Visiting Porvoo is a no-brainer since it's so near Helsinki. The old town is its main attraction, but there's plenty to explore besides it. The hill fort next to the old town and just the coastal countryside in general come to mind.

Porvoo is indeed a very beautiful and cozy town. I’ve been there twice and I really liked the charm of the old wooden town. It seemed a bit crowded to me, but that's expected, as it's quite a popular place to visit and I’ve been there on weekends. Thank you for your comment 😊

I would recommend you to take a steamer in the Summer from Helsinki to Porvoo and/or v.v.
There's one also between Turku and Naantali - both excellent Summer destinations.
      Further recommendations:
      - Koli in Northern Karelia by the Lake Pielinen is one of the natural wonders of Finland
      - Rauma old town
      - Louhisaari Manor/Castle, the birthplace of Marshal Mannerheim
      - Savonlinna, definitely during the Summer and if you like opera, during the opera festival, otherwise before or after that
      - Punkaharju
      - Lapland in general (the Santa Claus village NOT included)
      - Ahvenanmaa/Åland by car or by bike
      - the Turku Archipelago Ring Road
      - Fiskars Village
      - Loviisa old town

Congratulations from a Swedish neighbour ! You were really fortunate when you boldly took a step into the unknown and it turned out to be Finland. All the Nordic countries are great but Finland is the most admirable of them. Finland used to be the eastern part part of Sweden until the days of Napoleon and was badly missed when it was lost in war to the Russians. Finland is now the first free country that managed to stand up successfully against the big eastern neighbour and hopefully Ucraine will turn up to be the sacond one. You made the perfect move.

On the other hand, the troubled history with Russia and fighting for our independence has truly made us Finns and Finland, what we are today. And because of our hard history we truly love our country And we are very proud of the earlier generations and their sacrifices. They remind us, what is truly important and valuable. And I feel, that you Olia have found the true source of joy and balance in your life.

Uncertainty and waiting just drain you out. I truly hope that in the future you'll find the perfect place for you, where you'll be welcomed and granted the rights to call it home. I used to live In Toronto Canada. Best I can tell, Toronto is a 1000 miles south of Helsinki. I grew up in Atlanta Georgia which is equivalent to southern Spain. I suppose Helsinki being on the water keeps the temperature up and the REAL cold happens once you go inland a hundred miles or so.
One amazing fact to me is ST Petersburg is not far from Helsinki but it has 5 million people in the town. That's an extremely high population for so far north. Why do you think that is? Also, are you tempted to visit St Petersburg or do tensions between the two countries forbid the option?
I too got permanent resident status when I dodged the draft during the Viet Nam war era in 1970. I went back home at the end of the war when dodgers were granted amnesty
So happy for the efficient way you all were accepted into the Finnish culture. You, yourself, are a great ambassador for the country and, perhaps, played a part in the immediate acceptance of your application.
I know I wanna go there after watching one of your videos! 😉
PS I think its your delivery that takes any combativeness out of one lucky enough to stumble upon your videos

    • @lifebyolia
      @lifebyolia  6 месяцев назад +1

I was surprised to realize that Helsinki is almost the same latitude as Anchorage Alaska. The impact of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf Stream make the winters here more or less mild. I grew up in the north-west of Ukraine which is about 650 miles south of Helsinki, but the winter temperatures there are the same as in Helsinki. The main difference I can point is that Helsinki gets a lot more snow.
I guess there are several factors that can explain the difference in population between Helsinki and St Petersburg.
First. Russia is a large country, but the quality of life outside of big cities is very poor. So people from all over their big country move to the few cities that can offer at least some standard of living, and one of them is St Petersburg. On the contrary Finland can offer a good quality of life even in small towns and villages.
Second. It becomes even more interesting when you look at the graph of population growth in St Petersburg. In 1944 the population dropped to half a million because of the siege. But then in just 5 years it grew back to almost 2.5 million. The answer is mass relocations from other parts of the Soviet Union.
As for your question about visiting St Petersburg, no, I don’t really want to go there. I have my reasons for it 🙂
It’s really interesting to read your life story, thank you for sharing it. Sounds like you went through quite a journey, but I’m glad to hear that you could return back home.
Ah, thank you so much for your kind words about my videos, I’m very flattered :) I hope you get the chance to visit Finland someday!

The Holodomor is of course only one of many reasons. The current russian criminal war against Ukraine is obviously the main reason. Perhaps you have heard of that war...?
Please do not parrot the narrative of the russian illegal regime. Russia and only russia is to blame - as always.
All border crossings between Finland and russia are closed for all traffic - except for freight trains. Let's keep it that way.

Ah, your comments mean more than you can think, they always inspire and encourage me. Your kind words are much appreciated and I’m grateful to you 🤗😌 Happy to hear you enjoyed this simple video too. Hyvinkää is quite close to Helsinki, so I think I'll go there someday. Just have to wait for the green to come back because everything looks gray right now 😅 Thank you so much, Tom, for the congratulations and for your kind words about us 🥰🥰🙏
