Mad Max is one of Australia's most famous cultural exports to the world. Furiosa is the most expensive Australian film ever made, which is why it's such a shame it's bombed.
However, I do highly recommend watching Fury Road. It is possibly the greatest action film of the 2010s, borderline perfection.

@@Jeremy_the_unfallible_n-a Warner Bros didn't make Furiosa. They have distribution right to it, but it wasn't their production. The film was made by Kennedy Miller Mitchell, who own the Mad Max IP (Warner doesn't own Mad Max). This is also why the film was half-funded by the New South Wales state government, with additional tax-offsets by the federal Australian government.
Warner put up half the money, so they were important. But it is an Australian film. It was written, shot, edited, directed, produced and entirely made within Australia using substantial Australian funding, with a cast that is largely Australian.
It is by definition, an Australian film. A US company providing half-funding doesn't revoke that.

I usually don't recomend machetes order viewing because most of the time prequels retcons the mistery from the originals or they don't have the same visual style.
(Thats why i don't recomend the star wars prequels first for several reasons)
But this is one of the few ocations i don't mind recomending furiosa first before fury road because it rally enrich your experience by furiosa beeing your first experience in the wasteland and fury road beeing your full own spectacle in the wasteland.
Its kinda like going from the original mad max, who was not that much of an action film and more like a revenge drama like furiosa, to the road warrior who just like fury road is the ultimate post-apocalyptic odyssey .

I think George Miller kind of explained it as a series of stories repeated/Told over time by the history men. So literally every main character has a backstory in the wasteland. Max is sorta a legend/Folk character who pops up and helps certain groups. The story is told from different perspectives/memories over time.

I would honestly suggest watching Fury Road, as the two stories are closely knit together and even Fury Road, despite being called "Mad Max" first, still is more of Furiosa's story. And I think that to you, someone who doesn't know Fury Road yet, the experience will be even better than for those who saw Fury Road first, since you now have the ground work to enjoy Furiosa's journey in that film.

  • @TheWickedWizardOfOz1

Furiosa is so intriguing because it's a perfect *prequel.* It is a fantastic movie in its own right, but it also does so much to develop a character beloved by fans, showing how she turns into that wholly "good" character. It details a wonderful character arc that ends in Fury Road.
Furiosa and the other Mad Max films have a touch of fantasy to them - for a world devoid of resources, everybody LOOOOOOVES their petrol, baby! - and you're meant to kinda roll with it. It is my favorite film franchise because despite all of the violence and horrible things that happen in them, they are really hopeful about humanity's capacity for goodness. We see it in Praetorian Jack (Furiosa's mentor/boyfriend in this movie) and we see it in Furiosa in Fury Road, and we see it in Max in the other movies - somebody who is out for himself until something breaks him each time and he decides to help others.
These movies are simple, they're really, really fun, and they have such solid character writing that you rarely see these days.

The thing you have to understand about Mad Max movies, is that there isn't really any good guys in the film. Everyone is either just trying to survive, and is extremely pragmatic about it. Or people want to take what others have out of pure "why not?" Dementes wasn't a great guy, but he DID have a vision of a world where people can do more than just survive. And relatively speaking, that actually makes him the good guy of the film. You can't fault Furiosa for wanting her revenge..but at the same time, many of the problems she has later in Fury Road wouldn't have been problems if she HAD sided with Dementes against Immorten Joe.

I would agree that this film was different than expected. I actually have seen most of the Mad Max movies especially Fury Road since I LOVE action movies. Fury Road is kinda the pinnacle of a pure action movie. After watching Furiosa, I was kinda disappointed since it just felt like a worse Fury Road. The pacing in Fury Road is so clean since it’s just one big car chase. Furiosa was meant to be an origin story which could work but we don’t really get to see Anya Taylor Joy talk and do much outside of action. I like Anya Taylor Joy and think she’s a good actress so I think it’s kinda a waste to put her in this kinda role. It also doesn’t make sense in universe since in universe either since Furiosa in Fury Road does most of the talking while Max is most mute. It just felt like they wanted to make another Fury Road Mad Max but with a women and I just don’t think that works with Anya Taylor Joy. Tom Hardy can play a purely physical action star and be fine especially when he has someone to bounce off of (Furiosa), but in this film there really isn’t anyone. This is a long rant so I’m basically saying that the movie was bad in comparison to Fury Road, on its own I probably would’ve liked it better.

    • @JessInDreams7
      @JessInDreams7 4 месяца назад +3

Yea, I think that’s the general consensus from fans of Fury Road that I’ve been seeing too. It’s was definitely nice for me since I had nothing to compare it to and the whole universe was new so to me I was like a kid in a candy shop ☺️ I also wasn’t expecting Furiosa to be mute for most of the movie, and it does make it harder to develop her as a character because we really don’t see her grow or change all that much throughout the movie that spanned quite a number of years in her life. I guess I really just liked her because she was played by Anya Taylor Joy, and she did a decent job speaking with her eyes haha.

Yea, I’m glad I got to watch it as an actual prequel, so I didn’t really have anything to compare it to and I didn’t know what happened in the later movies. More lore would’ve been welcomed, and removing Mad Max in the title would make more sense.

@@JessInDreams7 The thing about "Mad Max" is that the stories are kind of myth, so there's no real timeline for them. Furiosa is maybe the main character in Fury Road, but so is Maddeus Maxthew, but he's played by Tom Hardy (in the other... 3? Mad Max movies it was Mel Gibson). And there's some debate about whether or not it's even the same Max. So... the Mad Max Saga thing works because it's all just supposed to be kind of mythologized, and so Max not being in Furiosa isn't really all that important, it's just about a certain post-apocalyptic, automobile focused vibe.
