Thank you! After all these years, I finally found your great videos on flyfishing on RUclips and I am learning quite a lot. Wish that I had looked before on RUclips.
Thanks for the help through your videos and products I've recently ordered. I've been fly fishing and tying off and on since I was 13 (now 65) when my great uncle took me up to Hat Creek and the Fall River in Northern California where he had fished most of his life. After his and my aunt's passing years ago, I inherited their bamboo rods both hand-made by Winston in San Francisco. To say the least, they are a treasure. Thanks to you guys and persistent local shelter-in-place orders, I'm enjoying a rebirth of tying and will be hitting some favorite locations again when possible. There's a lot of junk on RUclips in regards to fly fishing and tying. Didn't take more than three videos for me to subscribe to your channel as your presentations are professional, intelligently and thoroughly presented, and I take away something new with each topic. Keep up the good work. I'm sure I'll be ordering more stuff. And thanks for bringing me back to life!

Thanks, this was a really good explanation of how to rig the various lines for trout. As you know, but some of your less experienced fly fisher viewers may not, there are additional approaches often used for top water fishing for species such as bass, and various approaches used for salt water fishing, such as bone fishing on the flats. I really enjoy your channel and I never cease to learn something useful from your videos.

I have successfully targeted Carp, Pike, Walleye, Perch, Largemouth, and my most favorite of all species, the Smallmouth Bass with the flyrod. I have used floating, sinkng, and intermittent lines. I actually have even used use small crank bait lures used in a " chuck and duck" technique to much success! I learned my craft by attending fishing expos and watching Dave Dalhburg, Lefty Cray, Joe Umphrey, Harry Murphy, Bob Clouser and Leo Pachner tie, cast and present their personal ideas about the art. I then applied their technique and concepts to my river. I fish the Kankakee River in Illinois. It was a world class Smallmouth Bass fishery, now sand from Indiana has wrecked parts of the river. But 50% is still good. I lost my fishing partner 7 years ago to Parkinson's. He and I waded virtually all the wadeable water for many years. It got to where I had to tie the anchor line on his 10 ft Jon boat to my waist and pull him around with me so we could fish togather. He always hated that had to pull him around the river in his boat, but I said "wouldn't you do it for me"? His rely was, "hell yes I would". I said " then get to fishing,"! I lost him just before the next year's season started about 5 months later. I have only in this last 2 months ventured out and fished a few hours since his passing. So much has changed in the last 7 years! I'm scrambling to get back up to speed again. I need to whole heartedly thank you for sharing the information, time, passion and wisdom to help me get back in the water (hardcore year round wader here) I wish I could have had access to your videos years ago! I learned old school, trial and error method. Again thank you for your time, well done video and easy natured way of teaching! I sincerely appreciate it!

Great video. Unless I’m mistaken you said you use sinking lines for most of your streamer fishing but then also referred to a sink tip line. Do you use full sinking line or sink tip most often for streamers ?
ecksdog He said he uses “Kelly Galloup” style sink tips most often but it depends on the water. He also said to give him a call at the shop and he’d be happy to discuss.
Ecksdog, thank you for asking that question as I was also confused as he did say he uses a "sinking line" 99% of the time with streamers and other times he used the term "sink tip". So I also thought he meant a full sinking line was mostly used. A very good guide I fish with in New York does use sinking lines (often 200 grain) all of the time with streamers in fast and high water.
I fish the Kenai river in AK. Id like to hear about bead fishing. strike indicators and appropriate ways to get bead down in the water. Im currently using spit shot a 6mm bead pegged 2 inches above hook with a strike indicator. I don't get consistent results. Am I missing something?
Newbie question here. What size split shot are you using? And/or are you selecting a size based on the flow of the water. Go heavier if you are fishing for trout in flowing water. Lighter if you are fishing for bluegill on a pond or lake.
Hello been watching your videos which are very helpful, I know you say should normally have a 8ft or 9ft while nymp fishing ,I'm new to fly fishing and would like to get into fly fishing I have a 7' 6 4wt that my father left me since he passed can I get away using this fly rod?
When building a streamer rig could I tie a tippet ring to the butt section and extend the rest of the rig from there? What I am thinking of doing is cutting the loop off my sinking line and tying a permanent butt section with a tippet ring on it. I am thinking of a nail knot to connect the end of the fly line to the butt section. I have a section of river nearby that the huge browns congregate under the spillway of a lake dam and I want to throw streamers at them :-)

