Why are we making sand burrowing turtle bots instead of sand burrowing sand mole bits? Wait wait is that also a thing? The turtles only need to do it once in their life the rest of their life is going to shape them probably a bit more, the moles are in there all the time.... And what about sand fish...
So regarding the mouth peeing, it turns out salivary glands are very good backup organs for getting toxic stuff out of the body so there's a lot of animals out there that do that to varying degrees, but the most famous form that people are well aware of is actually venom. A lot of venomous animals actually have broken machinery in their body that would kill them if they weren't sequestering it in their salivary system and then it doubles as a weapon. Anyhow baseline salivary glands good at removing weird stuff from the body just not permanently since you swallow it again unless you happen to be aquatic. It's very cool that it looks like this turtle species probably ended up with bad kidneys accidentally while fully aquatic and then developed the behavior to mouth rinse once it got out of the water more though I'm just speculating on the order of events here. Remember evolution doesn't pick an intelligent path, as long as an animal stays alive and reproduces that's all that matters so if something breaks but isn't necessary for the current style of life it doesn't matter which is why sometimes what starts out as a disability and one environment can become an adaptation in another.
Also just a quick fun fact the cloaca of many turtles is actually on the tail so it's a little unique in that manner.

True story: I had pet box turtles growing up. My mom hated their poop getting all over the house, so we made little diapers for them out of giant bandaids. We cut a little hole for their tail and secured it to the top and bottom of their shell. This is the first time I have ever heard of another turtle diaper.

When you talked about not wanting to game when you get older, and being called and "old soul" as a kid, I felt relief cause I felt seen 😁
I gotta topic for you: amphisbaens! I found one of these flopping around in some leaves at the bottom of my driveway (I was sweeping up leaves.) I first assumed it was an earthworm, but it was smaller than most earthworms. I guess it was 1/16th in. in diameter, and about 3 1/2 in. long. I carefully picked it up and it turned out to be strong and continued to flop around. I held it long enough to get a good look at it, it was unlike anything I'd seen before. Researching to ID it I found out It had annular rings for scales, the eyes were covered by translucent scales, and it was black in color. I let it go in my garden and did some investigating online and discovered amphisbaens. They are reptiles that burrow in the ground!
I saw a turtle vocalizing and it seemed like attempted communication. A roommate had a pair of pet turtles that were very close before one passed away and every night for a couple days the turtle would make a weird noise like he was yelling or calling out for the other turtle. He was always quite aside from that.

I went a while without seeing a doctor and had problems with my back. When I did it turned out I had osteoporosis and a few fractured vertebrae and a couple flattened discs. Go to the doctor and talk to him/her.
As a 1976 model human, I feel old. Statistically I'm older than about 55% of humans currently alive, or so I'm told by statistics.

Omg The intro discussion had me like "same" for every complaint! 😂 Though, given what Hank and Ceri describe when playing video games: it's likely time for you both to get carpal tunnel surgery. 😅 I'm having it next week. It sounds scary, but apparently takes 10 mins, not even full anesthesia is needed, and I've literally never heard of anyone having negative side effects after.
My hands started going numb when I played video games too long. Then they started going numb when I sleep if I'm not wearing a wrist brace at night. Now I can barely play games at all and have pain all time time. 😢 I'm excited to get back to my hobbies soon! ❤
Seconded. I had both my wrists done a couple years ago. It took longer to get back to normal usage than I'd been lead to believe, but once there, I've had zero trouble with numb hands.

The turtle poem needs a special page in the SCISHOW TANGENTS POETRY BOOK. 10/10. One of the best. If I find a publisher willing to take on the project, will you guys agree to it??? My father owns a publishing company (it is super niche, true, only psychology books,) but he knows people! If I could will things into being, this would already be on my shelf. (Then again if it were already on my shelf, it wouldn't have the turtle poem.)

Hank, please. The assignment was a poem, not a whole children’s book.
The favorite part of my job, which has a lot of clients who were in primary school during WW2, is when someone born in the 50s comes in and tries to argue that they are probably the standard age or oldest person I've talked to that day, and I have to go "Ma'am, you are basically an infant compared to the last twenty people I had on the phone."
The cutoff line is 1940. Everyone born before that is old. Everyone after is a darn kid who needs to stop trying to violate the medical privacy of polio survivors. There is no inbetween.

My choir recently did an Easter anthem which is a setting of some text from Song of Solomon (a.k.a. Song of Songs) in the Bible. The KJV-era English says,
"My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.
For lo, the winter is past, the rain is over, and gone.
The flowers appear on the earth, the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.
The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell.
Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away."
I'm amused by the single grape and its "good smell," but of course the winning phrase is "the voice of the turtle is heard in our land." Of course it means "turtle dove."

Hold up, you guys forgot to include my favorite group of reptiles, birds! Birds are crocodilians’ closest relatives, so if all those animals are reptiles, so are birds.
The best way to feel old is to listen to teenagers talk about music... or watch them try to connect up and turn on any game console from the 90s... the REACT channel may specifically just make me feel old 😅 It also makes me feel old when I remember that Disney Movie, "Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century", when she tells Protozoa "you're not old until you reach like 30," and he replies, "Love... I'm 31." And then you realize you're older than Old Protozoa 😅

I am unnecessarily angry that it is repeatedly implied in this episode that birds are not reptiles. Turtles are more closely related to birds than they are to lizards! Birds are dinosaurs for crying out loud!
It's so weird. I don't feel old - emotionally or mentally at all. I have leukemia so my body feels old but that's manufactured by cells that need extincting. I was born one month after the TET offensive Yep. I was born in the 60's and yeah we didn't drink enough water in the 80's but it's all we drank in the 70's hahahaha. We drank soda and Jim Beam in the 80's And we smoked - all kinds of things LOL. And we did LSD and did things we wouldn't let our kids and we knew they could so we were hyper up in their business and that's why the world is so messed up now hahahaa.
I am currently writing my bachelor project in vocalizations in reptiles and my professor has done loads of research on reptile vocalizations and auditory function. Jakob Christensen-Dalsgaard.
So this was such a fun episode to listen to as I am working on my project.
