what a masterpiece, i love how this turned into so much more than just another climbing video. everyone involved in this entire project has every right to be very proud of themselves!
I love this edit so much. Brining such a positive change to a community through adventure, passion, and climbing. Beautiful music, island, people, and sentiment :)
Congratulations on this wonderful movie and on the wonderful project. This is a great alternative for the future of many poor communities in nature paradises.
This is amazing! What a great example of positive impact and transformation of a community through sustainable adventure tourism!! I’m literally in love with this film... congrats this is epic!!!
were titanium glue in bolts used? Doesn't look like it...beautiful spot though, and should help with tourism, but if they're not titanium, it's going to be dangerous in time as the stainless corrodes.
@@NateFanning yeah the limestone and salt in the air eat those things up. The only bolts that work on oceanside limestone are titanium glue-ins (unless you want to replace your expansion bolts every two years!)
Xavier Rojas interesting.. maybe they tried to use glue ins permanently and expansion bolts temporarily to rig..? Looks like a sick place to climb though!
Well, if they don't want to continue living as they do now, they are presented with two alternatives to get back to the level of economic activity that has gone with the mine : tourism, and Nauru level of phosphate mining. The second one would most likely sterilize the island, the first will not happen on their own terms, as the mine company left will all the ressources they would need to develop the necessary infrastructures on their own. The eco part in eco-tourism is really hard to truly come by.
The thumbnail should be a drone video of the rocks that formed because of the mining action. It is an amazing structure. Nature regained the prevalence over the abandoned mines...
Unfortunately a place like this doesn’t have the infrastructure for mass tourism. I see this as a sort of neocolonial tourism. Of course it is lovely there, but what will happen when all the tourists arrive. The garbage will be a problem. Also, I am assuming of course, but I imagine most things are imported. Great initiative, but PETZL and ARCTERYX hopefully have a long term investment in the infrastructure to help make this sustainable and not just a fad. Best of luck Makatea!!
Hi Jason, this is exactly all the work we did, to imagine with all the village how many tourists could come at once with the ressources they have on the island, we went through garbage, food, transport, lodging, walking on the shore.... There can't be mass tourists there as there is no frequent boat passing by and no airport.
Nice picture! But I think everyone who have climbed at least once in Thailand knows that expansion bolts in limestone in such climate get rusty in a half year.
@@agentsmith8799 It's not expansion bolts, but it seems they were used only for belay stations. When they climb you can see only expansion bolts. It's all kind of 'disposable climbing', in Thailand most of routes have been rebolted 3-4 times already.
@@alx1984 Hi Alex, we used titanuim for anchors and HCR bolt for marine and tropique condition. Plus Makatea escalade, the association on the island is checking all this frequently.
@@erwanlelann9895 Is there data available comparing the HCR bolts vs titanium glue in bolts in this kind of tropical environment / conditions? In the end Makatea will be in some years :)
@@TheToxicdieter Not really but it seems that Titanium is the best anyway and the price is really high too. So we limited the number of routes we could bolt to bolt only with the good material we could have. Hcr seems to work well so fare but it s too early to be sure
Talk about "eco-tourism" when we know all the tourists will want to come at Makatea, have to use airplane from very long distance... Sorry, I have a doubt.
@Erwan it's great to read in the comments of the video that this beautiful area is meant primarly for Polynesian. But honestly this is far from obvious when watching the movie. And you obviously know that most viewers are from Europe and America. How many of them will want to go climb there now?
it's a nice climbing movie, but I was a bit bothered by all the greenwashing around the so-called "sustainable tourism" it's supposed to create. This movie will generate new desires (/needs?) for American and European climbers to go climbing in the middle of the Pacific. How sustainable could that be?

Also besser gar nichts machen und keine Perspektive geben ?! Was das Reisen angeht.

Humans must leave their mark and alter everything for our own pleasure. The bolting of ancient and pristine rock in an island paradise is in my opinion, a shame. Why can't you promote trad and respect of the rock?
well two things: 1. They're trying to make this place have a more climbing/adventure centric tourist focus. It's already a massive barrier to entry to get there, in addition to the fact that you can only get there and back with a two-week ferry! If you also made it only trad, not only is it adding to the barrier of entry by making climbers haul multiple trad racks out there, but the number of committed trad climbers is probably ~100x fewer than there are sport climbers, effectively making this entire effort completely pointless, and: 2. there's a reason why trad doesn't happen on oceanside limestone; it's some brittle stuff. Have fun blowing some gear, taking a grounder, and waiting for the two week ferry to take you to the hospital...
I don't understand the problem people have with bolts, it doesn't change much to the rock and they're practically invisible. And if you're talking about the cleaning process of opening routes by making everything that could fall to so, trad is not that different...
Petzl always kill it with these cultural/ climbing edits. Great music in every one too.

Simply beautiful. I just hope men will not destroy everything like they always do.
Spoiler alert: we will
man has been on this island for centuries, i think a better statement is 'i just hope westerners don't destroy everything like they always do'
the idea is not organizing a mass tourism. Only people that live around the islands, and sailing boats that pass by
@@GuillaumeBroust those people don’t climb or do adventure sports in general. Or not enough to restore the economy of the island, sadly