I am finally starting to get back into fly fishing. It’s been about 13 years since I’ve gone but your videos have helped me understand a lot of issues I’ve ran across. I’m looking to buy my first setup this spring. My question is what’s a good rod weight and action to mainly go for trout but still be able to handle some smaller smallmouth bass? I’ve been looking at a 9’ 5 or 6 weight. What would you recommend?
Hello! I'm gonna buy a #6 setup with 3 sink line for mostly rainbow trout but also Perch. What kind of flies can I use? Have looked at boobys and streamers. But can I use more? Thanks
I'm new to fly fishing and just purchased around a $200 combo TFO rod and real. I have floating line on. But I would like to know is there a quick way to swap your line out with sinking line for streamer fishing? I never did streamer fishing but sounds like it might be better by your knowledge.
Thanks for checking with us. Please send this question over to the shop and they will be happy to help out. admin@madriveroutfitters.com or give them a call.
I have question lets say you use nymph fly fishing for like 1-3 hours and then you see the fish begin to eat from surface. 1. Do i need to cut the line and change it to float line for dry fishing or can stay the same line but just change it from nymph to Dry hook(bait)?

What’s is the best color dry fly? And what is the difference between 5/6wt reel and a 6wt reel?
Chris Awesome Thanks for being here and as Brian says in the videos, send your questions to him at admin@madriveroutfitters.com.
For nymphing, what are your thoughts on “sink-it” versus using split shot. Is it any good?
Not familiar with that. We'll stick with split-shot.
Nymphs dries and streamers all good what about beads? I’m in AK and looking forward to beads on Kenai and parks hwy in fall😎
Nymphs and streamers can have bead heads. Doesn't really quality them as a category of their own.
Mad River Outfitters pegging beads to imitate salmon eggs, I know u hav heard of this. Guys hav entire bead boxes and secret nail polish to paint their beads
If nothing else I hope I run into Rogue at the shop!
You will! He works every day.
A short video, but it sounds like with all the variations described in the leaders you have enough material for a book. Maybe call it “End Of The Line”. ...just a thought!
That's a great idea! We'll talk to Brian about it.
Question do u have to use a indicator for nymphing
Cyrux No rules.....you do not.
Mad River Outfitters thanks
HA HA HA HAAAAA I was listening to a Spanish lesson before this and I was playing it at .75% of normal speed ..... You sound EXACTLY like Bill Clinton at .75% !! You gotta try it!!! HA HA HAAA
He's heard that a few times. Thanks for being here. Better at full speed though.
I’ve just started fly fishing I’m still confused on how long my fly line should be attached to my leader. I’m fishing for mostly native trout in a small creek. Help would be appreciated!

Brian: What is the brand and model of fly line that you use in so many of your videos that is orange?
He said it's the Cortland Hi-Vis Flip line- www.madriveroutfitters.com/p-14733-cortland-hi-vis-flip-pallot-fly-line.aspx
what size tippet should I use for steelhead
Lewis Hofmann Has nothing to do with the fish really. Watch this: ruclips.net/video/AtXPJszdW9s/видео.html
Ok i Will wait. Just inform me when it is out
You'll get a notification when it is.
Would you recommend using nymphs on a lake?
Bluegill20 If the lake has nymphs, which it surely does.
Why are wet fly rigs always skipped over? They aren’t the same as nymph, dry, or streamer rigs, are they?
For the most part, they fit into the Nymph technique/leader category. He does have a few videos specifically on wet flies though...so not always.
I’m new to fly fishing too just started 6 months ago maybe I have a bunch of qestions
Feel free to reach out to the shop! That's what they do for a living.....help folks with fly fishing.
