You have made an old man cry, this explanation is something I have needed all my life, you have unlocked a door, which as a classical pianist has always prevented me from playing like this, bless you!
I like you and love your playing. When I was young, I was made to take piano. When I missed a note (my fault I know) my teacher would smack my fingers very hard with her Sheaffer white dot pencil. I got to dislike my lessons very much. You lit a fire in me, I am now 81. I want to re-learn again and am now not afraid of the pencil.
You are a Master Teacher! I am 70 and just starting to learn to play piano. I adore your musical interpretations and learn from watching you. Keep up the good work, and thank you for sharing! ❤
I don't play, I'm a terrible student. I always end up crushing on the teacher. Sangah, no surprise you are a wonderful influence on the world of music. 👍❤
I LOVE this sososososoo~~MUCH!! you've just solved my problems for centuries that no one can ever tell me so clear like that!!! thank you thank you!! love you!!
I am basically a classical pianist. I got bored reading full scores, until I discovered lead sheet music. I am 66 years old and started piano when I was 7 ! Long time ago !!!!! I compose my own music and I write my own…..lead sheets ! Your video is excellent ! Congratulations 😊
Nice! I grew up playing lead sheet style for my church choir without knowing it was “a thing”. Glad you put this video together. Now I can explain to my kids and share this video with them. You are correct!! I too have observed that many who have learnt the classical route strictly, cannot play a number impromptu or give life to a number with just the lead sheet.
That's the way I learned too I thought it was terrible because I don't have the base... but I was able to swing it and ill embellish it because I learned to play by ear with using basic chords and reading basic leads notes .Arpeggios is my go to .... ☺ you can never wrong w arpeggios
I started doing that in my early 20's (after having played classical piano for years), little by little I stared to figure out how to improvise (that was pre-internet). Eventually I got to be decent but then you reach a plateau and it gets hard to find new ideas. I feel that once you've past a certain level of proficiency in your improvising, the one thing that can stop you from improving further is rhythm, how confortable you are at using more complex and intricate rhythm in your left hand while not affecting the right hand. And even more essential is general timing: how you maintain the beat while adding complexity to your accompaniment, whether you play slow, or fast runs. It feels like a life time of learning. I think Sangah that your playing is outstanding, but your sense of timing is just exceptional, something that I pretty much cannot find in other piano players (even very good ones).
A GREAT video! I have been playing theatre pipe organ for 50 years and use this method almost all the time. It does free you up to have fun playing. I have never heard the music described as Lead sheets. We always called it Fake sheets. Found in the many Fake Books that are available. I first learned piano. When I started playing organs with multiple stacked keyboards, a 32 note pedal, expression pedals and many stopkeys, I found out Lead, Fake sheets were the best for my limited skills.
Very good... His humor, his knowledge and that "colloquial" tone brought back some memories of my old Argentine teacher (based in Brazil), who loved Brazilian music... The "missing" MURARO! With his friendliness, everything is "easier" ... well to the taste of Brazilians. Thank you!
You are a musical humanitarian. Thank you for sharing your hard work with us, I will always support your channel . No one sings "Smile" like you. It makes me happy every time.
This post is a year after you did this. I just discovered you and so I have been catching up on what I have been missing. This is fun exercise that encourages me to be experimental in painting musically a bit more freely. Your expressive voice reassuring me to let my sense of the music to be and come to the forefront rather than being too tightly wound around the written page. I will listen to it again. The key was you said paraphrase music is so much more than what's on the page. I interpreted as with the simplified notation it binds you less to it and sets you free to create in the blanks. Oh, I did it this exercise with you. It was fun just to let go and give the process a whirl. Its only me sitting here so what's to worry. Its easy to listen to your voice and of course musically my ears love it. My ears are smiling right now. Thanks!
This is how I taught myself to play piano when I was a teenager , in the 70’s - and then I was seduced by the 6 strings of blues….. I had absolutely no idea what a lead sheet was - but I had the ‘Buskers Songbook’s and some best of 60’s and 70’s books. The shame is that I try to play so many instruments that my keyboard skills have atrophied nowdays - but with a sampled Steinway I can always dream……
Sangah, the way you walk bass is incredible. It's something I've unsucessfully been trying to mimic (not the 1-5-1 in this video, but this slightly more advanced thing you tend to do). If eventually you ever get around to making a breakdown similar to this one of common left hand patterns you use, that would be a great day indeed
First time viewer. Merci. I've been playing piano for 5 weeks and am learning my chords now. This was great for motivation. I had to laugh since when you showed the very first basic notes, and I was lost. But I know the work I have to put in.
Thank you Sangah, I agree with you that lead sheets allow me to improvise and create my own interpretation. This tutorial and the rest of your video inspires me.
Sangah, As a pianist who uses lead sheets and pretty much taught myself how to use them I think your description was amazing simply for novices and beginners. I know many will get much knowledge from your lesson here today. The one thing I love about lead sheet reading is being able to translate the melody into any genre of music you want. You can take a jazz song and make it sound like hip hop and you can take a country song and make it sound like jazz. Always fun! Please tell me where can I see you perform in person? I always see your live screenings, but would love to see you in person at a lounge.
This is great, long time overdue. You are a great teacher/coach/ musician/ artist and more. You keep the student interested in the topic which is a great skill in imparting knowledge. Thanks Sangah.
Every time you give a slight teachings in your livestreams, I find them very insightful and inspiring! Many of us in SF really love this a lot. Always great to learn and take away knowledge from a master. Thank you! 👏👏👏🎹🎼❤️👍🏼👍🏼
This is an awesome lesson. Thank you so much. I’ve been using lead sheets and lyric+chord sheets for a very long time with guitar. I’m just recently trying to apply these to learning piano. You presented it very well - more, please!
Learning from lead sheets is definitely one thing I will need to work upon. Have an excellent day with Pianote studio team today. Thank you so much. 👏👏❤️👍🏼🎶
Yes, I have been struggling with learning lead sheets not knowing what to do with my left hand. You have broadened my horizons. I love your relaxed, personable delivery. It makes me feel comfortable learning from someone who encourages in such a friendly manner.
This overview of techniques really helped me. I was aware of them all, but hearing them all discussed in context to each other, along with the encouragement to enjoy developing one's own sound, this really helped me! Thanks for all your work!
Super helpful. Thank-you. I had no idea what a lead sheet is, but now I do. As a beginner piano player, I now have another resource to aid my learning.
omg, finally .... i've been trying for so long to figure out how to start doing this, and you're the only person who i've seen break it down into something managable... thank you so much for this. it probably seems obvious, but this helped so much
This video is absolutely brilliant! I keep coming back to it again and again. It’s brilliant because of your personality and enthusiasm along with technique pointers such as counting along with the lead sheet and how you reveal all of the possibilities at different levels. Thank you, if you get the chance to do more that would be great. Also, a question, apart from the you tube stuff do you have any other teaching resources?

Thank you Sangah Noona for this! It means a lot coming from someone like you. Honestly all these while I can only cope playing with chord sheets (melody by ear or largely trial and error - nature of self-taught?).
