Hey Phil that had me shouting at the screen then never stand over the spring if it slips it will take your head clean off. We call them spring clamps widow makers stay safe

Obviously never seen a spring take off across a workshop, must have been a milkman before starting to fix cars
Phil, as has been mentioned, never stand above the spring like you did. Also you way over tightened the spring, you are lucky yo did not snap it. Put the compressors on and slowly, slowly tighten equally on both side; not like you did.. The aim is to take up the load of the spring, not to compress it to much. Cheers

Phil, I recommend that you get a movable workbench, so then you reduce the number of times you have to bend down.
Ive seen someones jaw almost ripped off by one of those springs..Do not stand over one ever. Always point it towards your neighbours house.

Little tip Phil , when working on front suspension , jack both sides up then you are not fighting with the anti roll bar pushing up on the shocker , that's why it didn't move when top mount undone, always be careful doing spring compressions , clamps can and do jump round , very dangerous nowadays , I have 3 different special clamping stations for suspension legs and it is still scarey, dont stand over top of strut when loosening top nut ,I always put a strap around the spring when in stand , if it slips out it only jumps a out 4 inches , not all over workshop , taking windows out and breaking fingers or worse , next purchase please axle stands, I know you use wheels under car , but safety first , great repair , dont we love droplinks , I did discs and pads x 4 on a 2015 civic 2.2 diesel today , took longer to get the 8 disc retaining screws out than all the rest of the job , had to warm up with plumbers torch , yellow map gas and got out my 35 yr old impact driver with a screwdriver adapter on and many taps later came undone , nicely greased , and back on car with new shiny discs and pads
DeWalt tools are well rated and should save you a lot of time and effort. Would agree with the comments about caution when working on suspension struts and getting some axle stands - I always use them every time I have to raise my car to do a job and I only do a fraction of the work you do!
Your a very lucky man today .... cheap spring compressor with a powerful impact gun and doing it in line of sight
You need some investment in tooling .... better trolley jack and some quality axle stands with peg bolts in not self locking as lost a mechanic friend with those as he kicked them off by mistake and never realised
Need to fabricate a workbench and a decent vice
I have a floor mounted spring compressor and a set of quality spring compressor that is designed to be operated with an impact wrench worth every penny easier and safer
That cheap jack collapses and scratches that wheel ... more expense that could be avoided
Even if you jack it up and block it on quality blocks ( I have new railway sleepers to get cars high and even use scaffy board home made step ramps to get low floor cars higher so I can get my old Snap on jack underneath

Aside from the spring compressor comments that people have said. It would be great to see axle stands under the car, along with the trolley jack and tyre. Even when you aren't fully under the car a trolley jack giving could result in a serious injury. People will look to your video for inspiration. It would be great to see you demonstrate and comment on how to approach these jobs in the safest way.
Also wondering if you put seam seal back on with the wing??

Good content as always Phil. I agree with the suggestion on a movable workbench it would save a lot of bending plus your not tripping over stuff on the floor. The impact wrenches are a game changer, I got the Makita one because I have batterys for other tools, not sure on the power on it but it's never failed to undo anything. Well done on the new subscribers.

Another great job phil and tip if can but if struggle with drop links use a bar to apply pressure on anti roll bar if you pull lever up it will nip and stop joint from spinning.

Man you are so lucky. I broke my hand on a golfs rear spring and it didn’t even come out of the seating but slipped off my trolley jack I was using to compress the spring.
Good video Phil, but grab one of those floor mounted spring compressors with the securing chains. You can put the whole leg in. Far safer. I got mine second hand for £50. Well worth it.

Tip for anyone, If you hear a knock or clunk when you fully turn the steering wheel , tighten the steering rack mounts bolts to Max ,trust me it works ,another tip , when clamping coil springs at home , link/ tie some wire to the coils on levels as extra security

Liking the impact wrench, I've got a draper and it just doesn't quite have the power for some jobs so thinking of upgrading to one of those or the milwaukee.

