    At 4:39, it is rolling left but the right aileron is deflected up ( at least it looks like it to me) which is not "natural". Is that pilot input or FBW trying to minimize adverse yaw?

    • @Airguardian
      @Airguardian  7 лет назад +46

      I am glad that you noticed it (I did too). It may not seem natural but it is. If you look more carefully at the entire maneuver you can see that the pilot starts the rotation with the natural roll input (Left roll). It can be seen especially well at time marks 4:37 and 4:38. But the plane has so much inertia that you need to start adding counter-roll input before the maneuver ends so that you don't overshoot. That is why you see the inverse aileron deflection. The roll reversal happens at 4:38 also. To which degree it is pilot-input or FBW commanded, that, I am not sure of. I would bet that it is a combination of both. ;)

    • @griffn14
      @griffn14 7 лет назад +10

      Yes, probably both. It was so weird that I had to rewind it a couple of times because it was confusing me haha

    • @janmb
      @janmb 7 лет назад +7

      Also, at least at the start of the maneuver, 4:35, he has some level of flaps deployed. Both ailerons are higher than the corresponding flaps at that time. So if you only look the right aileron at that moment, it looks weird as hell, but once you realize the left aileron is even higher it makes more sense.

    • @Airguardian
      @Airguardian  7 лет назад +8

      I think you are wrong this time. I don't think it has flaps deployed at that point. If you watch in detail some pics of the MiG-35 you will see that the flaps have a larger chord than older MiG-29 flaps. It is one of the improved features of the new design. When they are retracted, the flaps' chord spans further aft compared to the ailerons and do not align on the trailing edge. You can see the same thing happening with the rudders (Although this already occurred on the MiG-29) and on the rudders of the SU-35 and SU-30SM. The vertical fins have less backswept and slightly larger control surface ;)

    • @janmb
      @janmb 7 лет назад +5

      That makes perfect sense, and will provide precisely the same visual illusion of both ailerons being elevated

    I once chatted to a pilot at an airshow and he told me that one of the things to look for to see how good a pilot is, is the transitions between maneuvers. Quite often you'll see a wobble, hesitation or level flight for a fraction of a second while the pilot is re-orienting or gathering his composure. Only the very best pilots will flow seamlessly from maneuver to the next. I didn't see a single hesitation in this display.

    I remember as a kid in the 1980s falling in love with the MIG-29. And being American the other kids would rip on me and call me a commie, they liked planes like the F-15 or F-16, but I loved the sleek lines of the 29.I'm glad to see that beautiful design lives on in the stunning MIG-35.

    • @Airguardian
      @Airguardian  6 лет назад +43

      One doesn't have to be commie or capitalist or anything just because they like a foreign aircraft. I certainly do like American jets and I'm totally opposed to their foreign policy. I love the russian fighters even more and I don't support the things that were done wrong in the Soviet Union. People that bully, especially those using invalid arguments really are worth so little... So just go love what you please and don't let others tell you what do you have to think! (I'm sure you already know this from your comment but had to give voice my thoughts anyway). Merry Christmas!

    A real masterpiece of flying meets a real masterpiece of photography. Great work ! The ripping turn at 4 minutes mark was epic, including the audio. Missing a tiny bit was understandable. My amateur guess that was a full 9g turn. I much prefer this display of high speed maneuvers over the stall speed thrust vectoring antics the Flanker family has popularized. Maybe we'll be treated to a high speed display by a Su-35 some day, and I hope this photographer is there to capture it.

      I actually like both types of displays, but I prefer slow-post-stall demonstrations. Ideally I would love to see a display of both combined. Hopefully some day! Not sure of how many Gs at minute 4:00 but certainly the spine of Mr. Belyaev must have been quite compressed, lol. 😂

      It is the upgraded version of the RD-33 (RD-33MK).
      The MiG-29s used by the Strizhi aerobatic team still use the old version and the black exhaust smoke is still present there, but all the new Klimov engines are much more improved... not only in burning efficiency but also in reliability and service life. Old engines lasted about 600h whereas the new ones are around 2000h, closer to western standards. The Saturn engines on all the new Sukhoi jets are also great performers :)

    F-16 may be rightfully famed for its agility but Mig 29s were the real kings of close air combat. Even their early versions, with the austere electronics and smoking engines where better dogfighters, courtesy of their HMS (a first in fighter aircraft), all aspect R-73s and extreme maneuverability. West German pilots who flew them after the reunification disliked their cockpit, short range and electronic suite but were amazed by the flight abilities and close range weapon systems. One of the commanders of the German Mig-29 squadrons, who has also flown Tornados, F-16s and F-15s, declared the Mig-29 "invincible" in close combat and former soviet crack regiment pilots have stated that Mig-29s "killed" Su-27s regularly. This late model has what the Mig 29 always needed. Modern engines, state of the art electronics and, for the first time, adequate range. Combined with the vintage excellent airframe, this is a very dangerous opponent to any fighter out there.

      Very true, great comment. Sukhoi's however are purposely designed to be larger for long range engagements and more capabilities. The great strides in Russian electronics industry over the years has allowed for modern radars to be reduced enough to put on a smaller aircraft like the MiG 35. The Zhuk AE is a very capable system and in my opinion makes the MiG 35 better suited for fighting western aircraft than the Su 30SM.

    Those are some hard black and red G turns. Russian pilots are insane. He ties that thing up in knots but it's still instantly controllable as indicated by airspeed after the wrong un! At about 4:40 he did get the barrel roll wrong and had to wipe off airspeed and go into a cobra. Nicely done. Sure he stuffed up and that could have been a fatal stall except for the nozzles. The other option is that he pulled out (yawed in (up) tight) and did it on purpose. I guess he was gonna do it at some point. OMG at 6:03 all his blood would have been in his feet. That was such a savage rotation to climb.

    • @Airguardian
      @Airguardian  6 лет назад

      Nothing was wrong. That's exactly what the pilot wanted to display. All the days of the show he performed the same routine. Mind that this jet does not have thrust vectoring nozzles. And yeah, the pull up at 6.03 is quite epic :D

    It's good that the engine exhaust looks crystal now. I would like to see it pushed to the limit though. The fulcrum, beautiful and mighty as it is, has engines that look like coal burners when pushed to afterburner.
    In a theoretical dogfight scenario the fulcrum would be easy to spot due to the trail, good thing it has arguably the best corner velocity of all the birds in its generation.

    • @Airguardian
      @Airguardian  6 лет назад

      Apparently the new generation of Klimov engines have solved the problem of inefficient burning and now the trails are clear enough :)
      Still, the airforce has yet to receive the MiG-35 in numbers... all older MiG-29 still use the old engines I'm afraid.

      It is, indeed. It is one of the modifications of the MiG-35 over the legacy MiG-29. My guess is that they did it to allow for lower wing loading, better maneuverability and shorter take-off and landing runs ;)
