Every time I listen to this, the first few notes makes me think that he's going to play the Beatles "Oh Darling". Contains all the sleaze and abandon that makes Alex Chilton so special among Rock 'n Roll visionaries. He made this song his own, that's for sure.
Who in the world could ever cut the Stones on one of their greatest originals and also play an even nastier guitar than Keith Richards? You have the privilege of looking at him smoking a cig. Alex, we all miss ya.
The genius of this is he stripped away everything from the song but the attitude and the basic riff. There is a swagger to the original, but this takes that swagger and turns it into a full out strut.
I wouldn't say it's "genius" to strip down a song (after all, every song starts out in a stripped-down form), but this is certainly a spirited performance.
I was lucky enough to see him live on one of his infrequent sojourns, and I can honestly say the guy marched to his own beat which is why some people will never get him...I don't necessarily think he was a genius, but he certainly was a one of a kind, and that's good enough for me
the way i love you, big mack, big mack, is the way alex chilton sounds every time he puts poetry into our shitty world. it is the way he looks when he light up a ciggie. it is the way his bangs flop down into his eyes. it is this, all of these things about alex chiltin, all of them are the way that i love you and for the way that i always loved you.
Chilton's voice has more of a rawness. I remember the song, The Letter when I was a kid. It's sad Chilton died at 59 yrs old. Unfortunately, he did not deal with his alcohol and drug addiction.
@@Karen-dk1ec Drugs and alcohol isn't what killed him. The book about him "A Man Called Destruction" suggests that he only really dealt with drugs in the late 70s and drinking until about the mid or late 80s. I think it was more the fact that he smoked 4 packs of cigrettes a day for like 25 years.
All I can say is "GOT DAMN IT"!!! Alex hate that it took me this long to enjoy your superb sound. I also enjoy this soulful song with the "The Box Tops - "People Make The World" (1967) Thanks Again.
If I shut my eyes I'm getting Richard Hell, iggy pop... Etc... Just wish I was in CBGB's sometime in the early 70's...lol or even that I'd ever been to CBGB's ever ha ha this is so cool it's freezing... ☺️
I agree. Obviously Kurt had his influences from the previous generation of Aberdeen musicians and there were a lot of them in the Puget Sound area in the 70s
Good for sure and I love the 'Free' like drums, but sorry y'all it just doesn't cut it with me, the original is still the best. Each to their own I guess.
This is funky, dirty, and wonderful, but it strikes me as inferior to the Stones' original because Chilton made a point of doing away with the elements that made that recording anthemic. To my ears, the irony of this version is that, if, say, Jimmy Reed or Elmore James had originally recorded "Jumpin' Jack Flash," the cover by the Animals or the early Stones would sound like this.
Great cover, stands the test of time. I think the opening ascending 4 note hook sequence was a mistake by the producer however, I don't like the feeling it evokes. It needs a hooks that creates more tension
I love everything about this except avoiding the central riff. What he plays ain't an improvement which is too bad because everything else is genius and raw af.
the best version of Jumpin' Jack Flash I have ever heard.
Seeing Big Star and The Stones just before both Chilton and Watts died - both excellent gigs. I feel very lucky to have seen both.
Every time I listen to this, the first few notes makes me think that he's going to play the Beatles "Oh Darling".

I’m still looking. Closest I’ve heard or seen anyone come close was Johnny Winter. This here is a swing & miss.
Amen!!! We miss you Alex!! From this Memphis New Orleans girl. ❤
Ok. Different take. Im glad both exist. Very glad.
One of the Stone's best records, but I like this version even more.
I love anything by Alex
The genius of this is he stripped away everything from the song but the attitude and the basic riff. There is a swagger to the original, but this takes that swagger and turns it into a full out strut.

Very essential version that was covered by Alex Chilton. Play it everywhere.
10 TONS OF VIBE
I cannot believe I did not know of him till now. He is so great
I found him 3 days ago!
Chilton was famous for the song, The Letter (1967) lead singer in the group The Box Tops. It is a must & the video is on You Tube.
@@Karen-dk1ec yes I watch it when I am feeling the blues
@@markopetersallinen4783 yay
Absolute badassness
Just Heard This For The 1st Time!! Love The Raunch!! Alex Was The Shit!!
do love his work. September Gurls opening chords on a high strung guitar very reminiscent of a sound the stones made use of.
I was lucky enough to see him live on one of his infrequent sojourns, and I can honestly say the guy marched to his own beat which is why some people will never get him...I don't necessarily think he was a genius, but he certainly was a one of a kind, and that's good enough for me
he was not a genius he was God.
The, most talented overall musicial figure, to ever come out of Memphis....bold statement i know...but its TRUE.

love this comment♥
Absolutely awesome.
When the cover is better than the original. I believe he was 19 when he did this.

