For makers who use any kind of sheet metal, this is an important tool: the handheld sheet metal brake. It's basically a pair of pliers purpose-built for bending thin sheet metals. Adam has three pairs of these at different angles, and use them more than you’d think. They’re fantastic for getting nice flat bends on small tabs of metal!

Can you create an episode on making "foley sounds" for movies?
That "sounds" very interesting to me.
Can you provide a link to that jacket he is wearing?
Check out Wehrs Machine sheet metal notcher and their raduis crimper. Thank me later ! Same vice grip principal.
I'm a sheet metal worker. I could go on for days about our tools. Look in to Fairmont tongs. They are not locking but have a lot of great uses. Also stop buying aviation snips. Midwest offset snips allow you to cut circles and curves. Buy a set of reds and greens. Midwest's are the best.
Those are common in the HVAC industry, they make a crimping tool like that too
Man, Tested isn't messing around this year. The content strategy: 100% Adam Savage.
100% success!
I check everyday for new videos because of the Adam savage videos!
Ssssshhhhhh! You’ll jinx it!
They finally figured out no one wants to see that cringy asian dude or anyone else for that matter. Jen is ok though.
How can you compete with the celebrity of Adam savage? If you think about it, it was pretty obvious that this would happen. Adam just has years of TV under his belt, and he’s really good at explaining things in an interesting way. Plus we all know and love him. Nothing against norm, but I’d take Adam any day because let’s face it we miss him in myth busters!
Couple tips from a tinknocker, weld a ring to the bottom of the vice grips to make it easy to really tighten (and loosen) them.
Finally if you haven't tried Fairmont tongs you are missing out. They are heavy and expensive but make it hard to go back to any other seamers.
Used in sheet metal fab shops, HVAC shops ,and autobody shops
In the sheet metal industry we call em tongs
Me: *not a maker of any kind*
Adam: these clamps
Me: I need those
^ this!!!
...handheld sheet metal is a brutal sub-genre...
\m/ (>.
I've got the scars to prove that😏
@@richardgoddard37 Have indeed created several hand-wounds, lol
It's a roofers game your talking about right there
I've got to stop watching these. Every time I end up ordering new tools.
Its fun to have. Just make a plan to use them wisely and regularly.
There are worse problems to have. Adam is so enthusiastic.
I CAN'T STOP BUYING STUF ON AMAZON!
Hope he doesn’t review his favourite brand of Meth, same reason.
Man i really want adam savage to just tell me about cool stuff for me to use to make stuff like all the time.
Just an hour long video of "ooh and this tool! Oh wait but THIS tool! But then I also have this tool... in three sizes."
welcome to the lucrative world of Amazon affiliate links.
Adam makes for a good HSN host.
This is a class of tools we call “cool tools” because you say cool when you see how ingenious and efficient they are.
How may a novice know of other "cool tools" such as this?
You have introduced me to so many tools that I've gone out and bought for my shop, it's not even funny. For that, I am extremely grateful.
Its funny you showed this, because I literally bought one of these 4 months ago walking through the hardware store because I liked the look of it, but I had no idea what it actually did, so thanks for explaining what the weird tool I bought is used for!
I bought a pair years ago because I was walking around the hardware store and knew I needed something to bend some aluminum flashing for a project, and I just happened to see them as we were walking toward the checkout. Still use that same pair, incredibly useful, the one gripe I have with them is the pair I got bows in slightly toward the end so there is a gap of a few thou in the middle, but that's not generally an issue for normal use.
I have unsubscribed from Tested and will no longer support anything that involves Adam Savage because of his horrible and nasty Twitter political comments. I thought Adam was civilized and better than that. What a disgrace. I am now getting rid of my Tested merchandise. What a shame.
I would also like to bring wire looping pliers to everyone's attention. Phenomenal tools for making tiny wire loops for models, jewelry, etc.
I heard of them being called “hog ring” pliers.🤔
Same thing?
Unsubscribed!
Adam, I've loved your work for years! But you had to open your fucking mouth on twitter and start bashing our President. When Obama was our President (perhaps the worst President in history), I still respected the office, not the man. Never before had the government stuck a gun to my head and forced me to buy something (Obamacare) or else. Would have never happened if Chief Justice John Roberts would have followed the Constitution, instead of "interpreting" it.
The saying "get woke, go broke" has merit. Especially when Hollyweird and other "celebrities" start preaching to the American people about politics. Sure everyone has an opinion. But by "getting political", you just pissed off over half of America.
I've always admired your work and creativity. But as a man, I now have no respect for you at all.
