  • The New York Militia rifle, is an interesting gun. With a more advanced mechanism, than any other rolling block. Featuring an automatic safety mechanism. Watch it being demonstrated, and fired. With black powder of course...

      Thankyou Gene! The guy who figured out this mechanism, was a hell of a lot smarter than me. I still haven't figured out how it all works. Certainly an interesting gun, and I enjoyed shooting it.

    I had an old Remington made Spanish Rolling Block that was in excellent firing order, and a friend in Tucson had a .50-70 U.S. Navy marked Carbine barrel (that would take the full size .50-70 but was meant for using a shortened .50-70 cartridge with a 430-grain bullet and 45 grains of black powder.) The Barrel was RARE as would be the completed rifle, to my shock Numrich had a single band carbine forend (that needed the oil boiled out) for it. A cartridge collector who had heard of my project GAVE ME an original internally primed short .50-45 Navy cartridge for it!
    However my employee also my friend (who was dying of cancer) asked me to 'borrow' the project as well as a new .44 Special 3rd Generation Colt SAA in blue and case colors with a 7 1/2" barrel that one could shoot the lights out with! (He said was tired of using the Italian copies and always wanted a real Colt.) He said it would be a good deal for me and in the end I'd get the completed rifle back which his friend (Ol' Charlie the gunsmith) would finish for us!
    When I went to visit him in '90 he showed me the completed rifle (which was beautiful) and said "Hey did you know that barrel you gave me wasn't a .45-70, it was a .50-70." And I said yes and told him that I had informed him of that. He said "Well old Charlie said that I didn't want it in .50-70 so he made me a barrel from a blank in .45-70 for it." And I asked "Bob, what did he do with the Remington Carbine barrel?" and he replied "Oh, he just threw that away..." And I asked "The Cartridge that went with it?" And he replied "Oh, he just threw that away too. They weren't worth anything you know, .50-70's are too expensive to shoot, nobody wants them."
    To top that off, he showed me a well used 3rd Generation Colt SAA with a 7 1/2" barrel in shiny nickel that was chambered in .45 Colt. And he said "Oh, by the way that's your Colt .44 Special 7 1/2", I traded for it."
    In the end I just gritted my teeth and did not comment, after all the guy's on his deathbed. and I never got any of the 'Borrowed' firearms back anyways so it made no difference!

      @@Dimwit_the_last_mountainman He's gone now, but wouldn't you love to have a Navy Rolling Block Carbine in .50-45/.50-70! When I was young I took it for granted that we would always be able to gather such projects. If I knew then what I know now I would have picked up so very much more!!!

    71+ year old FUD here. I shoot a custom 45-70 built on a 43 Spanish action for Black Powder Cartridge Silhouette shoots. 50+ years experience with muzzle loaders playing mountain man and all sorts of other firearm. Interesting version of the trapdoor Springfield BUT finger on the trigger with rifle ready to fire while looking at camera before looking down range, then mounting the rifle and finding the target? Really?! Great potential for negligent discharge at a minimum. This guy needs some safety instruction and/or attention from a range officer.

      Howdy, Helmut! Just gotta love those 50-70 caliber guns. My sword has been with me for quite some time. Check out my video about the 210 year old Springfield musket called Satan. About half way in the film, I give a closer look of the sword, and talk about it. It is a Japanese police sword, used between 1885 and the end of the Second World War. Short and handy, originally intended for protection against prisoners, inside cells and corridoors. It is my last resort against the mighty wolf!

    Hi John, I played this back at one -quarter speed as there is a big red flash just below the muzzle ( only at 3:15 ) a few frames before the gun fires !!!??? Never saw that on any gun video. Your thoughts please. ....Doc ( see settings cog wheel for speed control )

      Hi, Doc! You're right! I don't have any explaination. Think I'll blame on electronics. Or Gremlins... Never tried altering the speed of the video before. Interesting! Gonna have to try that some more...

    • @sterlingcr7860
      @sterlingcr7860 2 года назад

      Nice catch Doc. (Hi again John) I noticed the same thing saw the comment and looked again at low speed. Lighting and camera angle make a huge difference in how the fireball is perceived and recorded. Electronics and camera resolution are certainly factors too. Given its color and uniformity, it looks like the hot combustion gases (better stoichiometry) that precede the remaining "soot" from the discharge. Definitely worth checking at low speed. John is a better shooter than me.... In my video.... I close my eyes and flinch. ruclips.net/video/5CGwPsYsnlo/видео.html
