@@severinneukom it's totally worth getting the tuners. If you listen to the Carnegie Hall album where Earl plays Earl's breakdown you'll hear him play it without the d-tuners and you'll see/hear that it's not such an easy task. Pop for the tuners.. thank me later.
@@severinneukomI tried to do it for awhile without d tuners but it was almost impossible for me to get the notes in tune every time. I got some Schallers and they were definitely worth it.
Nice video. Do you need the D tuners for this song and others such as earls breakdown? Or are They just more helpful? Ive seen people use forwards and backwards slides instead of tuners as well
@@JimPankey True. Slides dont sound the same. Off topic but I'm working on speeding up fireball mail at the moment, any advice where I should go next? Maybe balled of Jed or dueling banjos?
You have a Stelling? Why on earth are you still playing that Recording King?! Just kidding, lol! How do you mount your camera? It seems to move with the banjo like it's mounted to it. Great lesson, by the way!
+Nashvolk5 I've had the Stelling since 1982; it was my primary banjo for a very long time. Camera mount... It's just hand held by a student most of the time. I used RUclips's stabilizing feature if they were pretty jerky, so it looked in on the banjo and everything else looks like it moves around. Try not to get seasick! :) Glad you liked the lesson. Hopefully I can get motivated to post a few more soon.
Jim Pankey - Awesome! I think the camera rotating with the banjo gives a cool effect! I also love the tone you pull out of that Stelling. (Well, any banjo really.)
Could you tell me how to set my D tuners there's two set screws there's a high note and a low note could you tell me what the tuning is no one has told in any of their videos how to set them or where to sell them thank you for your response back
+Darren Hoffman Loosen all four side thumbscrews one-half a turn. The Keith Tuners will operate like standard tuning pegs. 2. Tune the banjo to the open G tuning (second string - B. third string - G). Firmly tighten the black side thumbscrews, which will set the high stops. Now, tune the second string down to A and the third string down to F# (put the banjo into open D tuning) and firmly tighten the uncolored side thumbscrews. This will set the low stops. The tuners will now operate as “D-tuners”. and will not turn past the high or low stops.
Hit first string. Then hit second and drop the Ab to an A. Hit the 3rd and drop it to an F#. Then the 4th. Hit the 1st. Then hit 2nd and raise it back to B, then hit 3rd and raise it back to G
I did not tab this. The biggest favor you can do for yourself is to struggle with the video. Slow it down, back it up, repeat the parts and try to copy it with your banjo in hand.
Very cool! I am a beginner on banjo but have become obsessed with learning it! I saw a video of Don playing one that looked similar but now I know it isn't. Thanks!
I’m sure. These older videos were often shot by students and I shared them later for the public to see. By the time someone is ready for FHS seeing the right hand shouldn’t be an issue. Thanks for watching.
You’re too fast paced for a beginner like myself to understand each note. You’re doing fine for more advanced players, but at least play at dummy speed first.
If you are a beginner, then this tune is not for you. If you're ready for this tune, then you're ready for it at the slow speed I demoed it at. If that's not slow enough, then you'll need to develop more skill. Or... you could use RUclips's slowdown feature and slow it down to 25%. Or... you could do like I did and learn it from the Flatt & Scruggs version at full speed.

Hell of a job man.
Thanks!
For real man

Glad to help!
Great work ! I’m loving it, thanks for these lessons Jim great style and teaching approach
Awesome video, helped me so much, I have been working on this tune forever seems like, Thank you Jim, Keep up the amazing Videos.
Perfect thank you for responding that's just what I needed to know keep the videos coming I'm learning a lot
i got a banjo today for Christmas, this is one of my favorite banjo songs. So I really want to learn how to play it.
Probably not the best place to start, but certainly doable in the future. Maybe tackle my beginning lessons first?
@@JimPankey yes, definitely not a first song to learn. But I am definitely going to try at it in the future.
Sweet cross on the banjo
Thanks for your good work 😊
Thank you for watching ☺️
@@JimPankey I work on playing flint hill special . This is a good help
Great walk through. Thanks for posting.
Very nice
Thanks
Ilive in Kansas about 10 miles from the rangeland known as the Flint Hills;the last surviving natural "Tallgrass" prairie land in the Great Plains
Flint Hill is the community Earl grew up in. It is in Boiling Springs North Carolina.
Awesome tutorial is right, so easy to learn from! Please do Dear old Dixie!
that would also be a very cool live lesson .. I definitely have to learn that .. 😊
Have you got d-tuners? You can totally do it.
no I did not. would like to be able to do it without D-Tuners .. maybe that way I learn to tune my banjo better by ear 😊

If you want that sound then the only answer is the D-tuners. Sure, you can use slides, but they sound like slides.
@@JimPankey True. Slides dont sound the same. Off topic but I'm working on speeding up fireball mail at the moment, any advice where I should go next? Maybe balled of Jed or dueling banjos?
Either of those would be good, or even Clinch Mountain Backstep.
Hey Jim just wondering the tuning pegs that come on the rk-r20 I am wondering can I play this on it because I have only a rk-r20
You'll need a set of d-tuners... either Cheat-a-keys, Keiths, or Schallers.

Do you have a video on the turn down thing part?
Well... no, but if you have d-tuners it’s pretty easy to figure out. Most folks discover it as soon as they get them set.
How do you get the D-Tuners to work? I have schlatters but can only get one of them to work.
Could you please do an instructional video on the beginning part?
The part that I explain right in the beginning seconds? I dunno, seems like it’s all right there.
@@JimPankey Is it just tune down to A and F#?

Idk why but that tuning peg part seems intimidating lol.. 😅
It’s easier with the special d tuners.

R u doing this without detuner things?
No, I have Keith tuners on it.
PLEASE teach this again but a little bit slower in the bearded Jim Pankey style
Thank you !!!!
Nope… all the info is there. If you’re ready for this tune you shouldn’t have any problem with it.
Is there a tab?? How can i learn this in depth??
I did not tab this. The biggest favor you can do for yourself is to struggle with the video. Slow it down, back it up, repeat the parts and try to copy it with your banjo in hand.
Thanks I’ll give it a try. I’ve always wanted to do that but I’ve never had the courage to.
Is that Don Stover's banjo your're playing?
The Stelling belonged to Ralph Stanley; it's the one in the Masters of the 5-String book. As far as I know I'm the only owner of the Price. :)
Very cool! I am a beginner on banjo but have become obsessed with learning it! I saw a video of Don playing one that looked similar but now I know it isn't. Thanks!
hello. do yout have the banjo tab ? i can't get it nowhere...
You can find Tab for Flint Hill Special in Earl Scruggs banjo tutorial book.
do you have a link to this written out?
I don't have it written out. I rarely (if ever) use tabs with my students, so it's unusual for me to have anything tabbed.
Jim Pankey Is it possible to get it tabbed out . I live in Montana and would really like to learn it.
May have been a little more helpful if the right hand was visible
