  • Common, who wrote a song for "Burning Sands," joined writer/director Gerard McMurray and stars Trevor Jackson and Alfre Woodard at the Variety Studio presented by Orville Redenbacher’s at the Sundance Film Festival to talk about the Netflix movie which centers on pledge hazing at an all-black college fraternity.

I thought that at the end of the movie Zurich finally called his dad because he realized that his dad was trying to warn his son of the dangers of hell week. Hell week is probably scheduled at the same time each year and Zurich's father was also interested in pledging the same Lamda whatever whatever fraternity during his time in school. However, Zurich's father did not go through with the process due to his disapproval of the unjust torture and hazing going on. It can also be implied that Zurich's father witnessed the murder of a young man on his potential line back when he was in school and was calling Zurich to warn him not to pledge the same fraternity or not to get caught up in the hype or madness, and never to forget where he comes from. That he is of King and Queen stature and that he doesn't need a fraternity to degrade him and beat him like a slave to possess what he desires in life, because the courage and ability required to do so already exists within him. I could keep going on and on about this, but if yall understand even half of what I said, PLEASE THUMBS UP THIS COMMENT SO THAT OTHERS MAY READ, RESPOND, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY THINK ABOUT WHAT THE MOVIE REALLY IS ABOUT!
Sorry I left one more thing out... What if the Dean of the school was on the line with Zurich's father when a fellow line member was killed. Zurich's father did the right thing by standing up to the fraternity, backing down from the line, and realizing that his "brother" just died for absolutely nothing! & Obviously the Dean of the school still went through with the initiation process and became a "Lamda etc etc". But here's the kicker, Zurich's father wanted to warn Zurich about the fraternity, and the Dean specifically "nominated" Zurich for the fraternity, knowing of his father's history and wants to get back at Zurich's dad for leaving the frat and breaking the tradition. So he does everything he can to get into Zurich's head and bring him into the frat, not allowing him to back down and do the right thing like his father! What yall think? I'm open to comments lol

I like the movie. It was hard to watch at times. You don't have to agree with the movie but understand it does happen. I went to school with a girl who died on campus from hazing. so it's very real.

Yep I agree. Hazing happens all over the world at universities. I found certain scenes difficult to watch. The beatings and the way the big brothers treating women like sex objects. As a guy this goes way beyond my morals. If I were in their footsteps I would have stand up and quit. I rather quit than being treated like a slave. Unfortunately hazing crosses all races and genders so no fraternity or sorority is holy. The water drinking scene happens a lot of time. Heard once some student drunk 6 liters of water and died.

exactly a lot of people, especially, black greeks are offended bc it makes them look bad and i’m like if you don’t haze then it doesn’t apply to you. they don’t wanna admit that it does happen and that the story was very real and modern.

I really liked how Alfre Woodard said that the movie shows the different type of black men that exist in the world.

I've seen a lot of people, mainly frat members attacking this movie. Mostly because it centers around hazing. And I think the attacks are unwarranted. Just like Gerard McMurray said, it holds up a mirror. And I think that probably makes a lot of people who question why they chose to be subjected to whatever horrible stuff they may have been subjected to during the pledging process.
But how do we ever expect to end the practice of hazing it's not exposed? That's the problem right there. Nobody ever wants to talk about it openly and honestly. There's nothing wrong with being a member of a fraternity (sorority) but nobody should have to be subjected to physical or sexual assault or any other type of abuse just to be considered a member of a Brotherhood or Sisterhood.
There have to be other ways, nonviolent, non-terroristic ways to initiate people into a fraternity or sorority.
And for all of the people who have cognitive dissonance about this; and would rather pretend that hazing isn't a major problem, you are part of the problem.

I just viewed this movie. It was disturbingly great to me. So many themes explored here from toxic masculinity and fear to sexual violence against women and friendships. Our community needs God and some serious healing.

I was totally disgusted throughout this movie. What does this have to do with honor, faithfulness, or loyalty? I dont give a fuck. They can have all of that. I will never subject myself to a broken body, mind or spirit to be apart of a group.

I had a cousin who pledged and she couldnt find out why she stopped hanging out with me. She literally disowned me. She changed her whole personality and acts stuck up. This is why i hate sorrorities. I didnt pledge and never will. They make you do stuff that is not even required to put your life on the line!!

Myra de la Fuente belonging is a basic human desire. The real question is why the hell people in these organizations are such sadists and fight to see torture like this continue when it isn’t preparing pledges to do the work they would be assigned as a member - which is mostly paperwork and planning?

Ric Gordon from what I picked up, because it's underground hazing you'll never which fraternity/sorority on either campus haze. A sorority I wanted to pledge was band for 8 years from the college campus (I was in hopes of attending) for hazing. S each campus and each of those leaders are different.
