Firefighters voice fierce opposition for Los Angeles street modification measure

  • A slew of Los Angeles city officials, cultural organizations and unions are engaged in a hotly contested debate over Measure HLA, which would require the city to undertake a massive street and sidewalk improvement project. Environmental and labor groups are among the largest backers of the resident-led measure, believing that it would increase traffic safety after a record year of pedestrian deaths and improve mobility options. Among the most vehement critics of the measure are local firefighters, who held a press conference Wednesday morning to emphasize that the proposal would make it less safe for emergency vehicles to navigate already congested L.A. streets.

HLA literally tells the city do its job and fulfill its own existing plans already approved years ago. It's just that the city has refused to follow through so far on its obligations for the most part. Opposition to this is nonsense.

That's the key word firefighters are using to scare voters: "Already car congested". The whole purpose for wider sidewalk street walking, bike lanes, bus lanes, pedestrian friendly. Is for people to use other modes of transportation. To keep people out of their cars, to make less traffic. But they prefer to scare you. That they won't make it to you in an emergency. With one less traffic lane. Just imagine the automotive lobby paying the firefighter to scare you against citizens own interest!

KTLA posts TWO videos against Measure HLA instead of balanced reporting. The only counter point they offer is from one random dude given ten seconds to say he likes HLA.
At the end of the first video, the reporter said they were going to post a second video to present the Yes on HLA side. Instead, they double-down with a second video against the measure. Plus, they throw out some false information that the measure will cost the city something. This is not true. The only thing the measure does is force the city to follow the law. It is not introducing any new bike and bus lanes. That plan has already been passed, but the city has failed to follow the laws on the books. Vote Yes on HLA.

No one uses the bike lane becuase it is full of sharp pieces of glass and metal. I never see anyone use bike lane ever. And it slows car traffic both ways. Take some of that space and give it to a more efficient form of transport. It would be good for everyone to have less cars on the streets.

@mariusfacktor3597 You people have been trying to make people's ride public transportation for years and nobody wants it. The only people who want it are those who can't afford a car or get a license. If you force people from being able to drive downtown with less lanes you'll just cause less people to go downtown and hurt downtown businesses further.

Looks like it could cause congestion and slow emergency response. Say there’s a bus in the bus lane and both sides of the road are jammed with traffic, will we still put the blame on emergency response crews for not getting to where they need to be on time? We need more roads for cars to pull over to the side when an emergency vehicle is passing by. If busses were running 24/7 I’d be all for them having their own lane, but they’re not so that’s just a waste of drivable road being unused. It’ll only affect you when you’re waiting for emergency personnel to get to you as quickly as possible and hopefully this will help with the way you choose to vote.

" Say there’s a bus in the bus lane and both sides of the road are jammed with traffic"
There is only one bus. Once that bus is gone the response vehicle is free. If there wasn't a bus lane, they would be stuck there in the same traffic as you. You would be delaying the police in this situation.
" If busses were running 24/7 I’d be all for them having their own lane, but they’re not so that’s just a waste of drivable road being unused"
Busses are not cars. More people can fit on a bus than a car. Cars are a waste of space more than any bus is. Busses move more people than cars
