I'm from Norway and lived in Sweden for a semester, sharing a hallway / kitchen / living room with 10 other people. They were from Norway, Sweden, Austria, Germany and Hungary. Everyone took their shoes off. I remember having cleaning duty and the area by the door where we kept our shoes was UNIMAGINABLY full of gravel and almost ponds from either rain or snow. I am just so glad that nobody made the cleaning duty worse by having the whole kitchen, living room and hallways full of freaking GRAVEL!

I had a cultural shock the first time I went to the Netherlands and no one took off their shoes. It felt so gross to me. I tried to avoid walking on their carpets, especially in the bathrooms if there was a carpet I would jump around to try and avoid stepping on them. Even though I have visited the Netherlands a few times now, I'm still not over the fact that they wear their shoes inside and it makes my skin crawl when I go inside with shoes. It's not to such a degree as americans for instance, they do take them off after a while.

In hot countries there is far less stuff that can stick to your shoes, such as snow and mud, so a few wipes on the doormat will usually do the trick. Additionally many hot countries have plenty of venomous insects that enjoy crawling into your shoes so keeping them on reduces the risk of that happening. It's a cultural difference resulting from different climates, nothing more.

Both have climates that can best be described as temperate and both have cold winters. Take it from someone who lived in Japan to work as a ski instructor, not exactly a hot weather sport. Spaniard here. We don't do it. 1. It's not your house. Taking off your shoes here is considered something intimate, something you would only do at your home. 2. If the shoes are a little bit dirty, I can clean them. If they're soaking in dirt, I would ask for something for my feet.

I'm German and lived in Norway for a year. When my exchange organisation stressed how important it is in Norway to take off your shoes in the house I assumed they meant like taking off your shoes before you even step through the door because I just couldn't imagine how anyone would actually _wear shoes inside the house_ . Walking with outside shoes on inside will get you in trouble. Here in México people enter houses with shoes, we have the habit of mopping the floor continuously with chlorine, also because of our climate we don't have the mud problems that the countries where snow falls.
Exactly! I'm European latin and all my friends wear shoes inside the houses. Most people tend to have feet odor anyways! I prefer them to leave their shoes on. Nobody uses welcoming mats anymore or what?? They clean the dirt! Just rub the shoes on it a couple of times and it's done. We mostly use marble floors (cold floor) so it's easy to clean and dirt or water don't stick to them. Nordics use more wooden floors and carpets, I think. Swedish person here. I think any person from a Scandinavian country can agree that the coffee question is irrelevant. I mean, 50 cups of American "coffee" (brown water) equals 1 Scandinavian cup. Their 4-5 cups is like a tablespoon of regular Scandinavian coffee.
In Alaska there's snow in the winter, mud in the spring, and dirt in the other seasons, of course the footwear comes off. Paved-over regions might be a little different.
I'll explain why in LATAM many people dont take their shoes off. In here we dont have heating on tje floor and in winter is incredibly cold (here where I live in Chile at least) so it would he rude to ask people to remove their shoes. What we dont is to clean tjem outside as best as we can. I personaly use slipers at home, but I wouldnt ask people to remove their shoes.

IKEA furniture is the easiest thing ever to put together, I put together my entire room on my own when I was twelve. It couldn’t be easier even if they made the instructions into a picture book for kids, o no wait they’ve already done that.
Following the instructions is a crucial part of finding it easy or challenging to assemble Ikea furniture. If you’re in a rush, only quickly glance at directions, or just assume that you will psychically divine the purpose of every tiny piece: you’re gonna have a bad time.

Taking off your shoes is normal in Eastern Europe. Two reasons to do this: 1) you don't want dirt all over the floor 2) you give your feet the rest and skin needs to breath. Mediterraneans and Latinos are used to be outside the house all the time, because of the temperate weather, that's why it's uncommon to take your shoes off, you'd just need to put them back on right away. That's my theory as a Mediterranean.

It’s not the British culture to take your shoes off when entering the home but I would say more and more people are doing it. I didn’t grow up in a house where you’re expected to but I definitely think it’s cleaner. However, if someone has a legit reason for keeping them on fair enough, my dad is disabled and his shoes help him walk so I’d never ask him to take his off when entering my home.
This comment section is wild, but I have an honest question. What happens with repair workers? Like electricians or plumbers and construction workers? always found it weird that in other countries, maybe mostly america that it's uncommon to take their shoes off. like do they wear shoes until they go to bed and put shoes back on when they get out of bed? they must need to clean their floors 10 times a day
In hot countries there is far less stuff that can stick to your shoes, such as snow and mud, so a few wipes on the doormat will usually do the trick. Additionally many hot countries have plenty of venomous insects that enjoy crawling into your shoes so keeping them on reduces the risk of that happening. It's a cultural difference resulting from different climates, nothing more.

Both have climates that can best be described as temperate and both have cold winters. Take it from someone who lived in Japan to work as a ski instructor, not exactly a hot weather sport.

When my exchange organisation stressed how important it is in Norway to take off your shoes in the house I assumed they meant like taking off your shoes before you even step through the door because I just couldn't imagine how anyone would actually _wear shoes inside the house_ . @@spacewolfcub idk it's still weird. I have family in Portugal, Angola, Brazil and Cabo Verde and they all take their outside shoes off at the front door and wear flip flops in the house. Walking with outside shoes on inside will get you in trouble. In my experience in those places at least, insects and animals getting inside your shoes is extremely uncommon so I definitely think it's due to wanting to keep the house clean. Idk if this is universal though since some americans that were visiting didn't take their outside shoes off 🤢

Exactly! I'm European latin and all my friends wear shoes inside the houses. Most people tend to have feet odor anyways! I prefer them to leave their shoes on. Nobody uses welcoming mats anymore or what?? They clean the dirt! Just rub the shoes on it a couple of times and it's done. We mostly use marble floors (cold floor) so it's easy to clean and dirt or water don't stick to them. Nordics use more wooden floors and carpets, I think. Which is a nightmare to clean and to preserve. So yeah, they're disguising their lazyness with supposed social rules. We should always be cleaning the floor, wearing shoes or not. So what's the point of taking them anyway?? Just delaying the inevitable... Don't listen to these people man, they have that perfection-aryan-hitler complex thing going on. It's crap. In Alaska there's snow in the winter, mud in the spring, and dirt in the other seasons, of course the footwear comes off. Paved-over regions might be a little different.

In here we dont have heating on tje floor and in winter is incredibly cold (here where I live in Chile at least) so it would he rude to ask people to remove their shoes. What we dont is to clean tjem outside as best as we can.

Taking off your shoes is normal in Eastern Europe. Two reasons to do this: 1) you don't want dirt all over the floor 2) you give your feet the rest and skin needs to breath. Mediterraneans and Latinos are used to be outside the house all the time, because of the temperate weather, that's why it's uncommon to take your shoes off, you'd just need to put them back on right away. That's my theory as a Mediterranean.

I am always taking my shoes off... it happens that people say that I dont need too.... but it is a normal thing to take it off. Also when you are outside you dont have to bring everything into your home. You can also have slippers for your guests.

It’s not the British culture to take your shoes off when entering the home but I would say more and more people are doing it. I didn’t grow up in a house where you’re expected to but I definitely think it’s cleaner. However, if someone has a legit reason for keeping them on fair enough, my dad is disabled and his shoes help him walk so I’d never ask him to take his off when entering my home.
