Current Maui Resident here: Regarding food... if you shop strategically it's not really any different than mainland. Costco is usually relatively close price-wise, and you can hit safeway/foodland for their weekly specials that are actually cheaper than costco.
This is so true! Before we moved here a friend told me about going to different grocery stores for different items and that's what we've found. Costco takes care of the main things and then you need to find the sales and best deals everywhere else. Coming from the Pacific Northwest prices weren't all that different!
We just got back from our week trip to Maui, and now we are obsessed with figuring out how to get back there and live there. Do you have any connections for anyone that knows about the rental market?
@@lizzieoeyo we moved here from the NW and eventually sold our home there to buy one here. Happy to talk rental market if you want to reach out 808-205-2787.
Good advice... one more thing you have to let people know, especially if you're retired and are getting older. Medical facilities and doctors are VERY limited on maui. If you have any medical problems Maui is not the place to live. Locals have to travel to Oahu or the mainland to get a lot of specialty care. Maui is one of the most beautiful places.... but there are drawbacks.
This is true, there are only 2 main hospitals on island and specialty care requires a trip to Oahu or in some cases the mainland. That said, we've been happy with services so far and great pediatric care.
If you have kids who are school age, education here is abysmal, unless you can afford private school - and that makes food prices pale in comparison. You need to know yourself, your needs and your lifestyle preverence. I'm from Southern California, and I find Maui SO much more a fit for me.
I lived on Maui for 2 years in the early 2000s. Two things I noticed off the bat it was very expensive and outside of the tourist areas the locals really don't like mainland folks, or anyone that does not look native Hawaiian, which was me because I am white. No matter how nice and polite I was, the vibe was seemingly unfriendly. Loved Maui, but just felt like an outsider.
So right in everything you say, I come to Maui all the time and is true expensive, no night life, hot, winding road, windy but if you are a visiter is okay, I don't think I want to live there.
Great video, very informative!❤❤
Mahalo!
You’re very welcome ❤
I think it's important to remember that Hawaii has been a state for less than 70 years so in many ways its identity is still being shaped.

My home is paid off here in Ohio with no debt. I retire in a few more years and wife and I plan to snowbird every winter in Maui
I grew up in Michigan and I sure don't miss those freezing cold winters. Congrats on your upcoming retirement!!

Interesting I haven't felt that much since moving here. I've lived in a few different towns and neighborhoods and always felt welcome.
Hawaii feels like it's not worth it anymore...I hope I'm wrong.
Depends on what you're looking for. Despite the costs it's totally worth it to us.
I just got back from a trip to Maui- believe me, it is worth it.

Yes, all true, but I'm willing to make the sacrifice ;) We find ways to budget, go to bed early, avoid the traffic, and learned a new wind sport haha!
Molokai is where its at
Amazing but not for everyone
