The funny thing is that this old top loader was never designed with efficiency in mind unlike the front loader. Which means, a newer top-loader model should technically consume less. And from my experience, top loader (with an agitator) wash dirty clothes way better (as we've seen in this video, clothes are constantly getting cycled over and rub against each others, all that while being in the water (with front loader, your clothes are constantly in and out of the water, which is probably why cycles takes longer). However, manufacturers makes a big deal with newer top loaders about how they use less water, but oftentimes the clothes on the top barely get wet and that also prevent clothes to cycle around properly. I always activate "Deep water wash" on my washer to make up for that.
Pausing long enough to give a tip about the front load machine design. Top load traditional machines some of us are used to using habitually close the lid. Makes sense for that application. When it comes to front load machines leave door ajar. Do NOT close the door except when in use. No stinky.
Put the watt meter on your pump. We also live off grid and water is a energy hog, second to the fridge. Btw, we have the same front load machine as the one you demonstrated (slightly more current model with touch buttons), no smell at all.
my Front loader doesn't ever smell... however I always leave the door open and wipe the rubber seal after each wash. Front loaders don't tangle and cleans so much better. FL can be mounted on a made to suit box/bench and the smell maybe bc the door is closed. FL for me always. Happy washing.

We have had a little washing machine we got at an off grid store a couple years back but is kinda small for using permanently and were thinking of other options :)
We live off grid and ran same type of tests and yes older top loader affiliated much better, shorter wash time. We went with new LG design that uses very littler power from our solar. It’s a large loader and is the best option we have tested. Costs $800.
with each wash day the front loader should be cleaned in the ring area and left open for about an hour to dry. same goes for dryer and any other washer and dryer.
Have a Maytag set from 1973 that’s still going strong and only paid $30 for them last year. The matching gas dryer may have a standing pilot but it continues to work just fine after all these years.
I find appliance simplicity to be an important factor when choosing. In our case, being able to maintain and repair appliances is as important as energy consumption. Simple appliance design may not be as energy efficient but much more reliable. Simple crank buttons versus complicated computer controllers makes the future much more certain. It's a learning experience.
In Europe top load machines disappeared forty years ago. Nobody uses them, and they are not available to purchase. Everyone switched because front load machines are superior in every way. I don't understand why the US is still so in love with top load machines, and why they seem to think front load machines are something newly invented. Front load machines are proven to wash better, cause less damage to clothes, use less water, less energy to heat that water, less detergent and spin faster So clothes dry quicker saving yet more energy if you are drying in a machine. Front load machines should never smell, like all machines they benefit from a monthly very hot cycle, and powder detergent is always better.
I have always used a front loader, and a top loader. Let me tell you I am MUCH happier with the front loader. It uses less electricity, A LOT less water, a lot less detergent, saves me time, and detergent. Front load is the way to go from LG.

If you are running on batteries then the front load is the way to go. Spikes in draw heat up the inverter and higher usage in short burst are damaging. Inverters have a wattage that describe them drawing above that is a melting point for them. Actually the inverter is slowly being damaged but surpassing its wattage greatly reduces its life. Coming close to its wattage it technically ok from the manufacturers statement but actually have a wattage that you don't get that close to will give you superior life for your inverter. That wattage is its meltdown point watch out for spikes.

Its the most difficult thing to estimate correctly max use of electricity. Not how much do you use normally but when things go wrong what is the max you would try. Then there is at least two of you so the next question. What is the max use in a weird event that both of you will agree to. My advice comes from my minor elecyrical background and an old rv sales guy. He took the time to remind me what components are involved in an inverter and the manufacturer statement. The wattage listing is the amount of heat it takes and still has a lifespan. If you place 75 watts on 300 watt inverter it should outlast manufacturers expectations. If you hit its recommended max regularly expect premature failure. The rating means the inverter is resistant to meltdown up to that wattage. RV sales guy had one further piece of advice. All use on these inverters slowly melts the components. Replacing them will happen. Just oversize enough to get a good number of years.

