  • Treatment of complex valvular heart disease has changed dramatically over the last decade, illustrated by both advances in open-heart surgery and the advent of minimally invasive approaches. In this Grand Rounds, we will hear from a cardiac surgeon, interventional cardiologist, and non-invasive cardiologist about their multidisciplinary approach to complex valvular disease. We’ll also learn about current guidelines for the management of mitral, aortic, and tricuspid valvular disease.
    Speakers
Tobias Deuse, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon, is director of minimally invasive cardiac surgery at UCSF. He is well known for developing minimally invasive techniques for mitral valve repair, as well as innovative approaches to heart failure surgery (most notably minimally invasive techniques for implanting ventricular assist systems and mitral valve repair utilizing fully robot-assisted endoscopic surgery). Deuse’s honors include election to the board of directors of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation.
Sammy Elmariah, MD, MPH, is an interventional cardiologist specializing in caring for patients with valve disease, coronary artery disease, and adult congenital heart disease. He is a leader in transcatheter heart valve procedures, including transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), edge-to-edge mitral valve repair (MitraClip and TEER), mitral valve replacement (TMVR), and new approaches for tricuspid valve disease. His research focuses on the prediction and optimization of clinical outcomes of patients with aortic stenosis and after TAVR.
Kirsten Tolstrup, MD, is a non-invasive cardiologist with a special interest in echocardiography, valvular disease, and structural heart disease. She works closely with the interventional team on transcatheter-based procedures such as TAVR and MitraClip and on optimizing our multidisciplinary team approach to cardiovascular care at UCSF.
