The thumbnail made me so happy. I once watched LOTR for someone, and he watched The Wizard of Oz for me.
I watched the "Lord of the Rings" Trilogy for the first time during the pandemic, and I was blown away by how much I enjoyed them, as well as the stellar acting, writing, direction and score.
I watched all the Lord of the Rings Trilogy during their 20th anniversary and yeah they were great. Return of the King is my favorite in the trilogy.
They bored me to tears. I don’t know how anyone can sit through that preachy, long winded foolishness.
It's better when you watch it high on weed. Trust me. It's the way that masterpiece was meant to be watched. Gandalf and Bilbo set the movie off smoking "the finest weed in the Shire" just to set the tone. Mirri and Pippen smoke up all of the white wizard's weed and eat all his shrooms not a minute after the tower falls and Saromom is dead.
@@herbertdonnellgrayiii4305 see other than smoking weed, all of those names sound stupid and gibberish like.
I tried to watch the first one and after 25-30 mins I was out because of dumb names and not being able to get past the fact they could have just dug a deep hole in the woods and buried the ring….
@@Trigger200284 are you serious?
"12 Angry Men" was the film that made me fall in love with both cinema and storytelling. Although it's basically 95 minutes of 12 men arguing over events which don't directly concern them, it's still very compelling and character driven, and we learn a lot about the characters as the story progresses.
First time I ever saw that movie was when I was 12. It was shown in my 7th grade social studies class
I agree! I really thought this would make the list.
Excellent addition. Maybe Ms Mojo should do a separate list of must-see B&W films and include that one.
Watched it for the 1st time with my dad, who loves it! Made me fall in love with the movie too
Watched it this year and it was soooo good !
the shawshank redemption
The Princess Bride
Two really good movies that should have been on this list
Two of my favorites!
THE PRINCESS BRIDE YES
...and 5th Element
Inconceivable! these were not on the list to be honest.
Shawshank Redemption ... how could they miss this one? One of Spielburg's greatest and one of the greatest in general.
Maybe not a Top 20, but The Sound of Music always shines.
Absolute travesty that that wasn't included. Or Ben Hur.
Some more classics: Casablanca, All About Eve, West Side Story, Ben Hur, The Sound of Music, Willy Wonka, Rosemary’s Baby, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, ET, 8 1/2, 400 Blows, The Bicyle Thieves, Rashomon. Modern Classics: Back to The Future, Ghostbusters, Home Alone, Cinema Paradiso, Chungking Express, Blade Runner, Ghost, Pretty Woman, Forrest Gump, Titanic
@@joselgarlitos6368 Yes, 400 blows and The Bicycle Thieves! Thank you for sharing your great list!!
I'd recommend Lawrence of Arabia, Alien, The Pianist, Goodfellas, The Professional, Enter the Dragon, Bonnie and Clyde, Taxi Driver, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Cast Away, The Exorcist, Defiance, District 9, Apocalypse Now, Scarface, Gangs of New York, Tombstone, Platoon, Patton, Breaker Morant, Reservoir Dogs, Glory, Willow, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, Stand by Me, Radio
Really glad someone brought up Lawrence of Arabia, thank you!
One flew over the cuckoos nest is sensational
I‘d suggest Pulp Fiction, Alien, The Third Man, Casablanca, The Shawshank Redemption, Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator, Jurassic Park, The Truman Show, maybe Heat and The Usual Suspects
90s films are greatly overlooked on this list despite some of those years being the best years for movies ever.
The Marx Brothers Duck Soup...the classic scenes featuring Harpo Marx whose comedy is perfection without uttering a single word. His comedic ability was matched by his musical talent as the man could play anything, most notably - the harp.
I’ve seen most of these movies. I finally watched the Godfather this week. I’d add the Sound of Music to this list.
Godfather II is the only sequel to win an Oscar. (Nobody outside the USA cares about the Oscars.)
A bronx tale, The Truman show, Forrest Gump, anchorman, Shrek, Django unchained, the wolf of Wallstreet and the matrix movie are all worth watching at one point in life.
Anchorman was aweful and it didn't age well.
@user-si9rl5jo5z the first anchorman was classic
@@user-si9rl5jo5zI'd disagree. It made a mockery of male toxicity rather than painted it in a good light
Forrest Gump for sure!
The first Matrix but the other two are really a waste of money and time!