You can actually add water to front load washer also using detergent compartment as inlet. But still it's awkward and water spills everywhere if you make urgent. And nobody sits in front of front load for hours to keep adding water when it needs.
Cheap gallon white vinegar. Use the whole gallon on drum clean and hottest water. Got rid of my problem. I also baby@at machine and stop it b4 drain and restarted it aka double time.
This is awesome, I honestly didn't think that the kwts test would be even! Now think about this! Look up the turn over rate on front loaders, vs top loaders! I would keep that top loader that you have now and sale the front loader. One thing I found out today, front loaders, when you think they are messing up... there done. Your looking at replacing the drum, the shaft , the shaft seal, both bearings, and the drum motor. Look all those parts up, and you could get it rebuilt with those parts yourself, but how long will that last before the noise reduction goes out, or the computer. I say that after watching appliance mechanics videos. Check it out your self. I say top load all the way!
I'm a huge fan of top loaders. The Maytag washer did the best job because it was very straightforward and took less time to wash one single load of clothing. Plus the amplitude was consistent as well. Way to go Maytag.
These family always have their kindness and good.But i don't really know how their really life are? The main advantage of the top loader in this video is it's an old Maytag, it will last forever. Front loaders, like most modern machines aren't very reliable, too many electronics to fail. Stick with the very reliable old Maytag.
You can actually use a front loaded washing machine without a water connection. You just have to pour the water into it through the was detergent hatch, until it is about a quarter full to the glass in the door.

Front loaders need to wash longer to achieve the same level of clean as does a top loader. The motors used in both machines require approximately the same amount of power to generate the mechanical wash action. The main difference in power consumption has to do with heating the water. A top loader filled to the max requires more hot or warm water, whereas the front loader uses less which it either heats itself or draws from the water heater. However, if the power comes from renewable sources it doesn’t really make any difference. Most of the energy efficiency arguments are based on power consumption that is fed using non-renewables.
That Maytag top loader will out perform any front load washer made today, and will provide many years of trouble free service, and don’t listen to all of the energy garbage people say about those old school top loaders and it’s just a sales pitch to convince you to buy a new washer you don’t need.
I have to admit I’ve never totally understood the top load thing, they don’t wash or rinse well, they use so much more water than front loaders, front loaders are also more gentle and generally spin better, If you had heaters in your front loaders over there you wouldn’t get so much smell, and don’t be lazy you sometimes have to clean the door seal on a front loader, and are you allergic to bending down to the washing machine, and ask yourself why hospital laundry’s always use front load machines or textile factories, and I can’t believe you said it’s about how much electricity it uses not how clean your clothes are
I actually find its the opposite, front loader did a poor job at washing my work clothes. I guess the fact that front loaders barely soak clothes in water and the fact that it's more gentle on the clothes seems to make it less effective at cleaning (best way to remove a stain always been to rub affected areas together)

Why does it smell?? I have severe asthma and one of my triggers is mold. that's a deal breaker for me. I just wanted a front loader so that i can wash large blankets and comforters at home instead of hauling them to laundromat. I have a rescue dog who sheds terribly and need to wash bedding often (another trigger for me are dogs. but can't help myself, love dogs) Tuxedo is adorable!!!!

Beware of top load washers if you plan on ever using an inverter with solar power. At the end of the spin cycle they can send electricity back into your inverter and fry it,
It is not a good comparison and would not prove much since the Maytag is not as new a machine vs a front loader which seems much newer. This is like comparing a cathode tube tv to a led tv for power consumption. Or an old Ford T1 car manufactured in 1930's compared to the speeds of some new car today for gas consumption etc. Although your tests may show how technology has enhanced in our lives from our past and improvement of power use. To measure the pro and cons need to be considered on even basis and within some reasonable relative time frames in order to be compared for proper acknowledgement assessment.

Dont leave the friking door closed!!!!!!!. I just dont get how hard it is to understand that if you have a front load washer with a rubber gasket witsh means that is water tight. Its going to hold moisture inside and its going to stink. Never!!!! Had a problem with my washing machine smelling. Leave the door Open!!!
Susan Krenz they will never be as efficient as a front loader. The tumbling action of a front load means very little water is needed for a through clean, you simply cannot replicate that action in a top load machine.

its not fair comparison, first you put water by bucket, so the top loader dont have work by that time, also this saves time as you dont have to wait for the tub to fillup, filling up the tub by hose takes a lot of time specially for top loaders. front loader do the cycle all automatically. i think its better to compare the same generation toploader and front loader with same setup(hose and all)
yeah definitely, though I was only talking about the duration of wash. in reality they have almost the same duration, though front loader might be a little bit longer depending on the cycle. we use toploaders since i was a kid, i bought a toploader when I got on a new house, the only complain that I got from it other than waterconsumption is when it is not working. 🙂 (it broke after less than 4yrs) I also got a front loader and the amount of water that It consumes boggles my mind. but the cycle it has is either a good or a bad thing. good that they are plenty, and also bad when you just need a few , but depending on what you need. If you could also test the same scenario using an inverter front load, will it be the same?
I don't see what kind of work it's supposed to do when filling whether it's connected to water or not. It's just water pressure pushing the water into the thub, the washer doesn't have to do anything other than keeping the valve open. If anything, it probably took more time going back and forth with buckets than just letting the washer fill.

