I believe that Dan is more upbeat than his David character in Schitt's Creek.
David is a better person than Dan. He would have shared the pancakes.
I don’t see they at all. David is way more flamboyant and dramatic and over the top. Dan seems really chill and humble (based on this interview, none of us actually know him). They don’t have that much in common to me other than being LGBTQ+, funny, and stylish. Dan himself said he and David have very little in common in an interview.

It's because he writes it. He painted his character in an unrealistic light. I like to call it as I see it. His character David, appearance wise is below average for sure, he has annoying mannerisms, attitude and facial expressions that I cannot stand. He's constantly nagging and judging everyone. He looks like he's missing basic life skills. Yet somehow he tries and succeed partially to make David a much love character.
