Google Pixel 6 Re-Review | Six Months Later...

  • Reviewing Google's Pixel 6 smartphone again six months later and ahead of the Pixel 7 launch, with long term thoughts on the camera tech, gaming performance, battery life and beyond. Google's phone has received many Android updates in 2022, including slick new features like call screening. But the Pixel 6 also has strong competition from the Oppo Find X5, Samsung's S22 series phones and the Xiaomi 12.
    Check out my reviews of the biggest and best new mobiles in 2022 for other ideas! Here's a link to buy if you fancy one of your own: howl.me/chvXd67optf
    Google's flagship is still one of my favourite camera phones, thanks to the simple point and shoot nature. On auto mode you'll get great looking photos even of moving subjects, pretty much every time. Of course the ultra-wide lens isn't as impressive as rivals, while the Oppo Find X5 is hot competition for the Pixel 6 in low light.
    Gaming seems to be a smoother, more enjoyable experience after some Tensor fine tuning or other background updates. Genshin Impact plays with a more stable frame rate on higher detail settings. And while battery life isn't quite as good as six months ago, the Pixel 6 still happily lasts a day on a single charge with around 6-7 hours of screen on time.
    Have you been using Google's smartphone as your full time blower? Let me know your own experiences below.

      @@shandysaada I don't necessarily consider that a bug because you have to remember the screen is a Samsung screen Samsung is notorious for that problem I think it's just a screen deflect with their technology. I have had numerous Samsung phones with that issue it seems to go away when you reboot and it's random on both Samsung and the pixel. So I don't consider that a bug that's more of a hardware issue that Samsung has to overcome. But I do find that ironic how literally none of these RUclipsrs like to talk about Samsung having the green tint issue but we want to talk about a pixel doing it every now and then. I'm just telling you there are a lot of people who hate Google and will literally say anything just to make their phones seem bad all while ignoring iPhone issues or Samsung issues

    Honestly though, the main reason why I didn’t go with the Pixel 6/6 Pro is because of how deep back orders were at launch. By the time I got paid about 2 weeks after launch, I would’ve been waiting till January to finally scoop it up.

    I've recently discovered your reviews, they're great (I can actually stand watching the whole thing). When you test the Bluetooth it would be great if you could explore what codecs are supported, it's rarely mentioned but vital for anyone who has splashed out on the latest adapters or headphones. If you Google 'does this phone have LDAC?', you invariably find someone declaring that Android 8 and above supports it, or if it has such and such processor it will, it's all b*****ks. Phones always have the option in the developer settings, but you don't know if it works until you try it.

    • @varunnarain50
      @varunnarain50 2 года назад +3

      Definitely wanna test it out yourself if you can. My Samsungs have supported LDAC for a long time but my iPhone’s AAC codec sounds just about the same as LDAC on my Samsung, which is to say, they both sound excellent and full bodied with good instrument separation. My friend’s pixel 6 also supports LDAC but I have no clue how it sounds myself.

    • @Grrrr3FKAGrrrrGrrrrGrrrr
      @Grrrr3FKAGrrrrGrrrrGrrrr 2 года назад +2

      @@varunnarain50I find AAC to be fine for audio that is already compressed (using iPod or iPad with Qudelix 5K receiver), but with ALAC and FLAC files I notice a big drop in performance compared to a USB DAC connection. With my Samsung tablet LDAC seems a step closer to USB, but only noticeable with FLAC and range is very poor on the 990kbps setting.
      My choice of phone came down to pixel or Samsung because I care about updates to security and OS more than outright performance. I've ordered a Samsung on sale or return, I'll see how it goes.

    • @whosdr
      @whosdr Год назад +1

      I think look out for Bluetooth LE devices in the future as it mandates specific open-source codecs. Hopefully the days of needing to check compatibility are numbered.

I got an LG V60 as my personal phone & the display is quite a bit better not just brighter, I played the same videos on both phones on youtube. The camera seems pretty good like most phones for auto mode there is more saturation than I would like personally but I think this is most people's preference these days.

    I agree with this review 👍. Bought an unlocked pro at launch, and now at this point in time the most annoying bugs I get are typically graphical UI freezes which usually fix with a lock/unlock or at worse a reset.

