this is part 2 on tig welding low alloy high strength steel parts. it includes a review on part 1 where a 500f preheat was used to slow the cooling rate. Part 2 is the second TIG pass and a discussion of preheat and interpass temperature requirements. The interpass temp requirements for carbon and low alloy steels is different from stainless. With carbon steel and low alloy high strength steels, a minimum preheat and minimum interpass temperature is called for. With stainless, the objective is to limit the time at elevated temperatures so no preheat and a maximum preheat temp of 250 or 350f is common.
It wont hurt to let it cool a lot more on stainless steels.

I think I have watched about 100 of your videos and am still awed and amazed at your skill. What a Craftmaster you are. And you are so openly honest about the products you sell it isn't cheesy like so many others in RUclips land. Going buy a tee shirt from the store now to make sure you can keep gifting us with the vids.

Back in the day we welded 4140 round pins approx 4 inch dia to T1 steel and the weld procedure called for .045 MIG single pass 1/2 fillet after 500 deg. F preheat and then bury in dry clean floor sweep for post weld slow cooling. While we were welding one pin and collar plate, the next one was being heated with a torch using a torch holder and flame directed onto the part. There wan never a reported weld failure on and ot the parts which were used on heavy equipment booms and related. 045 wire ran hot is very efficient for this application .

Great video Jody (as always)! I would order more TIG fingers if they didn't last so darn long! I ordered a 3 pack when you first started selling them, gave 2 away to friends, and mine is still in great shape. Thanks Jody!

Hey Jodie I was watching you while dead C clamp I had a C clamp I bought from a yard sale and I didn’t realize when you’re screwed it all the way down it was like 4 inches from the where are you pinch the word goes up against the other end of the sea clamps and it’s like I section dark by 4 inches maybe 4 1/2 and I did like you did beveled it all up in tact and everything and I had some nice broad from when I worked on at the pencil plant in Rossville I got some when we were tearing the plant down I just grabbed a whole bunch of it you know front they said I could have it so anyway I spilled a flex off and use that for welding it and I’ll tell you it’s holding up good so far and I did preheat it and stuff like that and I kept it hot as I went but since then I bought a needle scalerBut anyway I’m a firm believer even on the Castile or something like that to use a needle scaler keeps everything normalized anyway I really appreciate your tenacity I have a Miller to 10 dynasty to 10 DX and water cold in remote foot pedal and all that anyway I’m stone deep under the amateur category I’m having fun with it and you have a nice day you’ve taught me a lot I wish I could come down and work with yardwork for free someday I will

Temp crayons dont lie. Just keep the verification mark outside of weld zone. Look at the code if it is needed it will tell ya the distance from weld zone needed to verify preheat.

What about Post Heating? Is it required or should it be done? I am looking at a job right now and the engineer has requested a Post Weld Stress Relief but from what I could tell you were able to let this cool naturally.

Is the tig finger designed big enough to fit over gloves used for mig welding? I only mig weld yet i find my fingers getting toasty due to thicknesses of metal i weld and awkward hand positioning.
