Geoff, I worked as the operations director of a couple of Volvo dealers. we relied heavily on DAB (Dealer Achievement Bonus) Basically we would sell cars with 15% off to hit targets and get £3-400 per car if we hit sales targets and had a good CSI(customer Satisfaction Index). Tyn Lon Garage where always top of the CSI and Volvo's pet dealer to video and promote the CSI to the ret of us. For that reason although a great family business we all were fed up of them being shoved down our throats.
I was on holiday around 10 years ago on Anglesey. I stopped to look at the Volvos in that dealership. I ended up buying my first ever Second Hand) Volvo once I got back home in South London. Thank you Anglesey.
@@GeoffBuysCarsHad a camping holiday in Great Malvern in 1988, it did rain a lot, but I'll always remember climbing to the peak of the hills & taking in the fantastic views up there! I think it's said you can see 17 counties on a clear day!
I'm with you there. By and large the damn things are a pain once the seals degrade with age and the drain tubes clog up/go brittle and crack/fall off and cause water leaks everywhere. Never had one on a Volvo though so maybe they're built better?
Car parts in general are really poor quality at the moment. I bought a set of OEM shock absorbers from my local Nissan dealer, and they were terrible. Made the ride uncomfortably harsh, and caused the car to pull hard to the right all the time (and yes, I had the tracking done). Then, on the motorway, it suddenly snapped left and put me on the hard shoulder. Frightened me to death. I put the original parts back on, and all the problems went away. Nissan insist they were correct, even though they're clearly not, and refuse to refund or exchange them. The Motor Ombudsman can't even look at the case for at least 6 months due to a backlog, so I'm left £1000 out of pocket; that's not including the cost of two vehicle inspections, and two wheel alignments. Whole things a nightmare.
The standout thing I remember about the first XC was that Volvo said it was absolutely essential that if you changed one tyre you had to change them all, to keep the rolling circumference the same on all the wheels to prevent the drivetrain winding up and papping itself, Maybe that's why the rear prop was taken off? It's bit of a drastic way to do it but it's a 100% effective way of preventing that problem occurring.
You went past the area where my sister and nephew live to pick this car up. My Sister lives on the top of the Flint mountain area and my nephew lives in a town at the bottom. When the snow comes he has to get up the mountain to see his mum and deliver groceries etc because her village gets cut off, so he has a 4x4 with snow tyres, … and in case he gets stuck in the back he has snow chains, a rope and towing stuff, spare food and water rations, 2 stoves to heat food and water, a way of building a shelter and other stuff to stay warm. On his journeys he regularly comes across town folk stuck half way up the mountain up to their axles in snow drifts. When he stops to help quite often it’s a bloke driving a small front wheel drive hatchback wearing shorts and t-shirt, training shoes with no socks, and the wife in the passenger seat and kids in the back are wearing pyjamas. Their boot is usually empty, they have no blankets, no water and no way of surviving in the extreme cold. When asking what are they doing here they reply, “we thought it would be nice to go to the top of the mountain because it will look pretty with all the snow.” His reply is usually.. “let me guess, you have a bar of Kendal mint cake in the glove box”
I had a 2003 V70R AWD - basically the vanity version of this. In performance (use the word loosely) guise it had huge grip and was more or less impossible to bin even if you were being deliberately cack handed with it. Bought as a quick flip to get me out of an E46 Alpina B3 3.3, ended up keeping it for 5 years because it was so accomplished at being really rather brilliant. Sold in 2013, and I've been in Volvos ever since - which is probably the highest praise you can give a car; being so good it converts you entirely to the marque. However, on snow and ice on low profiles it was a bit rubbish - the AWD and TCS could never agree on what should be happening and it would crab about all over the place. Bit disappointing for a Swedish car it must be said. But as it snows once a decade down here on the south coast, it wasn't really an issue.
The Gen 1 Volvo V70 Cross Country would have been around the £30,000 mark when new in 1997 which was 1.75 times the average UK salary, which is about £58,000 in today's money when adjusted for inflation or 1.45 times the average salary just to give you an idea about what would be a reasonable ballpark for a brand new modern equivalent to cost. 1.75 times the average UK salary today would be £70,000. You mentioned in the previous video that a new approximate equivalent was around £68,000 which is about comparable to this V70 when new. I've found some old top gear magazines I had from the late 90's and had a look at the new car prices when adjusted for inflation for today and I'm not convinced that new cars today are any worse than they were 25-30 years ago when it comes to value for money. The equivalent cheap car to today's Dacia Sandero in 1997 when adjusted for inflation would be something like a Vauxhall Corsa or Ford Fiesta. Comparing a 1997 Corsa or Fiesta to a 2024 Sandero I think few could argue that the 1997 cars were better value in terms of comfort, refinement, safety, driving dynamics, features, fuel efficiency, quality of interior and interior space compared to the 2024 car. At the other end of the spectrum, a base model Porsche 911 was £66,000 in 1997 which is £127,000 today when adjusted for inflation yet a 2024 base model 911 is just over £100,000.
I had exactly the same volvo just in burned red colour. I remember towing mk4 golf on the trailer and still achieved 32mpg. Even know 55mph is not fast but still i think for petrol engine that's pretty good 👍
5:03 Hi, I have cleaned those sticky windowswitch buttons with a rag soaked in windshield washing fluid (winter type with ethanol that we have here in Finland, maybe other ethanol products can be used also). The sticky sh*t will remove in couple minutes of rubbing, texts and symbols not harmed. Free tip to use at your own risk. My V70 1999 diesel automatic has 710 000 kilometers.
Jeff having the car valeted before going off road, doesn't make sense. It's like vacuuming out the car then picking all the grandkids up and giving them food to eat.
I love it too Geoff... It's not a base model because the S (standard) model had fabric/plastic seats. It's an SE with a winter pack but the SE came with cruise control as standard so I am inclined to think that it could be just an S with winter pack and optional leather(?) In any case it's a car that needs to be cherished and kept alive forever.

