I don't normally like soprano ukuleles because they're so plucky sounding. But I'm blown away by how warm it sounds, how clearly it intonates and how expressive and gentle it is.
Love the channel and your reviews. I always wanted to learn the ukulele and i bought the octopus based on your recommendation. Although I didn't need another ukulele as I have three now and fingers like sausages so I'm never going to reach your level, as soon as i finished this video i had to jump onto Amazon and pick this up. What a bargain! Thanks again.
Haha, dude, you made me buy one of these! It's really sweet ... love the shape. An easy player that I don't have to fret over. Thanks for all your great reviews.
You aren't the only reviewer disappointed by by its volume. The sound itself actually was pretty sweet. This might be a good candidate for an added electric pick up. Thanks for the review. Thumbs up!
Have to say a sincere thank you for alerting us through FB to the recent Amazon offer on this. £22 inc P&P. Absolute steal. I’m really, REALLY impressed with the quality of the instrument and the accessories (except the strings). I put Aquila supers on it, and it sounds great - particularly for fingerpicking. The neck and fingerboard are truly gorgeous. Have to say though, I’m not loving the feel of the HPL body - do the Martins have that same chunky feel to the body?? Overall a really enjoyable pick-up-and-strum instrument, which gives a great introduction to the Enya brand. Based on this, I’d definitely consider other Enya ukes in the future. Maybe other Enya models will be reviewed here? I’m tempted to experiment with cutting a side port on the top edge - wondering if that would increase the volume..?
The Martins feel remarkably similar really. The issue with volume won't, i dont think be solved by a side port - I geuninely think the bridge is just not on the most resonant part of the top
Yes ! I just got a text message from Amazon that it was delivered! I'm heading home now to get it !. Not a bad wait really I'll let you know 👌But now I want a Bonanza !!! Curse you !! Lol 😒
Thanks for the all the info on the uke .can you you believe it i bought it on Thursday and came yesterday .On amazon with 50% .managed to get it at just under £25.00 with free delivery , Just cant believe it was so cheap and at the price just had to buy it .Great for late night practice were you dont what to disturb the wife from watching love Island. keep up the good work Barry
I bought the pineapple from this line a couple months ago. It has such a warm beautiful tone. I have not heard a soprano with this warm of a sound or with this much sustain. It's my favourite instrument to reach for now.
Scrolling videos and this came up again. After over a year of ownership, as a teacher with enough ukuleles for all my kids to be able to play them, this is by far my favourite even over my solid woods that I bought for myself instead of school. I put worth browns on it and it is so beautiful. And I travel a lot since I live in a different country than my family. I didn’t know I could take the neck off till you mentioned it but that is so helpful for taking it when I travel home.
Thanks Baz for a balanced and pretty fair review here. I bought one of these after the "heads-up" on the FB group. and haven't regretted it one bit. The volume is just right for not disturbing folk in the vicinity - I don't personally find it *overly* quiet, though I'd say this is a "parlour" instrument rather than one for taking to a rowdy uke group! The Enya is wonderfully set-up for the price - on mine, the action is well-nigh perfect, the fingerboard and frets are superb, and the tuners "butter-smooth" - and to my ears the tone is remarkably pleasing, especially once you change the strings (Martin fluorocarbons for me). With some careful mike-placement, the Enya makes a serviceable recording ukulele, and I'm planning to use it on a project in a couple of weeks.
I like them - but then Enya told me they were trying to up their standards and price and these 'ultra cheap' ones were 3rd party sellers. Now I see Enya seem to be knocking out all sorts of ukes for ridiculously low prices and i am feeling like I want to disassociate myself from them. Don't like what they are doing now
GotAUkulele - yes, it’s unfortunate, and we’re seeing this sort of tactic being used increasingly often (as you are more aware than most of us). Shame, as I like this uke 😕
I like this one and I should stress that I am not levelling this at Enya (although they do seem to be price gouging). But I'm just feeling sore from being flat out lied to by another Chinese brand recently.
Bought one based on your review, plus my own needs... though I had to pay 70 euros rather than the bargain basement introductory price some lucky people payed.. I mainly strum and sing, don't have a particularly strong voice. My kmise electro-accoustic is quickly gettng tired.. the scratchy laser etched design parts are simply wearing thin (as well as still making the scratchy sound when playing) Like the tone and playability a lot. Nice gig-bag and goodie bag. The lack of volume is for me a plus, as it matches my voice better, and I have very near neighbours, living in a studio flat.. It's easy enough to mic up for more volume (or amplify the uke... plenty of options available) With the build quality, arched fretboard, quality sound and decent accessory kit, I still think I got a bargain with this! Very tiny gripe, the capo supplied doesn't work very well with the uke. I'm very happy with my buy!
Rocky Koast - I also have a somewhat delicate voice and find I can't hear myself over my Kala tenor when strumming fast. I wondered about a pick up - I have a Mi Si under saddle in my Kala and it works really well - perhaps a bit pricey for this Uke. I thought the tone was excellent - it sounds like a much more expensive uke. What do you reckon about using it for Claw hammer?
honeychurchgipsy6 . Hi. Thanks for the message. I'm really not experienced enough to advise you on wheter it would be ok for claw hammer style.. only just read a little about that recently, never really tried it.. I started with a ukulele under 2 years ago.. I've put a few of my efforts on youtube. Here's 2 that might give you some idea how this uke sounds;
Yup I've ordered mine for practicing with because it'd be quiter. My tenor ukelele is now for beating on as I've got a deering goodtime banjolele on the way.
Just ordered this for £20 off of Amazon UK (thanks to this review!) which seems like a screaming bargain, I love the way it sounds on the video, the resonance especially. I figured it'd be a decent first Uke because I live in a flat with VERY thin walls and i'm a night owl, so if it is quiet and I can practice at night without fear of disturbing then it will be a boon for me.
I own X1 tenor ukulele (taditional double bout shape). Great build and sound too. The most conforable neck I have ever played. It's also not that lound but sustain is awesome and well, the price and everything. I must say I prefer my X1 to my Pono MTD and I have been playing it for like a year now.
If the volume of this was better it would get a stellar score from me. I have an X1 standard soprano on its way to me though. I am convinced the more standard bridge position will change things
I just bought two of these on your recommendation. I'm going to give them away. It might be quiet but it does have a pleasant little tone. Great review. Thanks!
I own one of these, and I find the volume just right for not waking up the family :-) (I actually don't think the Enya is *as* quiet as all that, though I suppose it depends what you are comparing it to!) Furthermore, I find the tone surprisingly pleasing for a sub-£100 ukulele, and with some careful mike-placement, it becomes a very serviceable recording uke. At least, that's how I'm using it...
Thanks for the review! I just bought one yesterday. It should be here by Monday. I was hesitant because I was not familiar with the brand, but with such a unique shape, and that the accessories themselves are worth the $29 price tag, I had to do it. I'll let you know how I like it when I get it. I hope the quiet doesn't bother me too much, although that feature may be preferable in some circumstances. Funnily enough, I was browsing baritone ukuleles when I purchased this. Know anything about the Alvarez RU22B?
Just got it! I definitely see what you mean about it being quiet. Also, the strings cannot keep tension for anything. I will swap them out for martin fluorocarbons, and hopefully if the sound isn't louder, it will be brighter. She is definitely a cute little thing, although I don't think I would pay full price. But she will do for what I intend to use her for: travel!
I'm torn between an enya hpl ukulele and the vtab you reviewed. The volume isn't that large of a problem for me, and the tone of the enya sounds really nice, while the vtab seems like a good all around.
HA thanks for the heads up ! . I love the look of this Uke .I just found this on Amazon for 28.00$ the price is good till August 15. With free shipping i should see it Monday afternoon. How can I go wrong ! ? . I'll be back to let you know ! 👍
Mike Donaghue, I tried that yesterday and Amazon tells me it's currently unavailable at $28 and they don't know when it will be in stock. However, it IS available on Amazon for $95.88 + shipping. Color me disappointed. ;\
Frances Rasmussen i know I saw the same thing later that day. I must have got in right under the wire sorry .At 95$ plus shipping i would have passed on it 😋
I think the 95 dollar one is more like the regular price. Bear in mind what I say in the video - it still gets a good score even at that price. The neck is remarkably good.
Interesting little ‘bugger’ Great review! I immediately went to A--Z and found a number of Enyas but not the round body model - traditional, pineapple but no round. I assume the other sop. body styles are similar in sound (as in quiet).
The soprano is still quiet, but not as quiet as this one. I am convinced the issue here is the bridge being too far down the body and off the vibrating sweet spot. The sopranos are not wake the dead loud, but perfectly respectable. I rather like them.
GotAUkulele Thanks so much for your rapid response! I’ve played double bass professionally for decades and recently got into Kala UBasses (3- 2 acoustic/elec. and a solid body, two are fretless). I always thought Lyon and Healy dealt exclusively in harps. I guess you learn something new every day.
I 'believe' they were one of the original 'camp' ukes - if not THE original. They are credited a lot to Gretsch, but I think LandH were there first

