Super Mario World is one of my favourite games of all time. It introduced a totally new way of jumping that I honestly rarely used years ago. Now we see if we can beat the game, without ever using the B Button AKA doing a normal jump

37:00 why not spin and catch a shell to jump over more koopas to the top?
wait can't you spin in place to flip or deactivate the mecha koopas? can you crouch and jump spin while crouching?
Can't wait to see how he's gonna use the badge boost glitch in this one
👑
I don't remember Kanto looking like that, but it's cool
Bowser: That’s a nice Challenge Run! It’d be a shame if I-
I forgot how beautiful this game is. Defined style has a timeless quality
Back when Nintendo cared.
46:09 clearing every second level in the special world (tubular, awesome, mondo, funky) allows you to save
Jrose doing SMW… holy ..
I knew you’d be stuck at Bowser, but I’m surprised you were able to clear the entire special world.
Wait, you're not Ceave! You're not Pannenkoek, either!
Oh hi Coda how's it going
@ChronoSquare IT'S YOU !!
HOW ARE YOU GENTLEMEN?
Doesn't Pannen expressly play Mario 64?
Its cool you're able to get sponsors on this channel too, always appreciate your content wherever you release it.
Even cooler is the existence of SponsorBlock, to completely skip the obnoxious selling-out. 👍
@dawnbreaker2912 You mean... Making a living?
@douglaswills4624 I genuinely cannot fathom STILL having the opinion that content creators should not be allowed to take sponsors to supplement their income. Some people are so stuck in the 2015 mentality man
@dawnbreaker2912 Ah yes, a RUclips creator living and breathing off of adsense, a perfectly consistent and sustainable way of earning money... if you don't mind RUclips just deciding your video can no longer make money because we can't tell you, or decides someone else should earn your money instead because why are you asking, you don't need to know that.
3:06 to start the actual journey.
SMW was my first video game ever. My mom would play it when I was a toddler. It shaped me into who I am today.
A big nerd.
Perhaps a plumber?
Your mom sounds great, and probably my age too. Damn I made that weird, I'm really just saying we had great culture tbh.
I'm reminded how busted getting access to Top Secret Area so early if you know what you're doing is but I love Mario World for it.
Back when game devs actually rewarded you for being good instead of rewarding you for being awfully bad. Not that I mind, but times seriously changed.
you can fly without using the jump button. all you need to do is spinfly with the A button and then land and walk off a ledge within 80 frames of the initial A press, and then Mario will begin flying as he runs off the ledge
also the reason the cape "double jump" worked inconsistently was because it's only possible to do that within 80 frames of the initial A press. however, if you land and jump again within the same 80 frames, the timer doesn't reset. it just keeps ticking down instead. so the timer was still running out before you tried to double jump
Would this make 36:00 possible then? You can spin fly to get the first long ledge, then use that ledge and this trick to regular fly up the left wall?
Fancy seeing you here. Didn't know you were a Jrose fan too.
What the hell, this youtuber is using Jrose11's voice! Someone should tell him!
He even made himself LOOK like Jrose11!! This AI stuff is getting weird!
Jrose 12 is Jrose 11's second channel
36:27 this level is actually possible to beat with only spin flight. It requires insane amounts of cape mastery but if you spin onto a grate then go off the grate while you still have P-speed you actually enter normal cape flying state. If you spam any of the jump buttons while pulling back you can get slow enough to actually move only 1 pixel every few frames while ascending with perfect pullbacks. there is also a 50/50 chance that you can turn around with the cape when pressing X to do a spin while holding Y to move even higher/into the opposite direction. I'll probably TAS it.
ruclips.net/video/2_jdeQnOmgo/video.html
51:50 this level is also possible by doing some crazy yoshi-cape flight shenanigans. Maybe I'll TAS that too.
Nevermind doing this as a challenge. When I first played this game, I was coming off of the original SMB trilogy, where A was the only jump. And so playing this game, it took me a bit to realize that the normal jump was now on the B button, so I was spin-jumping everywhere. At least for the first few levels.
So, Princess Peach became Bowser's prisoner for life just because Mario didn't feel like jumping.
The manual calls it The Big "Boo."
