Video 387 of my video posting project. I have been working on this project since November 2023--learning and posting a video of new piano music (almost) every day! (I'm counting videos instead of days now!)
Today's video is "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" by Hugh Martin & Ralph Blaine. This jazz version was arranged by Brent Edstrom and can be found in the collection "Jazz Piano Solos: Christmas Songs".
I love the back story on this Christmas Piece. It was written for the movie "Meet Me In St. Louis" and Judy Garland famously sang it in the movie. It was originally a really sad song (Judy Garland sings it to her little sister about having to leave their family home because of financial troubles just before Christmas). Apparently, Judy Garland was worried about making her little sister cry, and wanted something more upbeat and hopeful. They re-wrote the song and it became a hit.
I still think it has an undertone of sadness--I like that this arrangement is kind of quiet and thoughtful. I always like to see what other arrangers come up with--I wrote a different version of this a few years ago. If you'd like to compare, you can see it here:

Right in time for the holiday feels ❤
Yes! I am happy to play holiday music! My favourite time of the year.
It's always a pleasure to listen to your music.
Why, thank you!! It's always a pleasure to hear kind comments like yours!
This works even in a very slow tempo, languid and sentimental. A friend with a monthly newsletter for the last 45 years wrote today that Judy Garland refused to sing some of the lyrics of the song; they were about warriors not returning home from the war; she could not abide that. They accomodated her, of course. Really gushy and sentimental piece. You aced it again.
Yes! The writers had to go back to the "drawing board" and re-write the lyrics because Judy Garland said she didn't want to make Margaret O'Brien (her little sister in the movie) cry! She is the one that asked that they make the music more uplifting!!
