I wouldn't think less of someone for collecting toe nails, far as hobbies go that one's pretty forgivable. I personally collect bottle caps. People often open bottles with their teeth, their hands, I even knew someone who used his hip bone. Some caps I find in public and pick up from the ground, virtually never wash them unless they are visually grimy. I never pick up caps from alcoholic drinks though, as a rule, because they really do smell.
My guess why aliens haven't contacted us is that they're like the Tollan from Stargate where they dont want lesser civilizations to get their hands on their tech and then nuke themselves out of existenence