What a great little uke! Amazing what the Chinese are doing with low priced instruments!

Interesting - never had a setup problem with Enya - though I guess it can happen
What about cutting another hole (or two smaller ones) under the main hole, closer to the sound board?
Charlie Skinner i don’t think the hole is the issue. That part of the top that the bridge sits on just doesn’t vibrate very much

Does the nut have to be modified to accommodate "low g" strings?
Flonisha Merritt if the low g is much wider in gauge then yes.
@@GotAUkuleleCheers. Thank you. I don't suppose there is a resource listing low profile "low g" strings...
Not that I know of, but it would almost certainly need to be a wound string
@@GotAUkulele Trail and error its is then. Thank you again. Your review on this uke was very helpful, as I do work odd hours and live in an Apt.
Trial and error indeed - some ukes will need little adjustment if any - some may need quite a bit. Depends on original string gauge compared to the new one, the original uke setup etc.
I saw that there are other instruments in this range, at a similar price. I wonder if they are also this quiet?
Not played any others yet - homing to get the standard soprano on the site soon
That should be interesting! :)
Can't seem to find them in the US. Did they fly off the shelves?
I believe so - though I think they are still on Amazon.com at $95
A lot quieter than my banjo ukulele which I love
This isn’t a banjo though
I don't find it on Amazon.. can anyone send a link?
The links are at the end of the written review. This is just the video.
Drill an inch and 1/4 hole in top volume should improve
Bo Fo sound holes just allow air transfer and don’t create volume. The issue here is vibration transfer from the bridge
I got to it too late :(

Timber becoming scarce on the planet? What planet are you on?
The woods used for many ukuleles are becoming scarce. Hence why there are restrictions on the use of many of them. That planet.
Amazing instrument, especially from a chinese brand and for the price! Shame that the only flaw could be fixed so easily
Keep an eye out for my review of their standard soprano X1 - bridge is in a more natural position. Still I really do quite like this one still
