Troy Waters had the heart of a lion to withstand a Terrible Terry Norris combinations like that. He also had a phenomenal jab straight right combination which landed on Terry giving him the most trouble. He throws it so un telegraphed which Terry couldn't see it coming, look at when Terry gets up from the knockdown the first punch Troy throws is a straight right without telegraphing it at all. SWEET SCIENCE.
No way! Very talented, but his chin was too weak to be considered an all-time great. He was a dirty fighter, too...had a habit of hitting fighters when they were down.
@@eddiedustin5449 I don't think his chin was made of glass? I think it was more like Tommy Morrison. When he got hit, he got hit with the whole damned kitchen🤷♂️
Rest easy, TROY! great lad, and one heck of a scrapper. your country and family will never forget you. Along with your American fans. sail on across the sky!
This was Terry Norris in a nutshell. Comes out fast and puts Waters on the canvas plus the point deduction for hitting him on the floor then it nearly ends in disaster before Terry's class prevails. All in 3 wild rounds.
Came close to getting himself knocked out in a fight he should be winning with little trouble. As soon as he found out Waters was easy to hit he just unloaded with zero care to his defence. Didn't learn from this at all as he fought the same way against Simon Brown 2 fights later, difference being that Brown was a much better fighter than Waters, so Norris gets knocked out. Exciting to watch but tactically reckless. He could easily have picked Waters off, won every round and probably stopped him late on. Fighting the way he did gave Waters a puncher's chance.
It was the left hook to the body that put Norris down. The left hook to the body took his legs away. Norris felt it and that was the punch, not the right hook that glanced his head.
He was a compasssionate guy in this fight. Waters wanted to go on but was taking fearful punishment and the ref and doctor were going to let it go on. He made the brave decision to pull Waters out.
Rip troy, I was lucky enough to have met you personally at the mundine gym in eveleigh street Redfern back in the year 1990 ,Troy you were a great boxing son of this wonderful country Australia taken away so young. I will always enjoy watching your fights on RUclips. You can out of a great boxing family. Rip Troy.
I come here time to time to watch this fight because Troy was so great and am saddened to hear what happened to him as I never saw this on the news in the UK.. RIP
If you watch you can see Waters give Terry a little bit of his own medicine and hit him when he was down. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Terry Norris fan. He was sometimes over exuberant and at others demonstrated poor judgement or carelessness.
Everyone makes excuses for Norris which is nonsense. He was a sucker puncher when he saw the opportunity without question. He knew what he was doing. When he tried that in the Sugar Ray Leonard fight I lost all respect for him. The Luis Santana fight he sucker punches him in two different bouts and gets disqualified. Look at his record numbers don't lie. He has 3 losses due to DQ. Stop saying it was in the heat of battle or poor judgment it is just called a sucker-punch. Hitting someone when their down on not looking.
Another quality central coast fighter. The honour roll from that region punches well above its weight. As you can see. Troy waters just about caused the biggest upset of that decade. Terry learnt why u dont take light any opponent
Damn! Norris was good, but acted like it was 3rd fights. You can tell he is a boxer puncher, but he forcing his punching power when he didn’t need too.✊🏿☀️🌟🔥💯
3rds fights is what I meant to say. It could have been the arrogance in his personality that went into the fight. He once had a high school fight on his baseball team because the N word was used, if I remember he put someone in the hospital
“That’s not going to help his quest for one of the pound for pound best.” WHAT THE FUCK?!?!? Dude, what the FUCK are you talking about?!?!? Being able to come back from a round like that, that is a prerequisite that puts you closer to that title!!!!! SMMFH!!!!
Norris was considered one of the best after Chavez and Whitaker at this time. Compared to the two, Norris showed more moments of mortality. You talk about him coming back after nearly being KO'd in the 2nd but he shouldn't be in that position in the first place. Troy Waters was considered a nobody which is why they said it would be the upset of the decade if Norris lost. Norris had a good record but his notable victories were against boxers past their prime like Leonard and Mugabi and a worn-out boxer like Meldrick Taylor. He also didn't unify his belts against guys in his division like Julio Cesar Vasquez (WBA), Gianfranco Rosi (IBF), John David Jackson (WBO), Verno Philips (WBO). That's most likely not completely on him though, but both Chavez and Whitaker where able to unify their belts around this point.
@@barrybarnes96 Can work great against a fighter who throws a lot of straight shots - jabs and right hands (see: Witherspoon v Larry Holmes), but against someone like Norris who has every punch in the book, is fast, aggressive and throws great short hooks and uppercuts you are asking for trouble. Waters best chance (not much of one tbh) here would be to try to pot shot at range as he had a decent jab, then try to tie Norris up in close. Ducking his head down he couldn't see the shots at all and was just relying on his gloves to save him. We can see how that worked out. This must have set a record for punch accuracy (for Norris) and shots landed by one guy in a 3 round fight.
False. He was super aggressive, walked into clean shots. You do that and unless your chin is granite you'll get in trouble. Norris wasn't super durable but nobody has a career like his with a "bad chin".
Respect to Adam for this vid of a true Australian champion. Can't help but thinking there was something not right about Troy not coming out for the 4th round, he seemed to be soaking punishment to tire Norris but showed he can also compete on his level (easily). He didn't seem hurt too much and in any other fight would have come out for the next round, something not right about this..., then I saw Don King in the Norris corner..... hello$$$$$$$$$
No,, that is just not true what you say. He was game and tough but this was a league to classy for him to compete. You have to be honest. With the right coaching maybe he could have been special, but he just didn't have it.

A lot of greats had suspect chins, but it doesn't mean they weren't great. Tommy Hearns comes to mind. Hearns is a legend but he lost to Iran Barkley, someone who shouldn't have lost to. He nearly lost to James Kinchen too because of that chin. Felix Trinidad would get dropped regularly too (Campas, Reid, Carr). The only losses Norris had in his prime were Julian Jackson, who was one of the hardest hitters in history and Simon Brown, who was a former P4P entrant. The Norris learned and boxed his way to an easy win. His later loss to Keith Mullings was Norris being on the downward slide as he lost his next 2 fights before retiring. Norris just had a tendency to brawl more than was sometimes necessary.
@@trackandfieldarchive Norris was much more vulnerable and flawed, even at his natural weight. We only saw Tommy become more vulnerable as he went multiple weight divisions.

Biased? They were giving Waters major credit, considering that was gettling absolutely killed. He dropped Norris with a good shot and did land some decent stuff but Norris was outlanding him 10 to 1 and it was getting dangerous how many shots he was eating. His chance of an upset had arrived and gone in the 2nd, it was mostly a painful watch in round 3. Waters corner stopped the fight, saved him a horrendous beating in round 4 or however long he could have lasted.

True
Disagree. Waters hits him with a short right to the chin, which shaes Norris, then the body shot, which was low and finally the knockdown shot.