I'm 38 and I've been watching the Wizard of OZ since I was 3!
I can recit the movie from start to finish I've seen it so many times!
If you enjoy Science Fiction at all, may I recommend a little film called Star Wars (A New Hope)? It is, after all just ‘The Wizard Of Oz’ in space, which is certainly why I love it so much!
Almost the same for me with Star Wars, Spaceballs, Ghostbusters, Sandlot, and Lion King
Yes, and I remember when it was on TV every year around Thanksgiving. So sad that it is no longer shown.
I saw spirited away more than once and can't wait to show this to my friends
Spirited Away is truly a classic. It deserves the Oscar it won. I hope to one day see the stage musical.
From the ones I’ve seen The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Breakfast Club, Schindler’s List, The Princess Bride, The Wizard of the Oz, Singin In The Rain, The Lion King, The Usual Suspects
I just saw the usual suspects a few weeks ago. That is a movie watching at least once for sure… everyone’s acting was on point and I certainly wasn’t expecting Kevin spacey’s character to be the “villain” of sorts
@@signergirl1 I know. It is a brilliant film. My mom showed it to my sister and I for the first time about a year ago
I knew the twist of "Usual Suspects" going in, thanks to an episode of "Yes Dear, which parodied it, but I was still pleasantly surprised.
I would change the last two with Young Frankenstein, West Side Story (the original)
I would replace Parasite with Back to the Future. Parasite is great but it's not a movie everyone must see lol.
On the contrary
I would agree. Not a big fan of Parasite.
I feel like the princess bride is a must see. I can’t imagine my childhood without it
The Lion King definitely should be on the list
I would even say that Pinocchio belongs on there as well
Definitely!!
💯 What a movie
Yes !!!!
Best movie of all time
To leave off mentioning Donald O'Connor in the Dancing in the Rain bit was a bit rude.
Agree!!!!
Cyd Charisse (who was mentioned) was a magic dancer, but she was in one number, while Donald O'Connor held up more than a third of the film (if one can count like that). And, anyone who haven,t seen "Make'em laugh" haven't seen it "all"!
I'm in full agreement with you on that!! His "Make 'Em Laugh" is my favorite part of the film!
Metropolis was missing...
Good one. My favorite silent film
Modern Times is also a valid choice for the silent film era.
So Glad "Gone with The Wind" was included. ❤
Oh my gosh! I said “Oh I bet Citizen Kane is going to be on this list.” Then boom! It was the next movie mentioned
My son had a toy robot as a kid. One of the many things it did was say “Rosebud.” It’s hilarious that Citizen Kane permeated down to that. It’s so random
Goodfellas, The Shining, Terminator 2, The Matrix
Casablanca should always be included in the top 3 of any “must watch” films.
Agreed
I'm not even a big romance movie guy but it's incredible. One of my favorite movies
I’ve never seen it but I’d like to watch it sometime
I have seen 17 of the 20 listed. I would add Lawerence of Arabia and Bridge on the River Kwai. The Shawshank Redemption was pretty awesome too
Anyone who hasn’t watched Cars needs to fix that! It’s a good movie!
It’s really an impossible task, Schindler’s List, Rocky, Snow White, Godzilla, Planet of the Apes, Shawshank, Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer, To Kill a Mockingbird, Das Boot, Airplane
Yes, Rudolph!
Where's E.T??!.
20 years ago I bought a book called "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die" (2004 edition). Every movie in this video released before that year was in the book.
I had that book. Enjoyed it very much, especially the photos of the movie posters.
U forgot Jaws , ET & Titanic
E.T., Aliens, Amadeus, The Goonies
Yes!.
I hated Amadeus!
Goonies! I am 39 and it is still one of my favourite movies ever!!!
ET traumatized me as a kid. Do not reccomend
@@alexateachey9680 How can E.T traumitze anyone?. Best movie when I was growing up.
What I'd put for honorable mention:
Harry Potter
High School Musical
It's a Wonderful Life
Back to the Future
Tomm Moore Cartoon Saloon movies (The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, & Wolfwalkers)
High School musical? You've got to be a yank!
Ok, the phrase "should see" can mean various things. Are we talking in terms of quality alone? To develop a diverse understanding of the possibility of movies? Films of historical importance? And does that mean from a technical standpoint, or in pop culture significance?