    My P6 has been very reliable since November, I have not had many of the issues I hear about on various forums. I do experience the high network battery drain, but most of the time I am on wifi and get two solid full days out of my phone. I have noticed a bug recently where when I lock my phone, it locks to the lock screen, and then fades to black after 30 seconds. I have also been experiencing a bug where it will sit at the lock screen and not turn off the display after the 30 seconds until I interact with the device or press the power button again. Nothing major, but little use case gripes.

    I have to say the battery life has been the only disappointment I've had with this phone. Looking at battery usage it always seems to be related to Mobile Network drain. I've heard there should be a update in June that should help/fix this... hopefully. I still get a full days worth, so I can't really complain but considering how big the battery is (6 pro) I was expecting a little more.
    Besides the battery drain I still love the Pixel 6 pro and has been a great phone. There were a couple minor bugs that since been resolved and would say Dec/Jan is when the updates were pretty rough and Jan is when I really started noticing battery drain issues. The software is still fantastic and the hardware design is still very slick compared to other phones out there and don't regret my purchase .

    The two parts I've struggled with most are the Bluetooth that disconnects a lot, or won't reconnect (happens to me on at least 4 of my Bluetooth devices), and the short battery life, it's usually flat before 6pm for me, around 12 hours after coming off a full charge. I have 4 scans of the same thumb print as it is quite picky and often decides it doesn't recognise me. It occasionally does things like display sensitive content on the lock screen (it's set to hidden). I like the phone but I find it very buggy and frustrating at times. Just swapped up from a Huawei P30 for this Pixel 6 (sorta sea-foam spume colour!) the UI is a dream plus very little bulkware make it so damn easy to get around.
    I'm from the NW England and I speak Spanish, some Greek and Russian and the translation app is crazy smart and helps me out when I went to check that I'm saying the right thing!
    Camera is another reason why I decided to buy it and the colours are simply excellent, my Huawei was great, but lots of the images came out way to vibrant and over saturated.
    Exactly right about putting it down somewhere safe coz it's like a bar of soap and will fly of the edge of an uneven surface and take a crash to the ground.

The fingerprint sensor seemed to get more laggy and frustrating and the Call Screening feature disappeared which was something I really liked (has it come back yet?).
    Initially I could forego the increased size over the Pixel 5 when it all worked well but about a month ago I picked up an S22 at less than £500 direct from Samsung because the P6 was seriously doing my nut. Have had mine for three months. The battery life is excellent on wifi and LTE. Easily over 7 hours of screen on time. It is when I turn on 5g that the battery takes a massive hit. Lucky to get 4 or 5 hours of screen on time. It also gets quite toasty when using 5g along with navigation and music streaming. Not so much on LTE.

    It"s a great phone and the camera is top notch. My only niggle with it is its propensity to unlock itself whilst in my pocket without my fingerprint. Must be missing a setting somewhere.

    Decent phone overall, but few issues like buggy swipe up gesture at times i have to swipe up thrice in order to exit an app, camera app can get stuck at times, auto-brightness issues (dims more often out of no where) and the size is big although I am used to it now but still sometimes miss my ex pixel 3. Never encountered any gestures, auto-brightness and camera bugs in pixel 3 and pixel 4 xl though. Maybe got to do with the new tensor chip. It would have been better had they stuck with snapdragon.

    My experience with the phone had been irritating - terrible battery longevity, multiple UI bugs, and audio crackling when recording video.
    This goes back from the 4 XL before I got the 6. it’s sad to do this but I made the switch to the 13 pro :( battery life was the last straw for me

    Fingerprint sensor fails "a few times per day"? that's terrible imo, I'm on a, at this point very old, oneplus 6 now and the fingerprint works flawless, maybe 1 misread per week or so, i realize it's not build into the screen thus making it easier for oneplus compared to google. thank you for the review.

    I upgraded my wife's phone from the pixel4 to pixel6, great phone but... Google no longer give unlimited cloud storage for pictures and videos like they did for the pixel4, kind of annoying because she takes millions of photos and videos so I'll have to start paying for storage. that was definately a perk of previous models on a phone with no expandable storage

    • @seanbarnes9550
      @seanbarnes9550 2 года назад +6

  • @dplace
    @dplace 2 года назад +2

    I guess I'm lucky my Pixel 6 works great battery last all day I'm average user and most of all the finger print sensor hasn't been a issue. Software is so smooth to use great simplicity compared to a Samsung Galaxy with it's software on top of Android. To many double features that Android already has for example why I need Bixby when I already have Google assistant. Google Pixel and pure Android is the way to go .