The first generation had issues with the splined shaft to the transfer box. This was 1st Gen Haldex system. 90% of the drive went through the front wheels. It was common for the propshaft to be removed, and if memory serves me right there were 3 different propshafts.

Try fitting your lower arms loosely then jacking up the wheel under the ball joint until you’ve compressed the spring to its natural ride position then tighten your lower arm bolts. Some bushes get nipped up in the downward position causing stress when on its wheels….thus accelerating wear…or ya buying cheap parts

Here in new zealand i found a volvo v70 2.5 auto with 150,000km in good condition apart from tire wear on one side for around $2000 would that be a good purchase geoff ?
Hey Geoff , my 200TDi Range Rover had a viscous centre diff and it started seizing on at 137,000 miles , so maybe that’s why they disconnected the rear wheel drive part if the drive shaft is missing. I’ve been looking at a V40 Cross country D2, it’s a dark bronze colour; got good MOT and service history and a Clean MOT for 10 months. It’s a 14 reg with 114k on the clock, is £4k a sensible price? The other thing is that it’s a Powershift Auto which I know nothing about, basically I’m looking at an older car because all of the new ones are a) so expensive and b) too complicated. I do have a couple of other alternatives but knowing about your knowledge of Volvos I thought it might be worth asking.
PS cruise control should just be a stalk swap, pretty sure I made my old low spec runout T5 work that way, maybe a relay as well, though it was a long time ago.
well, not sure more reliable bcuz my best swedish mechanic says very weak design in the P2. Often it's not operating and gives no indication that's obvious until u need it. And in P2, often too expensive to refurb bcuz no guarantee that new angle gear or such, will result in a smooth set up. Often driveshaft vibes afterward, and thus u keep having dilemma's of spending a lot more to have no guarantee the final set up will be vibe free. Saw someone spend 3500 to repair and still vibe w/ brand new driveshaft. Had to disconnection permanently
@@18_rabbit I think the connection between transmission and anglegear is the weakest point of p2 awd, it rusts inside and then jumps off the teeth and breaks the teeth on anglegear shaft also. It needs to be checked and replaced in time for less damage, lot of grease in new one to prevent rust issue. Also oilchange for haldex and angle gear might prevent problems.
@nixswatson yeh that's right, I have a couple of mk5 and a mk2, the mk6 imo the last model that's still quite analogue, any newer and they look to modern imo lol

I'm a bricklayer/stonemason. I've got a 2008 transit connect with a fair bit over 200 thou on it. It owes me F'all now. Well had my money's worth out if it, but it's leaking oil, and has sounded rough AF for about 2 years 😂 I've spent a lot on getting it through MOTs, and having it fixed, over the last e years because its exempt from the "clean air" BS, cause i had it when they brought it in. Basically it's ready to die on me at any minute. I was thinking about getting a 4×4 or an estate car, and putting the back seats down, but I'm m working with a tight budget atm. I was thinking maybe something like this Volvo you've bought here, or a Honda CRV or something similar. Has anyone got any recommendations for me please?
Geoff or anyone could you do me a massive favour and measure the boot on this ? (trying to find this online has proven impossible for me) From the back of the seats to the the boot lid when closed Across the back of the seats (wheel well to wheel well) across the opening apature From the boot floor to the parcel shelf height and from the parcel shelf to the roof I know they are bigger but i need to know how much bigger and if moving to a V70 series is actually worth it. (i've a wheel chair i need to carry for someone and it takes rather a lot of room up in my current V60)