For example, I was once given the question if you had to explain the concept of movies to someone who had never seen a movie, which five films would you pick. My selections were Duck Soup (1933), Casablanca (1942), Ben-Hur (1959), Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), and Beauty and the Beast (1991). Not my top five films of all time, but a selection that in combination represented the greatest range of what mainstream Hollywood cinema has to offer.
That all being said, it's a shame there's no traditional animated film on this list. How can you flat out reject one of the most important mediums in the history of cinema?
It's a Wonderful life, Amadeus, Terminator 2, Shawshank Redemption, The Elephant Man
Amazing list watchmojo and Rebecca. I have a couple of my own, The Shawshank Redemption, Forest Gump, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, The Silence of the lambs, Batman 1989, Superman 1978, Inception and GoodFellas.
Shawshank Redemption was awesome!
Forrest Gump is probably the Spielberg film I’d put in. It really defined the 90s filmmaking in so many ways. Spielberg, Hanks, digitally inserting characters into historic scenes seamlessly. Amazing soundtrack! It does a lot of heavy lifting.
@@ehhhsteve8582 Yes. Technically an amazing film and one that I am sure created new methods and standards in filmmaking. Thank you!
I love the classics. Singin In The Rain is definitely in my top 10 favorite movies of all time, but nothing can top my all-time favorite, The Wizard Of Oz. It is one of those childhood nostalgia movies that has us feeling warm inside every time we see it. Plus, the acting, sets, and colorful… well, everything, never fail to make me smile 💚
I am insulted that not one of Miyazaki's masterpieces of cinema was mentioned in your list. That man deserves at least an honorable mention for Spirited Away.
That would’ve been awesome if Spirited Away was on the list. P.S. love that movie.
Schindler's List should have been on here. Believe me, you only need to watch it once.
Casablanca (1942), An American in Paris (1951), Ben-Hur (1959), Some Like it Hot (1959), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973), The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974), Rocky (1976), Animal House (1978), Gandhi (1982)
Thank you for providing the dates!! Very much appreciated!
E.T., Back to the Future, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Pinocchio are four would include over a several that are listed
Is the Pinocchio you’re referring to the animated Disney movie or the live action one from the 90s?
@@David_Theisen Animated Disney
@@depalma13 The live action one with Jonathan Taylor Thomas is a good piece of filmmaking!! And felt like it could have stood on its own!
The Court Jester with Danny Kaye is SPECTACULAR and should be seen at least once.
YES!
I would recommend Stand by Me, The Crow, Tombstone,The Goonies, ET, The Princess Bride, The Outsiders, Sergeant York. Or a few I can think of. So maybe the list should be 50 cause I know I'm forgetting some.
Surprised to see a lack of "Schindler's List" endorsements in the comments... Truly one of the only films I am convinced everyone has to have seen at least once in their life time.
The Shawshank Redemption should be on this list
I'll never understand this opinion. Why do people love this turd-on-toast movie? An utterly unrealistic movie, bearing no semblance to actual prison life in any way shape or form, that was nonsensical, and made people worse for having watched it. The "redemption" was learning how to be cynical?
Master and Commander, Saving Private Ryan, Lawrence of Arabia, The French Connection, Goodfellas, The Princess Bride, Full Metal Jacket, Jaws, Mr. Roberts, Alien
Yes, Master and Commander. You are the only one who mentioned this great movie!
No Casablanca... thas a shock to me.
Even though good movies come every once in a while now, the overall quality of them has really dropped
Or we love idealising the past
Fiddler on the Roof, Amadeus, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, It's a Wonderful Life, Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, The Graduate, Some Like It Hot, Schindler's List, Alien, The Matrix
There are clearly some great movies on this list, however I can easily think of three that changed movies for the better that I think are more deserving than some that are on this list. Let's start with "Planet of the Apes" - This movie not only was groundbreaking for costume design but was a political statement on society that holds up today. Not only that but the "musical score" is extraworldly and helps place this movie into my top twenty must see movies. Next, "The Princess Bride". Has a fairy tale movie ever been told better. Heart-warming, charming, funny. So many twists and turns, and just shear beauty from start to finish. How can anyone make a must watch list without the Princess Bride. Finally, "Airplane". Let's ignore the fact that this "well rounded" list seemed to lack in the area of comedy. Modern Times, and Toy Story are both maybes, but a true comedy needs to be on this list. "Airplane" introduced us to a totally new style of comedy. Sure today with think those jokes as old, but they started somewhere...and this is where they started. Seeing humour in wordplay similar to how Abbott & Costello did before them. "A hospital, what is it" - "A large building with sick people, but that's not important now" or, "Surely you can't be serious" - "I am serious and don't call me Shirley" are brilliant examples of how the English language has so much play. If I'm looking for a comedy to be in my top 20. "Airplane" is on my list.
