It's because he writes it. He painted his character in an unrealistic light. I like to call it as I see it. His character David, appearance wise is below average for sure, he has annoying mannerisms, attitude and facial expressions that I cannot stand. He's constantly nagging and judging everyone. He looks like he's missing basic life skills. Yet somehow he tries and succeed partially to make David a much love character.

My parents got me into it and we usually watch a few episodes together at least a few times a week And David and Patrick's relationship on the show was written so well and seems so genuine.
