  • Welcome to my video build of Eduard's Westland Lysander.
This is a re-box of the Gavia kit from 2001, this boxing was issued around 2011. It does look very early Eduard, so you make up your own mind if Eduard was behind this all along.
No real vices but care has to be taken as its showing its age somewhat. Its currently the only 1/48 scale kit of this really important and unusual aeroplane.

Wow! For an 'older' kit, that looks pretty magnificent..!! 👍
I fell in love with the Lysander when I built the original Matchbox kit in the very early 1970s as a youngster; sadly non of the 'big' players have had any available for years, and I didn't know about this Eduard kit either......going to have to have scout around online and see if I can find one...must be 50 years since I last built one; it's about time I rectified that!! 😂

They can be quite expensive nowadays but yeah, pick one up Steve 👍

The 'winglets' on the wheel spats usually carried a bomb rack for 4 x 25lb 'Cooper' bombs. 161sqdn was a special duties squadron and along with 53sqdn was used for dropping and picking up agents and resistance operatives from occupied France - hence no bomb racks or Vickers 'K' gun.

Thank you Rollei for clearing that up. The instructions did say not to add the Vickers but that area seemed so bland, so I added it.
      Cheers for the feedback 👍

Hi matey. Holy thread resurrection etc😂.
I have the original gavia kit with a shit ton of "correction" and "PE" parts to help. Someone mentioned the SD version not carrying a rear gun but by all accounts it went further than that Tim. The rear was pretty much gutted with a bench seat you could lift to stow kit, and a ply floor. The radio was moved as well but so little info is about and less still images of the Tempsford aircraft. This work was local mods so as likely differed anyway. Another thing people jump up and down about is the Lysander's automatic slat and flap arrangement that deploys automatically below certain air speeds. Useful if you know about it, less so if you can't get the bloody thing to land😬. Apparently they had their own technique. Working with its contemporary of sorts, the DH Beaver, it's interesting to note just how heavy the Lizzie was...blimey. The point about the slats is that invariably they are always deployed on the ground and look a sod to model, but, it is not uncommon for crews to simply push the things back in and I have seen them on the deck with them in so.... the wings mounts look a sod and I have noted the strut position holes need moving. With all that fuel behind you....hells bells. This said the Bell 47 probably would get into service these days with 48 gal of AVGAS hovering above a red hot turbocharger. A belting job of a controversial but much loved type. Nice one....in arrears😂

Well… that’s the longest reply I’ve ever had 😂 Yeah, I’m no expert on the Lizzie and especially not on in-the-field changes to the interior. Those slats…? She was an odd aeroplane definitely. Thanks Flingwing 👍👍

Sadly they were envisaged as an Army cooperation aircraft and got decimated with the BEF. The RAF then formed a cooperation group with them in order to stop the formation of the AOP squadrons. Alanbrooke's intervention thankfully prevented that and the solidier first ethos that has proven itself within Army aviation exists to this day. The Lizzie was doomed as an AOP but excelled in the shady world of the SOE etc. Do what you do well. Be lucky chap.

I used Ultimate decal solutions on the Lysander, I normally have Micro Set & Sol, just fancied trying them out. Works quite well.

Thank you Robbo. I say the kit is a little older, which I guess it is now (20 yrs!) but modern kits are so far ahead these days. It’s fine really.

@@TimsScaleModelling mine was a good attempt at the time, but looked crude given how I build models now. I’ve stripped it down to more or less it’s component parts with the intention of a full rebuild, but it’s a really big task. It would definitely be easier to start with a new kit, but as you say the cost is high. Maybe Revell will Redbox it one day?

I had similar problems with the Dora Wings 1/72 Lysander. The cockpit framing was a nightmare and the glazing was real trouble. I guess it’s a tricky aircraft to convert to a model.
