  • Elephant zone is back with cute alert for the elephant lovers. Today we are going to present you rare footage of twin baby elephant birth in an elephant orphanage home. It is reported in Elephant orphanage home, Pinnawala, Sri Lanka. Both calves and mother in healthy conditions. Both are male calves. The first calf was born around 4 am and second calf at 10 am. Twin elephant birth in orphanage home is very rare worldwide, although several cases reported in national parks and natural forests.
This elephant orphanage home was established by department of wildlife conservation Sri Lanka in 1975 for feeding and providing care and sanctuary to orphaned baby elephants that were found in the wild. In its long history this orphanage home sheltered numerous injured elephants and abandoned calves who were unable to survive in the wild.
The proud mother of these cute calves named Surangi. She was brought to this orphanage home in 1997 when she was 9 months old. Her mother had been killed by cruel hunters.
This is the father of these cute babies. He is named as Pandu who was brought to this elephant orphanage home in 2004. He was found abandoned in forest border when he was only 1 year old.
Elephants have the ability to give birth to twins, although it is rare. They usually only give birth to one. An elephant can give birth to calves up to 12 times in their life. There is only around 1% of possibility for an elephant to have twins, according to the society for protection of animals abroad.
Both calves are in very good health condition. The officials in the elephant orphanage home are highly dedicated to look after the orphaned elephants. The early diagnosed that this elephant mother is pregnant with twin babies by their regular check-ups in the pregnancy period. From that day they gave special care for the pregnant mother elephant by providing extra nutritious meals, supplements and increasing the amount of her daily feeding. As a result she gave healthy birth to these cute babies.
The mother elephant is in happy mood and she is overwhelmed with joy because of the unexpected treasure she found. She does not show any objections towards the staff even though they cuddle the babies so closely, unlike the other elephant mothers who become violent when the strangers try to be closer to the newly born calves. The two babies are also very familiar with the staff as if they’ve instinctively recognized their love and affection.
The department of Wildlife Conservation has to bear a huge cost daily to provide milk and medicines to orphaned elephants daily. But the staff dedicatedly look after the orphaned elephants as elephants are considered vulnerable and sacred animals. The orphaned elephants are looked after in semi-controlled environment. They try to provide the experience of natural environment to the elephants as far as they can. The elephants are regularly carried to natural rivers for bathing.
This elephant orphanage home differ from other elephant orphanage centres, since they’ve given high attention to elephant’s welfare. Stay with us to get more updates about these cuties. Don’t forget to subscribe us and click the bell icon to be notified when a new video is uploaded.

This is so sad..every new scene in this whole video has chains. Doesn’t matter if the elephants r walking across the street, in the water, hanging out, etc and to top it off..what do u think those sticks the men r carrying r for? You know what this reminds me of?!?! The way the circus use to treat their animals. I can’t even describe the way my heart hurts. This is so sad and heartless. Get a different occupation or hobby bc those animals (that have feelings) deserve better. And I honestly feel the majority if not all of them would have been better off if you left them where they were. They are not yours to keep and/or abuse. I don’t care what your excuse is about the chains. I’m telling u it’s wrong and evil. Also, put the sticks and branches down you bullies. Let them roam free. Ur not a sanctuary doing good for them..ur cruel. Tbh I’m not sure how you sleep at night! It’s a shame n a scam!

This poor mother is displaying stereotypical signs of extreme stress: head bobbing, rocking, trunk raised, tail stiffness, etc. Being chained, with no control over her babies situation, and lacking vital support of her herd must be a nightmare for her. Who is your resident expert in elephant behavior and why are they tolerating this situation? I think you mean well, BUT...💔

@@ElephantZone Thank you very much for your reply. It shows you have concern for their well-being. However, if you know elephants you must know that the mother's behaviour indicates high stress. I understand the reasons for chaining the mother, but perhaps the model you follow could be improved to be more like those of sanctuaries - such as Elephant Nature Park in Thailand where elephants, even new mothers are never chained. The new mothers and calves are left free in a good size enclosure with piles of sand for sleeping and dusting, food for the mothers, and baths of water for babies to play. Other females frequently visit the mothers and babies, and I have never heard of any aggression. Indeed if it was a problem I am sure it would be addressed. Please try.

In the DSWT they raise orphan elephants, they never chained them. When they are released back in the wild after rehabilitation, they bring their wild born babies to show their caregivers. Extremely SAD to see this poor mother's leg chained while in a walled barred enclosure. The bull elephant standing on a concrete floor and 2 of his legs are chained. Concrete is very hard on their feet. The poor mother elephant is constantly swaying her head a sign of extreme stress. Why was the mother bred in captivity when there are so many elephants that need to be rescued? Although it is great to see twin baby elephants the fact that this place is mating and breeding elephants is purely for money and self-interest. Where are their morals and ethics? Shame on these folks who call themselves rescuers.

Humans rescued these parents as babies and then chained them up in their enclosures. I wonder if they had rather be dead than live their lives like prisoners. Likely these twins will have the same fate as their parents.

The elephants are chained for a temporary period. Because if the elephant parents start to wander here and there in the orphanage home young calves will also begin to follow them. There are about 80 elephants in the orphanage home roaming freely in the outside and if the other elephants try to get closer to the calves the mother elephant may become aggressive and it may lead fights and conflicts among the adult elephants. Eventually it may be a threat to the safety of tender calves. When the calves grow older chains are removed.

These animals are stressed because they are chained or in small cages. It's goid to take care of these magnificent animals. But they need to have space to move around. Please change the way you care for these animals. Give them space to form herds just like in the wild.

What concerns me is that the mother is showing signs of repetitive stress syndrome AND NOT swaying back and forth because she is "filled with joy" as the voiceover suggests. They are shackled in chains...even when taken to the river they are held captive with chains attached to large rocks on the river bank. Something is not adding up. Even the babies were being fed grass which their bodies can't handle at that age ...only mother's milk for the first 3-6 months after birth.

How can this be called a sanctuary when you have elephants chained? The mother appears to be stressed. You say you are different from other orphanages and you care about the elephants welfare but still use chains? The male had no room to move and his food was laid out amongst his own fecal matter and urine. Watching that poor mother not being able to move was heartbreaking.

It's the fact that the parents are stressed (Swaying is distress) and chained, the fact that an elephant orphange bred elephants when the parents need care in the first place and the fact that the channel's been mostly pasting the same two answers and spreading misinformation on elephant behavior and justifying chains, when there is no excuse for chains. Also, if you notice in that same paste regarding chains, they never give an explanation as to why the father is also chained.

Just like Kavaan the mother elephant is extremely stressed and suffering by rocking back and forth. This is a very cruel place notice also the bullhooks which are never appropriate in elephant sanctuaries. I would advise everyone to avoid this place due to the extremely poor treatment of it's elephants.
