One of the very best of the early (Jones Era) songs, and certainly as cynical a song as the Stones ever wrote. I remember when it first came out being swept up in the apparent romanticism of it, the courtliness, the honeyed words, the flourishes, the parallels between Romantic Period Courtly Love and the late 60s Summer of Love. Then listening to the lyrics and finding the courtly young gentleman to be a rotten little social climber successfully securing his life of ease! As brilliant a social criticism of "gentle" English society as they ever pulled off. It was such an epiphany recognizing that same struggle for power and position going on around me as my friends jockeyed for who would marry whom. 50 years later I still thank the Stones and Lady Jane for saving me from playing that game.

As a history student I appreciate another person comprehending the reality of the song.

The dulcimer of Brian Jones gives this song a special sound and sphere.

this song is wonderful and very impressive; reminds me music from the period of Henvry VIII; reading about him, and thinking about Eric Bana performing him, maybe this song is about three women of that king's life: Mary who was married and also was his lover, Anna that he sent to death and Jane, who was also the wife he loved and had a son. If I am wrong I appologyze. About Beatles, Eleanor Rigby was recorded with violins only, maybe one viola, but reminds me rythm from end of 1800 and is also wonderful and impressive.

Mary Boleyn, mother of Henry's first of two sons, was the sister of Anne Boleyn, and at one point Henry's paramour. Jane Seymour followed the beheaded Anne, and died in childbirth after delivering Edward, son number two, who died at age 15 of a blood disease after ''ruling'' England by Regency. There followed a mad scramble for the throne that culminated finally, in the reign of Elizabeth l, daughter of Anne and Henry. Before that, after Edward, Queen Jane Grey reigned for all of ten days and was then beheaded as a usurper, at the order of Mary Tudor who died of cancer shortly after ascending the throne as queen. Elizabeth followed Queen Mary Tudor, who was her half sister. *****The song was written by Jagger and Keith Richards after Jagger read "Lady Chatterley's Lover" earlier that same year. In the book, "Lady Jane" was a reference to the female genitalia. I don't think the song is a reference to the two wives, and a mistress i.e., Mary Boleyn. Besides, Mary and "Marie" are different. Jagger said, "...the names are historical, but it was really unconscious that they should fit together from the same period".

🔷 Paroles françaises de Lady Jane
    Ma douce lady Jane
    quand je te revois,
    ton serviteur suis-je
    et humblement le resterai.
Écoute seulement cette supplique, mon amour
    agenouillé devant toi mon amour,
je me suis promis à lady Jane.
    Ma chère lady Anne
    j'ai fait de mon mieux,
    je dois prendre congé,
    car je suis promis.
Ce jeu prend fin, mon amour
ton terme est venue mon amour,
j'ai promis mon âme à lady Jane.
    Oh, ma douce Marie,
    je patienterai à ta guise
    le sablier s'est écoulé,
    pour ta lady et moi.
Les noces sont proches, mon amour
sa condition est appréciable, mon amour
La vie est sécurisante avec lady Jane.