27:10 they’re officially called Big Bubbles. What they’re made of is anyone’s guess, but I would think ectoplasm
Fun facts: they share the same sprite as Big Boo but on a different palette, and both enemies can be killed by sliding down slopes (though Big Bubbles are never found in an appropriate room for that)
edit: you CAN actually kill a Big Bubble in the vanilla game in Valley of Bowser Ghost House using the stairs
thank you for the sage boo wisdom!
I got this game when I was 5 and always used spin jump for absolutely no reason
49:38 Lol about to see the 1/2 B-press
(13:34) That's because you let go of the X/Y button you were using to hold the P-switch, and then repressed that button while you were still ascending during takeoff. The game considered that to be a normal jump since you were carrying the P-switch when you first jumped, even if you used the A button to do so. Thus, since you were no longer carrying anything when you reached the top of your takeoff ascent, but you were holding X or Y, you went into normal cape flight mode. And, the message box did not actually have anything to do with this happening directly.
(17:55) I've never heard those spikes referred to as Dorito chips before. Nice. :P
(31:10) So, this might be tricky to explain, but I know what's happening there. When you do a takeoff jump with the cape, an invisible takeoff timer starts (I think it lasts about 80 frames, which is almost 1½ seconds), and when that timer expires, that's the game's way of knowing to stop you from ascending any further during the takeoff. Before the timer expires, you can let go of A to start descending and press A again to resume ascending, so that's how you can sorta "double jump" as you described.
However, if you land early and then jump again with max speed, if the first instance of that takeoff timer hasn't expired yet, it doesn't reset for the second takeoff. As a result, you'll have far less takeoff time for that second jump, and you probably won't be able to do the "double jump" thing since the takeoff timer will have expired prematurely on you during that jump.
(34:19) Oh, dear... Ludwig's Castle... I know what's up ahead, and while it's doable, and I have done it before... I'll just say, "good luck".
(34:43) It's not impossible. See my video titled, "Super Mario World - Ludwig's Castle Cleared Without Pressing the B Button" from over 15 years ago. (Oh, geez... RUclips really butchered the 240p quality of that one at some point... I might want to try redoing it at a higher quality.)
(41:37) If you didn't stop moving there, and just spin jumped off the ON/OFF block right away while maintaining your speed, you would've taken flight again.
(46:00) Actually, your last save was after beating Mondo, the most recent level you finished. Every second Special World level gives you a save prompt when you clear it. So, Tubular, Awesome, Mondo, and Funky will let you save after you beat them.
(48:44) Welp, RIP this run here. I think this is the only thing you cannot accomplish in SMW without the B button. Sure, you can do all 96 exits I believe (although some, like Ludwig's Castle, get insanely difficult), but you simply cannot beat Bowser without pressing B. Oof.
(51:26) You're referring to Valley of Bowser 4's secret exit, right? Well, guess what? I've done that one in the past without pressing B too. The video is titled, "Super Mario World - Valley of Bowser 4 Secret Exit Without Pressing the B Button", and is from the same date as my aforementioned Ludwig's Castle video. (And, RUclips butchered the 240p quality here too...)
The Bowser fight is possible, albeit hard. It was discovered by TASers some time ago that you can spinjump in such a way that Mario lands on the same frame he jumps on a Mechakoopa. This ends up clearing the spinjump and you get a normal bounce off the Mechakoopa which stuns it instead of destroying it. Once you have one stunned you can hold it to do normal jumps with A, which lets you more easily stun another or restun that one.
@thirdlavadolphin4594
Oh, wow. I wasn't aware of that same-frame trick.
@SomeGuy712x I would share a video but I only ever saw it on twitter. To the best of my knowledge no one has actually done the whole fight toolless in this way. It probably isn't unreasonably difficult but does not seem like much fun.
19:13 jrose11 said "beeg" lol
I always just thought that they were just called green bubbles
When I was a kid and got my SNES, I invited over a friend who had yet to get one, and he ignored my explanation of the controls and proceeded to spin-jump on everything and also not run. Eventually he had to ask for another explanation of the controls because not having regular jump or run has you meet barriers much sooner.
So does cape-spinning the mechakoopas kill them like spin-jumping on them does?
Bro I clicked on ts and got the meanest whiplash from your voice, like "IT'S THE POKEMON GUY"
Wake up, jrose12 uploaded
It's funny, because I used to play like this as a kid. Not because of the challenge, but because I thought the spin jump looked cooler
Not using savestates to cut out the time needed to get extra lives and capes? Yeah, it’s a Jrose challenge. Love when we get videos on this channel haha
I was unreasonably proud of myself for guessing Valley of Bowser 4 secret exit as being the third impossible exit.