I used to think Irwin was the bees knees, but recently I purchased a set of their vise grips. They were made in china and junk. They worked nothing like the old tool. Most of the adjusting nuts could not be turn by hand. The jaws did not line up when closed.
We used these for roofing! Specifically for flashings or large awkward pieces that needed to be bent for valleys or ridges.
Metal roofers best friend.
I just bought copper flashing for an art project. I'm stoked to learn of this tool!
I could literally watch adam talk about the most annoying or toxic thing, and itd be entertaining. Adam, your enthusiasm for stuff like this is completely infectious! You are the geeks geek, and its the best thing on the internet!
I used those a lot during my late teenage years. Sheet metal work for summer job. Those were really difficult to find at a time.
Still are tbh

If you have (or know) a welder, they’re easy enough to make with a regular pair of vise grips and some 3/16 plate. In fact you could use 1/4 plate and make the mouth much larger than the 3” store bought tool.
Thank you Adam.
Like you said, some tools don't stand out, they need recommending.
Irwin is trash. Grip On is the new king of vice grips (or original Petersons).
Ah, No. Irwin is the best.
Get Irwin to protect your parts... The jaws will disintegrate before the nut...
Haha im metal sheet roof worker and i use these all the time for holding metal sheets in place
the holy sheet metal tool
I use these all the time. I modified mine by cutting a deeper grip out of the gut with a cutting wheel. I can make deeper bends with them now.
Tested is having a great 2020 so far! Really well done guys, Adam Savage is the reason I subscribed to the channel many years ago, it is awesome to see him have so much screen time!
I am not a maker, just a Savage fan, but, i love these quick maker vids he does.
Greetings from The Netherlands.
Fun fact: you can MAKE your own with an old pair of vise grips (yard sale tools are great for this) and some steel. Just weld some plates to any vise grips and viola- sheet metal grips😉
Is this video Sponsored by Irwin?
Anyone know where he got that jacket from? I have an Alpha Industries flight jacket, but I wouldn't mind a lighter one for summer
Bouncy Balloon in the google playstore, thanks
that is one of the multitaskerest tools you can have. i've used it for besides-bending-metal more than for its intended purpose.
Exactly. I've had one for years, never used it on sheet metal though.
lol same .. i use mine as welding clamps ( and they're really good for that )
Original Vise Grip Pliers were made in Dewitt, Nebraska. They were much higher quality than the stuff that Irwin makes now.
Living in Nebraska, I remember when that plant shut down... sad day. I've got bunch of the original including those wide lips. Great tools!
Adam Savage is like the Bob Ross of RUclips
I’ve seen these around but never thought about what they were actually for. It all makes sense now!
Same
Same. Been around construction and fabrication most of my life, but I've only ever seen these sitting on a bench rather than in action.
They are clamps really. Often used in welding. Not really designed specially for bending metal but they do a quick job!
I used those quick grip clamps the first time last weekend when I had to make a new side gate after a sudden storm finally killed it (I had been repairing the previous one for the last few years by adding more screws to hold it together! ! lol)
And man did those clamps make a huge difference in helping me make my new gate.
I'm not a woodworker by far, and while it's not perfect, I'm pretty happy how it turned out.
Those are sub-par. For hand bending sheet metal, you want Malco hand seamers.
I'd like to make a miniature english wheel 👌
I going to build one out of an ordinary vise grip!
it also work wonderfully for stretching canvas on frames...grabs the canvas, allows one to pull canvas taunt to staple..and grabs enough material to do a great job!! :)
I've always used these to stretch canvas over frames. They are significantly more expensive than the base model so you can just pick up a pair of those and weld some 10 gauge coupons on the tips
As a woodworker, maker, all around I’ll do it myself because no one seems to take pride in their work when you hire them to do a job. I love these videos. Tyvm Adam. Also I love that at some point in time any maker video shows a bruised fingernail.
Malco makes really great sheet metal tools
The modern style vice grip - also known as the Mole Grip was invented in Britain - made in Wales to be exact. The original vice grip was quite different.
Love you videos all the same. I also have a Bridgeport and hug it daily just as you do!
In the UK almost universally known as "Mole Grips". In 1955 "Mole wrenches" were developed by Thomas Coughtrie who was managing director of MK. Mole and Son in South Wales.
The Americans have a funny almost 'Chinese' attitude to other nations intellectual property :)
I’m going to have to unsubscribe. Adam is way too enthusiastic and awesome and it’s seriously effecting my wallet buying all these new tools 🤣
Adam, The sheet metal tool is in my top 10 recommendations to help makers move from wood and plastic to metal - Good on ya!