Casablanca should be in this list
GWTW should only be seen on a large theatre screen.
I do think "The Dark Knight" is a nice movie to see. I also definitely agree about "Toy Story," "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" (also "The Two Towers" and "The Return of the King), and "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope." I've seen "The Breakfast Club" and "Singin' in the Rain" (I even mimicked a dance move Cosmo did in the song "Make 'Em Laugh" when I was little that my mom thought was cute). "The Wizard of Oz" is a movie I would say you're COMPLETELY wrong about seeing at least once MsMojo. That movie is very untrue to the book that L. Frank Baum wrote, and it still bugs me a lot that Baum is NOT getting the praise he deserves for his work. It really angers me that people are acknowledging the movie more than the book. The movie doesn't deserve ANY praise at all, it should have been a Box Office bomb for its lack of loyalty to the book. I say that movie should NOT be seen at all. That movie deserves to be forgotten, probably completely. I think it was best Baum never saw the movie (he died 20 years before the movie was released), and somebody who's friends with my mom guessed that Baum would NOT have liked that movie, he might have thought it was bad too.
Somebody besides me doesn't like The Wizard of Oz! I hate that movie and I did like the book. ET should have been #1 & it didn't even make the list 🤷♀
I remember this famous movie and it's one of my favorite movies. It's a classic movie and I read the book.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Dark Knight are my favourites.
Thank you for the list of movies. I'll try to watch some of them.
I admire the bravery it takes to put one's thoughts "out there" in regards to "The Top XX" anything. You know ahead of time you're gonna get flamed many times over for not including so many people's own version of their own top picks. I'm a massive fan of motion pictures and visual media in general, and at 70 years old have seen every single film on this list. You left out some of my own personal favs and included some I considered "meh", but including the LOTR trilogy caused me to give your picks a "thumbs up". I agree with you on probably 15 out of your 20, not too bad, IMO.
Titanic, LoTR, Sound of Music, Shrek, Lion King, Birds, the Truman Show, the Impossible, jurassic parc
Great List!! I’m surprised that you didn’t mention that Seven Samurai inspired The Magnificent Seven!! My additions are The Sound of Music, The Longest Day, The Usual Suspects, Rio Bravo and Bullitt!!!
Sound of Music, Shawshank, Back to the Future, Paint Your Wagon and Mad Mad Mad Mad World.
The Princess Bride and The Color Purple.
I know is extremely hard to do this kind of list, but the selection is fantastic!
The Green Mile, Hide and Seek, Limitless, and Frailty. All of these movies blew me away the first time I watched them.
Has anyone else seen Frailty? Everyone I know has told me they never saw it!
Frailty is a great movie.
Powers booth and Matthew.
For Singing in the Rain, you got to mention DONALD O'CONNOR!
What would that movie be without, for example, "Make'em laugh" with his acrobatic dance, or the Fiddle duet?
Ben Hur, The 10 Commandments, Princess Bride, Deerhunter (and remove apocolypse now), Mary Poppins, To Kill a Mockingbird, OK, so many and so glad Akiru Kurosawa made the list, although I prefer Roshomon.
Why remove Apocalypse Now?
Watched this only to make sure "The 7 Samurais" was included. That is easily no 1 to me.
Cant believe not one person has mentioned: 2001-- A Space Odyssey
It was on the list
Alien 1979 has GOT to be on a list like this.
It's shocking to me how many of these movies I have never seen. And I consider myself a cinephile.
I would just state the Star Wars trilogy and the Lord of the Rings trilogy as one entry each. They are best watched as their own complete stories respectively. I'd add Alien, Second Hand Lions, Hook, Schindler's List, and 12 Angry Men. I have not seen Spirited Away, but have heard it is amazing. One of the Studio Ghibli movies should have made this list as well. My choice would be Princess Mononoke.
Edit: I forgot to add in The Bird Cage. That movie is hilarious and never fails to put a smile on my face!
