Excellent video, Gene! I had seen your earlier video and went out and bought a on HF sander like yours and a leather belt. It works great and makes stropping so much easier and for a great price. I appreciate all the helpful hints you have given us over the years and I am a better carver as a result!! THANK YOU SO MUCH for all you do to help us!!!

Thank you Gene for this informative video. I live in Canada and we don't have Harbor Freight but a store called Princess Auto and I got one on clearance for $61.00 just waiting for my leather belt to be delivered from Amazon and I'm all set. Thanks again.

Gene, thanks for the you tube. I have the harbor freight set up. I have used harbor freight for years. If it’s a tool I need for limited use why pay to get a professional price for something not used often. However, I have harbor freight tools I have used for years frequently. I know it may not be Dewalt but if it gets the job done I’m happy. On the speed. On line I found a variable rheostat extension cord that can reduce the speed without having to do any electrical rework.

I had no idea there were power strops! I'm using a classic barber shop style strop ( quite happily I must add) but it does take time. And when you've several knives....
That's for opening my eyes Gene

I took your advice from before and got one ( Harbor Freight type) along with a leather belt. Do you leave the belt on the machine all the time? I have heard that the belt will stretch. Also do you put the compound on the smooth side or the rough side of the belt? I have heard different opinions. Thanks for all your information. Bruce from the City of Orange in Orange County Claifornia.

Bruce >>I have also heard the belt can stretch if you leave it on ..I have left it on and had no problems but it could of course ..you sharpen on the smooth side and put the compound on the smooth side .. Thanks for watching Bruce

Hi Gene.. Where did / do you get replacement belts for the more expensive machine. I have one I bought in AZ about 25 or so years ago.. Similar machine.. I'm sure the company is no longer in existence. I messed up my leather by adding neatsfoot oil to it and it softened it too much. I'd like to replace it.

I happened to see your video on this machine before so tried it and it works great. I mounted the base of the machine to a thick piece of wood and then turned it on its back and mounted it to a bench so the belt turned the way you showed. Maybe someday when this one wears out and I can save up a little extra money I may buy the one from Chipping Away but until then this one is working great.

You might need to spend a bunch of money on hearing protection so you would loose some of your savings. Could not hear a word you said when that machine was on. They don't sell them in Canada because it does not meet CSA standards so we pay more for protection from poor quality dangerous stuff made overseas that could hurt you. You will end up replacing the things so why not save up and buy a good quality long lasting machine once. Hearing aids are about $3000.00. I used a hand strop for years and it still works just fine. I also have one of those TOMZ Knife massager. He made them out of a Lazy Boy massage motor with one or two rotating wheels with leather and diamond discs etc. You have to google it I don't know if he is around anymore. They rotate nice and slow so you don't burn anything. I'm sure somone who is trying to save money could make something like that on their own.

Rick we wear hearing protection in the U.S. for many machines .. My band saw is loud .. I worked in a chemical plant for 40 years at a boiler house and the noise was unbelievable ..so noise is nothing for me .. My machine sharpener is better ,,but a lot of people cant afford that machine ..so hearing protection helps