11 or 12, makes no difference. JRose content is always class.
19:15 beeeeeg jump
27:14 as a kid i always called them ghost jello lol
I really like seeing videos like this: conceptual challenges that I've never thought about with games I know kinda well and seeing how far you push that concept.
This is basically how I played SMW as a kid. I'd taken "A = jump" as gospel from Super Mario Land and other games, so I never thought to try B until much later.
16:23 I called them boogers as a kid
28:19 wait bro got a NORMAL jump!!!
You had a much easier time with that ghost house, than hellhound twin sisters would, bau bau...
I considered this challenge for a while, nice work!
29:54 - aw, I thought he was about to bounce on Saw 3D... 🤔
...
Okay I'll see myself out... 🚪 🚶
"Oh boy, a jrose video, time for a nice challenge video for pokemo- MARIO?!?"
Nice.
I actually tried this for myself last year since SMW is one of my favorite and most replayed games. Seems like we ran into a lot of the same issues, but I have a few things to note that I think you'll find interesting:
First, you actually did Butter Bridge 1 the hard way. All you need to do is go in with a cape, spin jump into the first Koopa in a way where you knock him into his shell and can grab the shell again (like you did at 22:36), and then just play through the rest of the level normally holding the shell. The Koopa will eventually jump out of the shell causing you to lose your feather, but as long as you're prepared for that it's not a problem. Pretty sure you could even avoid that by periodically kicking the shell up and catching it again. That spin jump can be a little tricky to get right, but since it happens right near the beginning, it's not that big of an issue if you mess up.
Second, both Ludwig's Castle and Valley of Bowser 4 secret exit are actually possible! I was unable to beat them myself, but looking into it I eventually found a RUclipsr called SomeGuy712x who did a bunch of zero B press challenge videos back in 2010, and he managed both of those levels. He even remade Ludwig's Castle in response to this specific video, so there's a chance you already saw it. I'd link to those videos, but YT can sometimes be weird about hiding comments with links, so I'll just give you the exact titles to look up if you're curious
"Super Mario World - Ludwig's Castle Cleared Without Pressing the B Button"
"Super Mario World - Valley of Bowser 4 Secret Exit Without Pressing the B Button"
Lastly, and this might be either the most or least interesting thing to hear, but I actually managed a glitch where I did a spin jump on a Mechakoopa, took damage, and somehow knocked it down it as if I just did a regular B jump. Although I only managed it 1 time out of probably 2-3 dozen tries and was never able to recreate it (I'm playing on original hardware, so no options for save states). I don't know if this was a super specific frame-perfect trick that couldn't be reasonably replicated without a TAS bot, or maybe it's only possible on that one specific Mechakoopa in that specific location in the room before the actual Bowser fight, but it does give me confidence that Bowser could be possible with zero B presses. As for how I did it, I was spin jumping into it at an angle where I was trying to both hit it and take damage at the exact same frame, and it worked on something like my second try. Like I said, I couldn't replicate it, so I have no idea if it's reliably repeatable.
Super mario land 2 with the spin jumps only 😉
Best Mario game ever.
This guy likes everything I like
Loving the F-Zero music!
We need more Mario games on JRose12!
I love this game. It’s simple in modern terms but it’s just so tight . You can play it straight through or take your time. Really hits that sweet spot
Beat Super Mario World with Fire Mario only/Fire Flower.
30:36 usually I fly over with Yoshi and use him as double jump mechanic.
It is weird that in some challenges you can get to the final boss but not beat him
Im loving the Turtles in Time Music in the background
This should be on the main channel
Thank you for make
Given that the any% speedrun is under 2 minutes, yes there is a bug to skip to the credits.
27:10 They're called Big Bubbles. I always thought they were either acid, ectoplasm, or both.
First game I ever played. My journey in gaming began Aprilish 2002.❤
Great video. Enjoyed the challenge and learning about which ones you actually can't complete.
F-zero music, nice, I hope you make a video on that game as well
That's going to make a lot of levels nearly impossible
Yooooooo it's the Digimon guy!
Can't wait to see you Kaizo journey man. loved you in the Barb Dram 3 comment section.
