Plant a grove of foreign fruit trees (the ones that you didn't get when you started out). Each foreign fruit is worth 500 bells each. With a grove of 10 trees, that's 15,000 bells every three days. If you have a friend whose island has a different fruit than yours, then you can pick your native fruit and sell them on your friend's island for 500 bells each. Do NOT craft with foreign fruit. This will actually LOWER the amount of bells when you sell to the Nooks.
Another way to make a LOT of bells, if you are patient at the beginning, is to breed gold or blue roses. Plucked gold or blue roses are worth 1000 bells each. If you craft these roses into wreaths or crowns, you double your bells. A Blue rose wreath takes 10 blue roses to craft. For just the flowers, the Nook's will pay 10,000 bells, for a wreath, they'll pay 20,000. On my island I kept breeding them until I had a large patch of 60 Blue Rose plants. The flowers grow back two days after you pick them, so with one harvest I can make 120,000 bells, and every week I can do 3-4 harvests.
These methods require some work to start with, but once they are established, will provide a steady stream of bells with little to no effort. And they are WAY less work and more reliable than turnips.
