Not ugly by any means, but with all things machinery, heft is the pinnacle of aesthetics, and the f-14 does a fine job of conveying that.

We had an airshow about 25 years ago in my small little town. An F-14 came up from California I believe, and I was standing outside my apartment when the thing flew over. I swear the tomcat was 200 feet above me and the damn ground shook at how much horsepower this American Marvel has ,(it has 50,000 THOUSAND , horsepower). I was in total awe and thought what if that plane was loaded for war? I would just go on vacation until it was over. The F-14 is the Most Beautiful plane next to the P-51C Mustang. If you ever get a chance to see or hear a tomcat, please do it, it is a total TRIP.
Superimpose some shades over the cockpit and a cigar out of its nose because that was one, bad-ass war bird. It not only looked bad ass, it could kick ass 7/24 and twice on Sundays. Load that bad ass with ordinance and you had one, mean machine looking to take out bad guys. The F 14 was an awesome jet all the way around.
Yeah I know if only we had Men in the DC who had the foresight to see that China might be the next greatest threat to the US in the future. Then they would not only retired the Tomcat, but a lot other great Navy jets would still be in mothball for the future. And that Grumman would been given the go ahead to start designing and developing the F-14D and ST-21.

Not that the f-14 isn't the best ever but it would be far too costly to to introduce a 21st century f-14 but the Super Hornet and F16 are just as affective and will remain in the frontline until the F-35 Lightning enters service.
One issue the hornet isn't a dedicated fighter and USN is needing a dedicated fighter for fleet defense the F/A-18 hornet doesn't have a radar that can reach out as far as the F-14 Tomcat and the F-35 Lightning can't carry the necessary payload that the F-14 Tomcat can. Edit: it'll be hell of a lot cheaper to upgrade than it would be to put a whole new jet into production to put the F-35 Lightning into service and production the price can range any where between $94.6 million to $121.8 million USD
I see lots of "why did we discontinue this fighter?"... folks, the reason for the MASSIVE radar array, the specialized missile systems, the subsonic/supersonic flexability was all for a single role. She is not a dedicated fighter, she is not a general, high flexability platform like the -16... she was made to permit us a 50% chance of STOPPING NUKES. At 100 miles out, no missile is rated to take out fighters... but dumb rockets heading into orbit she can. Carriers do not carry birds they do not need. Limited space and all. Without the CRITICAL need for anti-missile platforms... we stopped using them. But they are on ice waiting.
This is all footage from the documentary “Speed and Angels”, it follows two fresh F-14 graduates learning to dogfight the aircraft and then going to the fleet. I dare say majority of that training is subsonic.