Excellent, up there with Tha Flamin' Groovies and Johnny Winter versions.
totally swagalicious!
nice one. Never heard that before.
I'll bet if Keef heard this he'd start dancing.
My band is definitely going to cover this version. It's so dirty and raw compared to the few Stones versions I've heard.
killer version
this is soooo good.......................................!
This version and Ananda Shankar’s are my favorite jumpin jack flash covers
My sixth cousin once removed. Love this cover.
oh wow ! you meet him ?
So unbelievably good
He captures the energy of the song, real punk vibes slightly stooges
you can start hearing the Box Top turn into the Big Star.... my favorite Stones cover...
Have you checked out his cover of Singer Not the Song? That's really good too.
I always loved the original single, but frankly this is better than the way the Stones do it live now.
Pioneer of punk !
what?
Everyone was
easily ,one of my favorite Stones covers, Johnny Winter's Silver Train and Let it Bleed too
All I can say is "GOT DAMN IT"!!! Alex hate that it took me this long to enjoy your superb sound. I also enjoy this soulful song with the "The Box Tops - "People Make The World" (1967) Thanks Again.
very good cover
Covers don't get better than this. Watch it or in this case listen.
Damn! Heavy and Nasty. Hellacious shakers to boot!
Dear sweet Jesus, this is absolutely fucking brilliant.
Alex version has balls, coolness and swagger!
This version has more swag than Keith and Mick put together. That's coming from a guy who loves the stones.
I can't agree dude, the original has swagger for days
haha.. i don't think so . Sounds more like the beatles doing JJF
Uh no....
If I shut my eyes I'm getting Richard Hell, iggy pop... Etc... Just wish I was in CBGB's sometime in the early 70's...lol or even that I'd ever been to CBGB's ever ha ha this is so cool it's freezing... ☺️
Great !
Thank you so much this is amazing.
SICK!
Badass.
I hate to make some people, but for me this is better than the original. It’s much grittier and edgier and actually comes from a true pop heart.
Raw and wild 100%
oh, yeah!
Saw stones perform this front and center in the rain Cleveland maybe late 70s
Even better than the real thing...
child.......................
yep..yep..yep..and that's hard to do.
❤️
Someone is going compile a Alex Chilton top ten mix and score big pretty soon.
He did a Sugar Sugar cover too. Which is also very good.
I bet The Black Keys worshipped this guy!
''......WATCH IT!!!!!....''
Watch it!!!!
better than the stones
LMAO!!!!
Yes its better
Son of a BITCH! He now owns this. Somewhere Mick is shitting himself and crying.
The production reminds me of Jesus Lizard-era Steve Albini.
Chilton really knew his business.
It's alright now..
A dash of T. Rex here along with the nasty dirt.
This pre-dates T. Rex’s rock period
@@LeGrandeOrange Yes, but it sure shares some dna.
Hear a lot of Nirvana in this ..
The drums/percussion sound a lot like that Blur song called Song 2.
I agree. Obviously Kurt had his influences from the previous generation of Aberdeen musicians and there were a lot of them in the Puget Sound area in the 70s
just fucking awesome.
but stop dumping on jagger. he fucking wrote it.
Never liked this song until I heard this version.
Did AC play guitar too?
percarious slow timing adds to a friv oh less good out cum 2017
Sounds like he influenced Beck on the scott pilgrim soundtrack
Sounds better than the Stones
Good for sure and I love the 'Free' like drums, but sorry y'all it just doesn't cut it with me, the original is still the best. Each to their own I guess.
jUMPIN poWER pOP jACK FLASH VERSION
Awesome sound and voice. And wow, how he sounds like Kurt Cobain and Iggy.
New York Dolls might've taken pointers from Alex's voice too
eg whats age got to do with it i like big star and some alex solo i was just saying what i thought it wasnt a pop at alex

Very raunchy. Decent cover.
chill-tonne (aka the kurt cobaine version)

is he as badass as the guys who wrote it?
liverneck jones - More so.

johnny winter does it best this sounds like a oasis cover
Jamie Wesson This was done in the 70’s when this guy was a teen.
Oasis blows dead dogs.
it doesn't sounds bad
Shit sounds like the stooges
Sounds more like the beatles .
He sure screwed that up!
Failed attempt.