Those are most common in the auto body repair world. I learned about them while going to school to get into that profession, but had completely forgotten about them and their usefulness until this video. I'm starting to do diorama and diecast model building and they may come in quite handy down the line.
Duckbills.
My friend at schools dad is a roofing contractor. I saw a pair of these in his tool bag! I also have a Glock 19X, Glock 22, Glock 20SF and a Glock Combat Master by Taran Tactical.
LWRC M6 IA5, Daniel Defense DDM4 V9, Benelli M2. I use them for Three Gun competitions, Adam.
Check out my insta for competition photos! 🇺🇸💯❤️😐💝💝💕
I would take a very small drill bit and drill a hole in that smashed fingernail. The relief you feel will be wonderful and it will heal faster. IMHO
Fun Fact: The original Lightsabers handle was made from a camera flashbulb holder. I learned it from watching Antiques Roadshow.
petapixel.com/2011/07/11/star-wars-lightsabers-were-originally-made-from-camera-parts/
In the UK, vise grips are known as 'Mole grips'... and no, we don't grip moles with them. They were invented back in the 1920s and manufactured by British company, T Mole & Sons Ltd. My father was a welder and, like most welders, he had two sets in his toolbox. One standard and one with steel plates that he had welded into the jaws for that very purpose. I also like Irwin tools but my dad's old Mole grips are irreplacable.
My grandson asked "Are these for gripping moles?" I said "Yep. You grip 'em by the tail". He said "Moles don't have tails". I said "And now you know why".
Adam was praising some Milwaukee(?) Scissors earlier. They are however sure ripoffs of Fiskars Scissors. I know this for a fact, because I was bicycling in Amerikkka in 1986 and was appalled that they had only Fiskars scissors in stores. When I returned to Helsinki I bought some Fiskars stocks and have lived on profits ever since.
Years ago I bought a "doohickey" (or was it a "thingamabob" ?) that let me mount a original design 10-inch Vise Grip to my bench or sawhorse with a screw clamp, that thing was third party "genius level" making. I still have mine and no, Adam, you can't have it. I bought it at a Coast to Coast hardware store (RIP). Among sheet metal tools I also like crimpers and that other crimper made for reducing the diameter of gutter downspouts.
Finally a tool I already have. Nice patina on them from my Mentor / Grandfather. He was the first Maker I knew. We built hundreds of picnic tables all winter (when he wasn't plowing for DOT) for a ton of parks/campgrounds all over the Northeast.
Why is it that I pretty much never agree with anything Adam Savage ever says? Irwin is a garbage company. Don't believe me? Go buy some Irwin paps and you'll know what I'm talking about. Almost nothing they make is of quality. And everything they make, is made better by someone else.
Adam......... please............. Gimme a brake, will you..??
No, seriously. I need one. Right now !!!
I understand the need to save costs, but their new tools are of "meh" quality. They are absolute good-enough for most application, but definitely fails, or have minor (annoying but not always mission critical) defects compared to upper-midrange competitors making similar products when the job demands all that a tool can give and a bit more.
I can't bring myself to buy the Chinese Irwin Vise-grips. Irwin HAS finally figured out how to make a pretty decent copy of the original Pertersen tools made in De-Witt Nebraska and there is nothing wrong with them if you buy the Irwin's that look like the Petersen built ones but beware the 'fast release' or the 'multi-tool' or any other version Irwin slaps the Vise-grip name on that isn't a copy of the originals. Basically watch out for brightly colored chunky bits of plastic that make the 'tool' look like a child's toy transformer.
Hey Adam have you ever thought about doing a Collab with JayzTwoCents? Maybe build some awesome Spaceship PC thing that has some mechanical components on something like that?
You must try the brand « LockJaw ». You set de pressure on the plier then it self ajusting to any thickness. Very quick and useful.
OMG, I have had a pair of those for years and used then for clamping sheet metal for welding. I need a small metal brake. Mind blown. Thanks Adam.
I feel better now that I know that the reason I haven't made so many brilliant things is because I don't have enough tools! (ok, maybe also because I'm a terrible mix of lazy and impatient).
Adam Savage, winner of the Nobel Prize in Shop. [previous winner was Tim, the tool man, Taylor]
How colorful where the expletives when you acquired that bruised middle finger nail Adam ? ;) Another delightful little video.
Come on now, is this what the subject matter has come to ?? Time to reevaluate your video subjects. your slipping here ,need to bring it up a few knotches. where are the good one day builds ????????