No Shawshank? No Good Will Hunting? Terminator 2? Rocky 3? Karate kid? Happy Gilmore? Pulp Fiction? Forest Gump? Back to the Future? Come on
I think this list is nearly impossible to make. So many great movies. Twenty spaces is not nearly enough!
The Shawshank Redemption?
Harlem Nights, Guess who's coming to dinner, Do the right thing, Fences, New Jack City, Glory, Malcolm X, American Gangster, Tales from the Hood, and Crash
you know what should also be on that list? The original godzilla
Terminator 2 - For a movie made in 1991 it has some of the best CGI ever! Plus great story and acting
To Kill A Mockingbird - A movie with a great lesson to be learnt, made at a time when segregation was a huge issue
Scarface and Goodfellas- 2 of the best gangster movies ...... period!!!
One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest - Educational, inspiring, sad, funny and tragic all in one
Lion King and Toy Story - 2 of the best animated movies ever made, loved by both adults and kids alike
The Usual Suspects - Possibly the greatest twist in movie history
The Goonies - One of the best adventure movies, loved by adults and kids
Shrek and the 2000s Spider-Man trilogy
I would add Buster Keaton's "The General" to this list
Surprised to not see Spirited Away in the video.
Blood In Blood Out (1993) A Film That's Not just loved by Chicano's but all races even star Damian Chapa Is approached by people of different Ethnicities about the 1993 Hollywood Pictures film and Disney has It streaming on Hulu as of now certified Disney classic
John Wick for epic fight scenes, and Smokey and the Bandit for epic car chases.
Common, To kill a mockingbird needs to be on there.
Good dancing and singing in the rain. Donald o Connor to me had the best dance routine in the whole movie
I like wizard of Oz
In Singing in the Rain you mentioned it was Gene Kelly dancing with Debbie Reynolds and Cyd Charisse.
It was not Cyd Charisse. It was Donald O'Connor.
Really good list, I do think you could make a top 50 though
To choose twenty movies (even ten) is nearly an impossible task. There are so many great films out there. As soon as I think I've thought of a final list of twenty, ten more films pop into my head!
Forest Gump, Mississippi Burning, A time to kill
The Original Star Wars trilogy should be here as well.
It was.
Titanic should be on this list
The Lion King should be on this list
The Departed should be on this list
Aliens should be on this list
Terminator should be on this list
Star Trek 2: the Wrath of Khan should be on tis list
Singing in the Rain is also funny as all get out.
Star Wars A New Hope, The Wizard Of Oz, The Dark Knight, Toy Story, Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, The Breakfast Club are some of my favourite classics and always will be ❤️❤️ also another movie that should be a honourable Mention Is Jurassic Park One of the best Dinosaur movies ever 🦖🦖
I don't understand how you got this list. Feels wrong. Anyway, I've seen 8/20
Titanic should have been on here!!
I’d add: Sunrise 1927, Laura 1944, and The Night of the Hunter 1955
Laura with Vincent price classic.
Two suggestions from the same genre: The Longest Day, the first WWII movie to examine warfare from the top down, warts and all; and Saving Private Ryan which followed in its footsteps to emphasize the personal side of the human cost of war... both massive in scope and cinematography, yet character-driven in plotline... KDM
How many have you seen? I've only seen 10.
@msmojo I do not know if this has been asked, but is there a reason that out of the 20 movies listed, non had a predominantly black cast? Are not Carmen Jones, Hidden Figures Malcom X or The Color Purple movies that should be scene at least once? I agree with a lot on the current list, but just wondering why these acclaimed movies were left off and were any considered? 🤔
The Seventh Seal has been voted the best movie if all time. It should be somewhere on this list.
The shining, raiders of the Lost ark, Jaws, field of dreams,
Amazing that quality of the pictures are so clear
I’ve only seen 4 of these movies. I mean probably 5 but I don’t remember that much of The Wizard of Oz
Scarface, Mary Poppins, Blazing Saddles, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Alien, A Hard Day’s Night, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, ET, Ghostbusters, Caddyshack, Vacation, Back To the Future, Top Gun, Mission Impossible, Diehard, Forrest Gump, Sandlot, Goodfellas, Free Willy, Bad News Bears, Rocky, Terminator 2, the Fast and the Furious, Jurassic Park, Con Air, Spaceballs, Mad Max, Hook, Conjuring, Insidious, ALL the Marvel movies!!