For me the best way to washing clothes is with your own hands, I mean bare hands. Very traditional and exhausting but It feels really satisfying and cleaner than using washing machine for me as Indonesian.

Wash your machine on a hot wash with cleaner once or twice a year and leave the door open when not in use.. it won’t smell.. plus a top loader will use so much more water. Terrible things
electricity isn't the main selling point of front load. the whole point is cleaning with a LOT less water. "off grid" living is maximizing resources and top load is a braindead move when they use a ton more water

30 to 40 gallons per load, really wear on the water reserve...
When you have a front loader you need to leave the door open and wipe the gasket dry after you are done using it. That s why they have that bad smell.

Well we are moving off grid and every watt counts. That is why we were testing the electricity used.

I think you could cut down on the mold if you run it through the recommend clinging cycle often and leave to door open so it can dry out between uses.
Just use some baking soda in your front loader and you never have a mold smell.

Beware of top load washers if you plan on ever using an inverter with solar power. At the end of the spin cycle they can send electricity back into your inverter and fry it,

That can go for any electric motor since electricity in turns into 3 phase electricity in the stator.
Not a worry with a traditional TL. When they're done power is cut to the motor, it doesn't use any fancy DC motors or anything.

It is not a good comparison and would not prove much since the Maytag is not as new a machine vs a front loader which seems much newer. This is like comparing a cathode tube tv to a led tv for power consumption. Or an old Ford T1 car manufactured in 1930's compared to the speeds of some new car today for gas consumption etc. Although your tests may show how technology has enhanced in our lives from our past and improvement of power use. To measure the pro and cons need to be considered on even basis and within some reasonable relative time frames in order to be compared for proper acknowledgement assessment.
Well considering the old washer never been designed with efficiency in mind, since they're even for a cycle, I'd assume a modern top loader to get better results and beat the front loader hands down.

I just dont get how hard it is to understand that if you have a front load washer with a rubber gasket witsh means that is water tight. Its going to hold moisture inside and its going to stink. Never!!!! Had a problem with my washing machine smelling. Leave the door Open!!!
Old handmedown will clean better and not stink. After 2 years I got a top loader. Just saying.
I would rather have the Maytag Top Loading washer.

Susan Krenz they will never be as efficient as a front loader. The tumbling action of a front load means very little water is needed for a through clean, you simply cannot replicate that action in a top load machine.
newer top loaders use 23-28 gals of water while front loader use 7-15 gals of water. the conventional one uses 40 gals of water
@@spencerwilton5831 front loader is like taking a shower where the dirty water goes back at the shower head to be spitted on you again instead of going down the drain. Top loader is like jumping while being dirty into a swimming pool. You tell me in which of the two scenarios you'll come out cleaner. Less water = higher dirt concentration.
its not fair comparison,
first you put water by bucket, so the top loader dont have work by that time, also this saves time as you dont have to wait for the tub to fillup, filling up the tub by hose takes a lot of time specially for top loaders.
front loader do the cycle all automatically.
i think its better to compare the same generation toploader and front loader with same setup(hose and all)

yeah definitely, though I was only talking about the duration of wash. in reality they have almost the same duration, though front loader might be a little bit longer depending on the cycle.
we use toploaders since i was a kid, i bought a toploader when I got on a new house, the only complain that I got from it other than waterconsumption is when it is not working. 🙂 (it broke after less than 4yrs)
I also got a front loader and the amount of water that It consumes boggles my mind. but the cycle it has is either a good or a bad thing.

I don't see what kind of work it's supposed to do when filling whether it's connected to water or not. It's just water pressure pushing the water into the thub, the washer doesn't have to do anything other than keeping the valve open. If anything, it probably took more time going back and forth with buckets than just letting the washer fill.
No wonder that your frontloader is smelling, my miele front loader takes at least 2,5 hours. Our laundry is perfectly clean and no bad smells.

Can you use a kilowatt meter on your washer and post results after 2.5 hours wash cycle to see if you actually save any electricity.

For me the best way to washing clothes is with your own hands, I mean bare hands. Very traditional and exhausting but It feels really satisfying and cleaner than using washing machine for me as Indonesian.

Wash your machine on a hot wash with cleaner once or twice a year and leave the door open when not in use.. it won’t smell.. plus a top loader will use so much more water. Terrible things

electricity isn't the main selling point of front load. the whole point is cleaning with a LOT less water. "off grid" living is maximizing resources and top load is a braindead move when they use a ton more water