Irwin did not invent vice grips they bought the the company, Irwin did not invent the quick clamp they copied them, it is not a hand held metal brake is is a welding clamp, either tell the truth or don't say anything, it makes you sound like a fool, "clearly paid by Irwin be up front about it"
Duck Bills, Lips, Tongs, Seamers, whatever you wanna call'em, these are handy as hell.
Adam is why I subbed to this channel and I'm not saying I'm disinterested in everyone else on this channel but several of the vids put out just weren't for me. As a maker I like new ideas and watching different techniques to do things and lately I feel like it's nothing but Adam and I've watched every vid he is in. It's nice to have more content like this 👌👌👌
could have used this went I handbent a 90 degree on 10 foot of flashing the other day. diy siding repair for the win.
Bending German silver sheet metal for sheath furniture and just grabbed this tool would have never known about it if I didn’t see this video
Best place (other than the links) to find these is a roofing supply store. They’re commonly used to bend copper and aluminum flashing.
I have at least 5 or 6 of them along with a few no names
I also have over 150 pairs of vice grips and i do have a video of them
Wiss makes a better version called a hand seamer...no locking mechanism, just a compound plier and they have them in different sizes.
Ooh, I bet this would be great for snapping off plexiglass, maybe not for big pieces, but if you just need to break off a smallish piece.
Coming from a family of sheetmetal/hvac professionals the Irwin vise grip style is good for many things its not as good a the malco style of hand breaks (hand seamers ) for general bending most specifically the 6 inch style
I made one of these when i was 12, i needed to bend the water break on the mini roof above my French window. Water would drip on the window and through the wood on my floor. I couldn't beat on it, because ungodly noise, so i had my uncle, spot weld two pieces of metal on to a pair of pliers.
If you're an artist and you are stretching canvases, you can also use them if you haven't got a pair canvas stretching pliers. I wrapped mine in tape so as to not damage the fibres. They also have the advantage of locking, a feature which canvas stretchers don't have.
I've got a pair of those that I found, and I honestly had no idea that they were for bending sheet metal. Today I learnt. I do know however comma that clamping your lips into a set of those is what eating ghost pepper wings feels like.
Vice Gripes or Mole Grips to British viewers. I have an ancient pair of Mole Grips that where my father's just about the most useful tool I own.
Keep these coming! i recently received a bunch of tools and im beginning on making a workshop
TIL he used a pair of these on the first episode of Mythbusters to stop the flow of soda in the pop rock exploding stomach myth. The more you know!
wait...why would they use a vise grip to make the sound of a gun cocking instead of, you know, a gun? lol
My boss had a few of these tools. I never saw anyone else with these pliers. I always thought my boss welded them from a set of regular vice grip pliers and some scrap metal since he often made special tools for certain jobs. Had no idea these were a regular tool
ive also added 1/2 nuts on all of my grips to get a tight clamp and more leverage with a wrench and made extra wide benders from vise grips such a utility tool for sure
Would one need to heat aluminum before bending? I've heard it's not as easy to bend as steel.
welding clamps!!??? all shapes and sizes. So easy to adapt standard Mole grips as they are known in UK
Commonly called in the sheet metal fabrication industries.... platypuses or broads
I didn't know this exist and it seem to be the perfect tool to build chassis for old school electronic and any type of box because bends are too close to do something clean with a vise and I couldn't afford to buy a segmented bender
Aren't those called 'duck bills' and used by sheet metal workers (roofs, floors etc)?
Unrelated to video, You should make a static electricity removal tool!
William S Peterson invented and made the vise grip, Irwin didn’t buy them until later
If you look at tools for ducts, gutters and other sheet metal work that’s done quickly you’ll find a lot of good time savers
Ummm... for anyone in the industry, these are called duck bills...
Knife makers also use this tool when they have to heat treat certain kind of steels that have to tempered in metal foil. Those sheets of metal foil are so sharp that is not save to bend them by hand, so they use this to make a metal 'envelope' for the knife steel (which then goes in the heat treating oven)
A pair of those look like they would be good straightening tools too, like when you ding the edge of a toolbox lid and it won't close right.
This is only the second time I have heard the word Foley. The first time was also today. What the heck?
I have about 6 of these at home I used them for a multitude of jobs but never actually new what they where designed for
If you own an old vise grip that is a bit beaten up, weld to pieces of flatstock onto it, and voila...
You can buy these? My dad had one that he welded a couple of plates to. :) Not sure what he used it for, though.
You mentioned this tool by a different brand on an episode of Mythbusters once. I still have yet to buy one.
i have one of those and had no clue that's what it was for!! i have always just used it as a wide clamp for welding!
