank of the Dnipro River (Ukraine-controlled Kherson area), around 16 000 local citizens were at risk of flooding in the area of 80 villages. The local government cut off the electricity and initiated rescue missions all over the area. Zaporizka Nuclear Power Station allegedly was not in danger, despite its close proximity to the catastrophe.