Funny how we all have different likes.dislikes with the accessories, my P3 XC70 is laden with tech but glad it does not have a sunroof.
Hmmmm.....
Macmaster-like interludes increasing !!!!!!!!
less filler , more killer
I don't watch the Mccrapmaster due to his filler & click bait...😕
Only because I like snow. I’ll stop 😂
@@GeoffBuysCars I like snow toooo....best filler ever, don't stop!
Geoff i have an 850 awd, do you know of a good mechanic i could send her too to be restored?
Nice car but shouldn't have any rust apart from where damaged.
Sick ❤
😂jokes
Get a GOLD VALET, then wheel spin through muddy snow 😂
The problem with XC70 and XC90s? The AWD is crap! As many a Volvo specialist has found out. Expensive to fix.
The 4WD with the Visco system was crap. The later one with the Haldex was a bit better and more reliable.
well, not sure more reliable bcuz my best swedish mechanic says very weak design in the P2.
What's slow scenery?
But if you haven't got the rear prop it won't be a problem
how do get around being classed as a car dealer?
Keep em 😂
Have you checked out drivetribes latest video, where he goes to a massive volvo scrap yard?
Interesting. Where be that? Or better still, where be a mahoosive Fiesta scrap yard???
@nixswatson what mark fiesta? I have a few
@@clivefowler1932 It's 2006 petrol...MK6 is it?
@nixswatson yeh that's right, I have a couple of mk5 and a mk2, the mk6 imo the last model that's still quite analogue, any newer and they look to modern imo lol
@@clivefowler1932 I would like to have summink older like I used to have, bigger boot, mirrors that didn't lie, etc Though could have done without them rusting so easily! I was for ever welding them up lol
The worlds over populated my arse 😂, how much of your journey was inhabited? answer = fu**ing loads of it 😄, 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
geoff you say is brown when i look i see a dusky pink! are my eyes deceiving me??
bet Mrs Geoff loves it!! lol
You're not wrong. I believe they call that colour Rust-Bouquet.
I'm a bricklayer/stonemason. I've got a 2008 transit connect with a fair bit over 200 thou on it. It owes me F'all now. Well had my money's worth out if it, but it's leaking oil, and has sounded rough AF for about 2 years 😂
I've spent a lot on getting it through MOTs, and having it fixed, over the last e years because its exempt from the "clean air" BS, cause i had it when they brought it in.
Volvo V70 D5, buy a well maintained one 👍
Buy the Honda , change the oil every 6 thousand miles and it will last forever,
@@GeoffBuysCars Thanks for the advice 👍🏻
@@MrBlaugeist Cheers pal 👍🏻
lovely car. keep us updated on the awd issue. its a common problem. the parts aren't expensive (100 quid ish)
nice
Geoff - your videos are sooooo much better without the Big Gob from Manchester
4wd never needed just a set of all season tyes...dont believe me go to any ski resort and see for yourself. (Snow chains when its deep )
Those wheels are ugs as bud😂 just swap them out and leave them in the back of the shed👍✌️
Oh shock horror, you got shafted or lack of one.
Geoff or anyone could you do me a massive favour and measure the boot on this ? (trying to find this online has proven impossible for me)
From the back of the seats to the the boot lid when closed
Across the back of the seats (wheel well to wheel well)
across the opening apature
From the boot floor to the parcel shelf height and from the parcel shelf to the roof
I know they are bigger but i need to know how much bigger and if moving to a V70 series is actually worth it. (i've a wheel chair i need to carry for someone and it takes rather a lot of room up in my current V60)
Definitely bigger. Illl measure tomorrow.
@@GeoffBuysCars Legend.
Hate to admit but sometimes did like bit of classical music when I was driving a lot lal💜🙏💜🧙♂️
Bombing a hill in an AWD
Poo brown ?
snow so much for global warming
Hey Geoff , my 200TDi Range Rover had a viscous centre diff and it started seizing on at 137,000 miles , so maybe that’s why they disconnected the rear wheel drive part if the drive shaft is missing. I’m looking for a XC70 myself, so will be watching your how you get on with this. I’ve found a good second hand parts supplier in readiness , but 🤞🤞 I won’t need it too soon. P.S. one your Geoff cars is parked next door 🔎- - - ❌
