The Raag 'Nat Bhairav', which owed its origin to Pandit Ravi Shankar Saab, the finest sitar exponent, had found its right expression in the magical voice of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab in this ghazal, penned by All-e- Raza Saab, with the exact feel, as depicted in the kalam, owing to his inimitable style of gayiki ! That was what we call brilliant and matchless singing style ! To be very true, singer of the caliber and brilliance of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab is born only once in a millennium !

I don't think the first line of your comment is true - "The Raag 'Nat Bhairav', which owed its origin to Pandit Ravi Shankar Saab". There are bandishes that are practised today, composed in Nat Bhairav even before Pt. Ravi Shankar was born. May I ask your source?

Enough literature on the subject is readily available in the public domain and in anybody's reach ! Viewers hardly require a bidding from any quarter, whatsoever ! They are intelligent enough to draw their own inference/conclusion !
Have I ever debarred anyone from cross - checking the veracity or otherwise of it ! I do hereby reiterate with full vehemence at my command that the raag Nat Bhairab owed its origin to Pandit Ravi Shankar, alone ; and to no one else, as claimed by someone in one's comment, herein above ! That's it !
Notwithstanding - I do hereby challenge someone to file a formal complaint to the competent authority about misrepresentation of facts, immediately, if one harbours any genuine apprehension to this effect ; provided, ofcourse, someone is not otherwise a coward !

I'm a student of Indian classical musician and my Guru has been a student of Pt. Jnan Prakash Josh (regarded as a legend in HCM, born 1909) who composed a bandish in Nat Bhairav that we learn and practise today.

The era spanning over almost six decades which was almost completely dominated by the great Mehdi Hassan as an exceptional exponent of ghazal gayiki can very aptly be christened as "RENAISSANCE" in so far as GHAZAL GAYIKI is concerned ! Because, it was the great Khan Saab who had almost single-handedly revived the Ghazal Gayiki as a 'Semi - Classical Music Form', further enriched it though his own contribution, by applying his midas touch, and had catapulted it into the present level of its much wider acceptance across the globe ! To be very true, he had revolutionized the traditional style of Ghazal Gayiki and was instrumental in bringing in a paradigm shift by applying his midas touch making it more soft, refined, soothing, soulful, lively, lyrical, and worth-listening again and again without getting bored ! In doing so, the great Khan Saab had maintained absolute control over Lafz, Sur, Taal, and Loy all along and had never ever compromised on purity of ragas ! In this way, the great Mehdi Hassan Saab had reestablshed the primacy of the Ghazal Gayiki as a 'Semi - Classical Music Form' thereby warding off the onslaught of the rampaging Western Influences successfully ! Thus, great Khan Saab was instrumental in the revival, ascendence, and its further flourish of Ghazal Gayiki and in catapulting it into the present level of its much wider acceptance across the world !
As a matter of fact, the great Mehdi Hassan Saab was the Ghazal Sensation of the Century and Beyond ! Such a resourceful singer will ever be born again in this world !
Let us bow our head in reverence to this great legendary singer and noble soul for his impeccable track record and monumental accomplishments ! Let the departed soul rest in eternal peace ! Let us hope and pray !

As ill luck would have it, I didn't have an opportunity to see the great Mehdi Hassan Saab, while he was performing live, during his lifetime ! This is the one and only regret I am having in my life ! Perhaps, l will have to carry forward this unfulfilled wish to my next birth, if there is any !

What is so special with the great Mehdi Hassan Saab was the fact that he had an uncanny ability to catch the imagination of the listeners, while performing, get them captivated by casting a web around them and carry them along with the rhythm ! Besides, the great Mehdi Hassan Saab had a rare GOD - Gifted ability to render a particular URDU couplet umpteen number of times in umpteen number of ways, each one being fundamentally different from each other !
Personally speaking, the great Khan Saab had cast such a spell on me that it will be difficult to get out of that spell in this lifetime !

Great Mehdi Hasan was not a ghazal singer he was a ghazal tarash just like a sang tarash.
In this ghazal penned by All- e- Raza Saab, the great Mehdi Hassan Saab had proved his worth in Raag Nat Bhairab ! What a beautiful composition it was! How soulfully did the great Khan Saab perform it ! As a matter of fact, no epithet is sufficient to describe this multidimensional talent! To be very true, the great Khan Saab himself was his best introduction! The illustrious career of the great Mehdi Hassan Saab spanning over almost six decades speaks volumes about his abilities as an exceptional exponent of ghazal gayiki! With his sad demise, it was as if that VERY SPIRIT('ROOH') of Ghazal Gayiki had gone ! Oh, what a monumental loss it was to the World Of Music in general and Ghazal Gayiki in particular! Let us stand up and salute this legendary singer and gem of a person for his impeccable track record and stupendous contributions to the World Of Music ! How right was Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab in his assessment in saying - "No one can ever compete with Mehdi Hassan Saab in so far as his control over sur was concerned"!
