Apologies in advance for not-the-best sound in this video. Working in the kitchen with the whole family at home, is not condusive to clean audio.
The WSG is a great little DIY kit, designed by Ray Wilson. If you're not familiar with his work, head over to: musicfromouters... and learn all!

The best material to make the front panel out of is some 1.6mm sheet aluminium, adding a ground-wire to one of the pot's metal shield helps to reduce spurious cross-talk between the two oscillators, I found that out the hard way when using a scope to de-bug my WSG build, one of the oscillators wasn't oscillating properly like it was supposed to, turned-out the cause was due to stray capacitor coupling between some copper tracks of the Veroboard I used to build the circuit on, all I had to do was remove some excess coper track from the underside and that fixed it.
Good job! 😅👍 Ray Wilson is a legend and is sorely missed.
Thanks! Agreed.
Ray’s products/projects were amongst the first things I came across when I started to get into synths.
If I’d plucked up the courage to wield a soldering iron sooner, my studio could’ve looked very different!
If you really want to make it sound even more weird and Psychedelic, try running it through a delay effect pedal, and, or, a reverb effect pedal, you can get some really spaced-out sounds that way.
Excellent Demo.
10:50 reminds me of the beginning of Rush's 2112 for some reason.
Good job!
Love It! Thanks for this video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
awesome build! Did you have much experience before doing this project?
Thanks for your comment!
Prior to this I had almost no DIY electronics experience at all.
I had made up a couple of cables bad that’s about it.
@@ScottAmpleford awesome that's good to hear! I'm thinking about this box as my first build so super excited
Its so awesome! You inspire me
Thanks! Lovely comment :)
thanks!
Is there anyway to modify this and add an audio input so I can plug a guitar signal into it?
thomas666 Hmm, I don’t know. Best check out the MFOS website where Ray added a ton of info about the device, including modifications.
There are also guitar projects from MFOS.
I recently got this kit from a local makerspace- I'm wondering is the information about the LED mods available somewhere? It would be nice to be able to tell how fast things are oscillating.
It's got a very Radiophonic Workshop feel to it! :D
All of Ray Wilson’s info is still up on the MFOS website. Here’s the mods page: musicfromouterspace.com/index.php?CATPARTNO=&PROJARG=WSG2010%2Fwsg_page9.html&MAINTAB=SYNTHDIY&SONGID=NONE&PLAYONLOAD=FALSE&VPW=&VPH=&CATMOBISTATUS=&SYNTHDIYSTATUS=CONTENT&SEARCHTERM=
@@ScottAmpleford thank you! I love the Dr Who and the Daleka poster as well. :D
@@colonelbarker You’re most welcome! Oh yeah, I’m a massive whovian :)
@@ScottAmpleford haha. Fantastic. It's hard to hide. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. It should be a fun project to finish off