Like everyone else it scared me watching you with those spring compressors. You are very trusting of that little hydraulic jack on it's own, you've moved up a level with your new workshop so maybe time to move up a level with the equipment and practices too? I know the nut was fairly loose but using chrome vanadium sockets with an impact driver...please be more careful mate, you've a lot of people who watch you and probably copy you, you should be setting a good example. Good fix on the Mito, always liked the look of these, Alfa have always made good looking cars.

When using those spring compressors always point them away from yourself just in case they let go I was cringing when I watched you tighten them try to tighten both equally be very careful good luck.
Phil, don't do the droplinks up with the impact it ends up wrecking them learnt my lesson after a couple of times

Get yourself over to the machinery auction sites (apex, cott&co) and treat yourself to some metal top benches. Cheap as chips.
get yourself pair of small mole grips and put them behind and your be able to tighten the drop link up .

I did top mounts on my Ford Focus not long ago, the spring pressure makes it just about impossible to rotate by hand, 🚗🚗

Phil been with you for along time bud but your working practices aren’t showing the more professional image you wanted before you moved into the new unit. Putting the wheel underneath the lower wishbone isn’t going to stop the car squashing you. Use an axle stand and as for standing over the top of the compressed widow makers then sorry mate but you’ll be stood in Yorkshire and your gonads will be in Northumberland!,,

The Milwaukee M18 Fuel is the most powerful 1/2" battery impact gun, with 1400ft/Ib of torque. Awesome impact guns.
Also if you compress the springs on the car, you can usually get your hand in the top to change the topmounts without removing the whole strut.
What has happened to the old Jag that was in the corner?
I'm not even a car guy but when I see somebody using spring clamps it always makes me cringe and expect the worse.
What about the Astra?
Are you happy with cross climate tyres on the front axle, and summer on the rear ? I researched this online before getting my first cross climate tyres,and some so called experts reckon you have to put cross climate on all 4, otherwise handling could be dodgy ? 🤔

Omg! I couldn’t watch please please please never stand over a compressed spring like that again it was scary to watch. Always treat them like a bomb waiting to go off, unless you have a caged spring compressor and only big garages and dealerships tend to have them. Other than that I’m new to the channel and I’d like to see you stay safe and post more content. 👍🏻
Personally I don’t like using impact tools as most often I torque bolts and nuts to factory specs, especially wheel lug nuts or lug bolts.

All this crawling on the floor is going to bugger up your knees... how do I know that😏 I also have them clamps but they are scary as fook. I got a bench vise and mounted it to a chair so I can move it wherever you need it, handy for holding struts etc when you need it.
Did you kill it with yor new impact ??????

Plastic too metal body colours will always be different for some reason.
The worst I've seen is on vauxhall again for some reason.
It's because plastic parts are sprayed using conventional spray guns and metal panels are painted using rotational fan spraying by robots in the factory , bumpers meet the car on the production line already painted in a different spraying shop ready to fit
It’s sodding council speed humps wrecking everyones’s suspension prematurely... drop links top mounts control arms springs all getting unnecessary stress
front fog lights don't come into the mot.
I think as of 2018 they get checked on MOT plus Day time running light. The car can fail if they are not working.
Allegedly can't mix summer and all season/winter tyres. Grip at front, back end forget it. You need 2 more.
The wings will look darker than compared to the bumper. I had a Mito in this colour and you could see a difference. Even my Brera V6 is the same with the red paint.
You need a decent vice, instead of wrestling with the tensioned strut on the floor or a ramp, also not good practice to stand over spring when compressing. As Stallone says “keep your arms and legs in the vehicle at all times “

I was almost sick watching you change that top mount. Please never do it like that again if that had of gone it would of gone right through you and probably the roof also. Not having a go but I have seen the damage that can be done when it goes wrong

that is a dewalt dcf899, it has a Breakaway Torque of 1625 Nm
