The reason I think this band is still together..
1.) Robert and Kirk are incredible musicians w/o huge personalities/egos
2.) Hetfield seems comfortable in his own skin and doesn't need to prove anything
3.) Everyone respects each other and the role they play in the band
They also genuinely get along. Lars and James have had their fights, but they've said many times that they truly love each other and care for one another. With many bands however, they either can't stand each other or they're nothing more than coworkers, while Metallica are family. Kirk and Rob also have a close friendship and they hang out a lot because of their similar interests.

We use to draw metallica and acdc logo all over the school bench in mid 90's with compass tip. headmaster was not impressed. but we perfected the art. good old times.

I believe James has said he worked at a printing company before Metallica, so no surprise he had access to draw something that required symmetry and mass duplication. James is responsible for a lot of the artistry in the band. The scary guy logo, the ninja star. I think the only iconic Metallica logo James ins't responsible for would be the "splatter" logo, which was designed by Pushead.
It wasn't a printing company, it was specifically a sticker factory.

These guys are not human. Their 1 in a million, literally. James is so talented, funny, easy going, happy.......You couldn't dream up a story more perfect than them. They're lucky to still be alive. All the alcohol, on the road touring for YEARS, lack of sleep, poor nutrition in the early days. And they can still hear at their age? Truly Blessed. Amazing!
Goes to show James is a true artist. They don't let others mess with their drawings/Sketches. It's the artists vision.
