I bought a game and I don't know if it's rented or not
it's not actually 24hr. you need to return your disc the next day before 9pm whehter what time you got it.
I really liked this movie and found it quite educational and interactive. I am just getting used to using the ATM rather than my bank teller so I will now venture and try Redbox. Thanks for the great video.
Thanks so much for this video. I just got my 83 year old Mom a DVD player. She then asked, "so how do I get a movie to watch?" Duh! I never thought about how she didn't know how to get a movie! We live 6 hours away, so showing her in person was not an option. I found this and emailed her and told her to "you tube up" Martin Johnson's video. I'm sure that she will go down to the box at her local CVS and will be calling soon to tell about her Red Box conquest!

Do you guys still have video rental shops? We have so few entertainment options in my part of the world, it's ridiculous. Whereas in the 90s's it was a treasure trove of quality entertainment, everywhere.

I just learned that something called Redbox existed today! Obviously not for me, as a non-American, of course. We don't have anything, except YT and Netflix... but I sure as heck am curious about the entertainment solutions that still exist in the world at all.
I deeply wish we had this where I live.
I remember when I visited America in 2012. Outside a grocery store in Chicago (where I bought a banana pie yogurt for the first time in my life) there was a couple of RedBoxes. I had no idea what it was, and since I was suffering from constant sleep deprivation there (partly because of jetlag and mostly because I need my own bed to get proper rest), I just stored it at the back of my head and didn't think about it again before I read an article about it a couple of years later.
Haha! ^^ You still remember a meal from the US? Same here. I only ever had a layover in Newark on my way to South America once, and so I bought a burger and milkshake at a 50's style diner - where your booth is like an old red Cadillac. 👌🏻 [I love the whole classic 50's Americana vibe] This was around 2012'ish, too.
And… yeah, to this day that was by far the most memorable burger and milkshake I've ever had in my life!

Aw... let your kid have the honour of taking out the disc! This generation is barely even experiencing a physical reality anymore. Let him at least grab the mechanically ejected disc!
I let my kid do everything possible... because I know it's all fading: Paying at the counter with my bills/coins, swiping my card, pressing the bus "stop" button, turning the key in my ignition... you name it. I even dug out some cassettes and let him play around with unspooling and dusting off tapes. Anything I do at home with tools and handywork, I let him have a go at. You have no idea how much all of that means to a generation that almost knows nothing other than touch-screens. And, yes, I see the comedy in this. But... let him at least grab the disc!
PS: I know this is 8 years old. But I only heard about redbox today, and, as a non-American, I'm still trying to catch up with all these little luxuries you guys have. Did you know most of the world only has access to Netflix? Pretty crazy. In the 90's we could rent/buy _anything._ And you would get most Hollywood movies and shows through the TV eventually, anyway.

Pretty sure your card details will be on file so if you don't return it they charge late fees or something
Use a visa gift card with like $5. They will not be able to keep charging you because you used a “untraceable” card

There is a whole in the middle of the case where it reads the QR code on the disc.
It is programmed to read a code of the disc. If it's unable to read, the machine won't accept it. And if you fail to return it on time, it will charge you for the second day since it already has your card number.
OK so what if I photocopied the disc?
It's not like they can't see who returned it last before the next renter complains the disc isn't real...

No i dont think it can, the bar code seems to be on the case rather on the disk. They should print that on the disk somehow.

They have your Credit Card information and will probably charge you as a purchase.

These "Red Boxes" do not look _waterproof_ at all. I wonder, how they don't go out of order in the rain and in the storms.
They dont have to be waterproof just weather proof or under a roof.
I don't know... but ATM's and phone booths (etc.) don't seem to have had any problems, ever.
One thing's for certain, though: waterproof touch-screen panels does not surprise me in the slightest. I think that's pretty "run of the mill" at this point.

The screen on the machine shows how to do it. Just swipe the card. It is censored because of privacy.

Can these tell if you put the correct disc back in or not or can you just return a Counting Crows cd and get away with it as a podcast once jokingly suggested?
I can only suppose it wouldn't be able to tell that.
The video ("short") I saw before this one, was "Have you ever done this at Redbox before?" - or something to that effect - and it was some teen laughing about returning the wrong disc. It wasn't detailed or clear... but I think the machine scans the cover, not the disc itself, and if you "tricked it"... well, your credentials won't work anymore. I suppose the business model has taken all these factors into consideration, and it's still worth it.
Regardless, I don't think it's going to be a business crippling trend of people tricking the machine, lol. For 2$ a rental? And you're going to damage your customer account forever for the benefit of running off with one movie? Come on…
What i do is make a iso copy of the move and rip a mp4 from it. Then upload it to plex.

Justin Pettit no. Your best bet to use cash is to buy a reloadable cash card at a convenience store (or wherever else you can obtain them) Redbox machines do not accept cash and they do not sell a physical gift card anywhere.