Wait till game champ does it
Those are big green fart bubbles.
One of my favorite games
use the cloud glitch to beat bowser and ludwig's castle
o this is a neat treat
Another interesting challenge that I've done is no running
It wasn't a complete run because it was just part of a visit with my niece, and my brother challenged me to see if I could do it
Being 10 years ago, I don't remember it all, but I got decently far before it was time to leave. It made me really think about the game's physics in many areas. When you jump while going backwards, you don't lose any speed - this made sliding down hills backwards critical for jumps that would be otherwise impossible, and if I had a Blue Yoshi, I could zoom across the map in reverse- Did that on one of the Special levels, think it was the one with the flying fish
Had to break the rules on the castle with the falling ceiling though. That, and when I was required to pick something up, I'd stutter step to simulate just walking.
You are a madman for doing this! I am excited to see if it's possible.
Edit after watching: you can cape spin the koopa toys on the ground with a without jumping right? You just need to press it before you build up your speed. Then just kick them onto bowser to beat him. Maybe not though, it's been awhile since I played SMW.
I hope you do more videos like this!
35:43 just casually *redid the run*. Just Jrose things.
I actually have done it 5 times lol, there were 4 different playthroughs used in this video
This is my favorite Mario game. I played it all the time when I went to my dad's
I saw the title of this video, and figured it wouldn't be that hard. There's an obvious gotcha at some point, but otherwise the entire game is just as easy as if you hadn't banned the normal jump button... provided you're not so bad at the game that you have to rely on Yoshi to tank through anything.
This is so cool! Thank you for making this!
The green bubble search light things I believe are supposed to be ghost lights
Nice jumping
I cannot imagine how tough must be NOT to accidentally jump due to muscle memory omfg
But can you beat this game without feeling nostalgic?
Ok now do it with an Abra
This was hella dope! I enjoyed this one
Mario 64 has the A Button Challenge. SMW now has the B Button Challenge!
Except since you can't beat Bowser, the B button challenge is implausible unless you resort to ACE or item box manipulation.
@TheBlackSeraph The game doesn't have to be entirely beatable. The A button challenge is mainly concerned with the original N64 release of Super Mario 64 and you still need at least one A press to beat the game on that version.
@TheDream64 Valid, but then the popularity of the SM64 Minimum A button challenge was that there was always theoretical room for improvement, and when the challenge began there was no clearly defined hard ceiling - Bowser could be beaten without jumping, careful routing and good movement tech eliminated many problems. To that end, the game is considered beatable with 0 A presses (or is it 0.5?) on the Wii VC because of expanding knowledge tech. SMW, on the other hand, will always have a hard minimum of 3 glitchless due to the Bowser fight, and that's assuming timing lines up well and Bowser always throws out two mechakoopas.
@TheBlackSeraph Supposedly from other comments under this video its possible to grab a mechakoopa with a psin jump by landing on the ground on the same frame as you hit it
Love that you're posting here!
Just found this channel … it’s awesome you are extending your challenges beyond Pokemon. Subbed.
Love this challenge … sad it ends with bowser.
13:28 would have helped you with 30:30. That's how you take advantage of it, lmao.
I had no idea you could take off with the cape using spin jump
16 minutes in the video and I just heard a remix of the stapler boss theme from paper Mario the origami King.
There are plattformers which do not have jumping btw.
Snakepass is... really interesting. You may get cramps in your hands though. :P
I was able to find a fairly easy way to complete VoB4. It involves some niche Yoshi trivia, some of which I didn't even know until trying (I was trying something else that, in retrospect, was way more difficult). I uploaded a video explaining it if anyone wants to watch, but man I just love Jrose covering my favorite childhood games regardless
5:22 jump jump . . .why am I the way I am?
32:20 funny number
27:15 they look like bubbles to me
If u use item swap glitch u can bring an item to Bowser which makes u win instantly...I think it was the orb from the shipwreck. U can get it with a glitch in lvl 1 or 2.
Also I think there was a glitch that let's u bring Yoshi in a castle.maybe a blue Yoshi works in the 1 u could not beat
Fun fact boos name is Teresa
Green bubbles
I got pretty high! And that's pretty cool!
Hey JR
you rule
So weird not seeing a pokemon video from you lol
Yump hype!!!!
Gg
