  • The most common question any GYROTONIC® trainer will hear in their career is "What is Gyrotonic training?"
This first video, in a series that will strive to eliminate the mystery of Gyrotonic training, focuses on one of the key differences between Gyrotonic training and traditional resistance training... the spine.
Juliu Horvath's quote about resistance: "Gyrotonic is resistance training but with an entirely different intention and technique. The focal point of the Gyrotonic resistance and the technique is the stimulation and strengthening of the nervous system."

    Hello Mike!
I’ve been training with Gyrotonic once per week for 12 classes so far. I really love the concept and the fact that it’s based on circular movements which is how we move and indeed everything in the universe. I’d love to become proficient at the whole system. However I’m quite frustrated with the fact that there’s no info that I can find that explains anything about how to perform any of the exercises. This is the only modality of exercise that I’m aware of that doesn’t have any training manuals. It’s this big “secret” that the creator seems to want to keep from people being able to access the system without spending a huge amount of time and money to even learn anything about it. I totally understand wanting to protect your product and keep it pure to the core and intentions of what you want it to do. At the same time, if he wants it to be practiced in the best possible way there should be a standardized way of at least learning the basics. The way things are as far as I can see, if you brought a hundred different teachers together to explain how to do a given exercise the explanations would vary greatly because of this lack of knowledge. I think Juliu Horvath is greatly hindering the teachers, students, adoption and popularity of this very valuable technique that should be available for everyone. Please enlighten me on this subject. Your video by the way contains more info than anything I’ve seen so far.
    Aloha from the big island🤙

      Aloha,
Actually, the system is very standardized. There is only one headquarters and only one way to become a certified trainer. While the course material has changed over the 24 years I've been doing Gyrotonic training, the roots haven't. If you got 100 trainers together we would all explain the basics of any exercise almost identically. There's alot of finesse and fine tuning and there can be subtle variations but the roots of every exercise would be the same no matter which trainer you speak with. Different trainers might have different depths on different exercises but that's enriching the system, not hindering it. The system is so broad that each trainer can have their own flavor without the base being different.
For clients, you are correct: there is no training manual, books or videos about how to use the equipment. If you're going to purchase a piece of equipment so that you can workout on your own, then you would go through the Foundation training process. But if you're just going to a studio once or twice a week, getting that in depth is unnecessary. If you want to get deeper, speak with your trainer about independent workouts. Not all studios offer independent workouts but it's always worth asking about. That's how you'll learn, by doing, not by reading.
There is no "secret". It's just a much deeper system than using regular weight training equipment at a gym. It does have a much bigger learning curve but that's because there is so much more available to learn.
