Hi Dhruv, what a great explanation, Thank you! Only one correction - the scrubber was not there to combust the vent gas but only to neutralise the poisonous vent gas. That was a wet scrubber and normally it contains water. So when the vent gas passes through it, it will be neutralised before it is sent further to flare. Flare is used to combust the waste gas and also consider as the last step of safety. However that day the scrubber and the flare itself, both were under service for few weeks. The poisonous gas did went through scrubber but the scrubber was not designed for such a large flow and therefore it didn’t help. After the scrubber, the gas moved to flare but it was under repair so they could not ignite the flare to combust. That is when the workers decided to shower the flare tower with water hoses to neutralize the gas. Unfortunately, the water pressure was too low and could not reach the flare tip.

I remember I was a supervisor in a company few months before. There I witnessed a horrific incident. The company makes plastic stabilizer so you can call it a chemical plant. So one day I was with my staff and we were walking downstairs to discuss something after checking the reaction in our reactor, one labour crossed us in front of us while walking downstairs. We thought it to be normal. When we were down and discussing, we heard a loud screaming of a boy. We initially ignored that because the guys were mainly of young age and illiterate so we thought that to be obvious for them to do such thing. But that Boy screamed and came running downwards. We noticed that his legs were burnt and he was literally crying like hell because his pain was excruciating. He probably jumped into the pallet where our product was allowed to cool down after reaction to make it fragile. So that it can be broken. He burnt his legs you know what was more outrageous ? No one from other staff came to see him except we supervisors. None of us knew it was his first day in factory. The product after completion is normally 150°C hot. After that day, we had to be very careful. And if any new labour comes. We explain them the precautions and they were not allowed to roam alone in plant without any supervisor. I later left that company because my body started complaining. I'd coughing issues, It made me feel that there is something sweet that is STUCK in my neck. I'm just 21. My all other staff members had major injuries like skin burn, baldness, coughing issues. And they all said to me we can't tell u more as you are new. But what I had witnessed is there are no precautions followed. Because of which I resigned just after working 1 month.
As a chemical engineer we deeply studied this disaster, Safety measures were poor and working force was weak. The product Sevin can be produced by 2 methods in which one has MIC route and other one is Non MIC route, latter process is safe to execute. Also phosgene was stored in atmospheric tank in open. Even though the new safety rules have been instructed, still many industries are emitting hazardous fluids in the atmosphere to ignore the dilluting and scrubbing costs and air quality is being highly affected. CPCB(Centre pollution control board) needs to fix this issues for better environment and human safety. Flixborough , Pasadena TX, Chernobyl nuclear disaster etc., are some vital industrial disasters in the world. In this case compromised safety system without any safety interlock was the major problem of the leakage.
@@ujjwalsharma9185 it is necessary, because on Diwali and Christmas celebrations, people speak of banning the fireworks which actually occupies around 2-8% in total pollution scale. Fireworks do create the pollution but major fraction of the total pollution comes from the Industries , which is being very lessly talked about unless it is affecting any historical monuments. So until the govt. attends this issue, only thing we can do is to expand green evolution and spread as less pollution as we can.
This is a perfect example how technology can be boom and also curse if not handled properly.i feel immense pain for the innocent people who suffered this disaster.
This 22 minuter video of your was genuienly so much more interesting and cinematic as compared to many suspense web series on OTT. Loved the explanation style with accurate background music Dhruv, keep it up !

I'm from Bhopal, and i would say it still haunts the peoples of Bhopal. Hamidia hospital played an extremely crucial role in evacuating and treating the sufferers.
This is one of the most informative and fascinating video of yours, Did our government give any financial or social support to victims like the japan case?
They did but it was an extremely small amount for the amount the victims suffered. Survivors received 500 USD and families of those who died received 2000 USD. 500 USD which is around 35,000 rupees barely covers the medical expenses of the survivors.
@@thepratik91 Yup, definitely higher. Official government records say around 3k victims, but reports from human rights campaigners and samitis say around 25k dead and another 5,50,000 injured and disabled. Which is just insane, this entire incident was so political. It's really sad that all these people weren't given any justice :(
The govt is so insensitive (and this is for all political parties mp has had) during the second wave they tried to convert the only hospital dedicated to and specializing in Bhopal Gas Tragedy patients into Covid ward. Like why?
My grandfather worked in Union Carbide, and told me that it was midnight, and he woke up from his sleep, coughing. He immediately realised that a poisonous gas was leaking from the factory, so he woke up everyone and used their scooter to flee from Bhopal. They drove in the opposite direction from the factory, whereas many others rushed towards the railway station which was really close to the factory, but the station master stopped all the trains from entering Bhopal and saved countless lives. He also called for medical help. My mother was 2 years old at that time. Then I asked about the reason of the tragedy, he told that water started leaking in one of the chambers which caused a chemical reaction.
I'm from Bhopal and I feel this is the disastrous tragedy that happened to our people for which they must get justice. and also I really appreciate your and your team's efforts in doing research on it and explaining it in lemon terms.
This was one of the most painful case to be learnt in our Environmental law class, it was also contested in courts outside India. Indian government failed and settled this case with UCC which was much lesser compensation then contested.

✌️✌️
Thnx for information
@@ujjwalsharma9185 it is necessary, because on Diwali and Christmas celebrations, people speak of banning the fireworks which actually occupies around 2-8% in total pollution scale. Fireworks do create the pollution but major fraction of the total pollution comes from the Industries , which is being very lessly talked about unless it is affecting any historical monuments. So until the govt. attends this issue, only thing we can do is to expand green evolution and spread as less pollution as we can.

I'm from Bhopal, and i would say it still haunts the peoples of Bhopal. Hamidia hospital played an extremely crucial role in evacuating and treating the sufferers.
This is one of the most informative and fascinating video of yours,
Did our government give any financial or social support to victims like the japan case?
They did but it was an extremely small amount for the amount the victims suffered. Survivors received 500 USD and families of those who died received 2000 USD. 500 USD which is around 35,000 rupees barely covers the medical expenses of the survivors.
@@chakshuniranjan1253 We should also consider no.of victims and the time too,35000 then maybe higher now
@@thepratik91 Yup, definitely higher.
Like why?
I live in bhopal and still can't believe that such a dangerous disaster happened in this BEAUTIFUL capital
I got goosebumps just by reading your comment!
Nice. Thanks for explaining this whole tragedy at simplify manner.
I'm from Bhopal and I feel this is the disastrous tragedy that happened to our people for which they must get justice.
and also I really appreciate your and your team's efforts in doing research on it and explaining it in lemon terms.
