I’ve had this happen to me. And now the kittens a feral mama brought into my kitchen are my cats. After the second litter, I managed to spay mama and she winters in my basement.
It sounds like you have such a kind and compassionate heart. Giving those kittens a safe home and making sure their mama is cared for, especially during the winter, shows true dedication. It’s amazing how feral cats can become part of our lives in the most unexpected ways. Mama cat is lucky to have found someone like you to watch over her and her little ones. You've made a real difference for them.
Sadly it depends on your situation. I live in a HOA with no pets allowed. My neighbor's don't care and have 15 cats running around outside and inside. HOA won't let Renew the lease but can't kick them out apparently. I love cats but I can't afford food for that many cats and don't want to bring them inside the house and become attached to them. So it's painful honestly. I'm not renewing my lease because the HOA is strict in alot of other ways. The tow cars for all kind of stupid reasons to make money
It sounds like a really difficult and frustrating situation. On one hand, your love for cats makes it hard to see them roaming outside without enough care, but on the other, the HOA rules and limitations make it impossible for you to step in. It’s understandable that this creates a lot of emotional conflict, especially when you don’t want to get too attached but still care about their well-being. It’s unfortunate when HOA regulations feel more like obstacles than support. It’s completely reasonable to seek a home where you can feel more at peace. I hope you find a place where you can feel comfortable and maybe even have the freedom to be around animals in a way that feels right for you. You’re handling a tough situation with a lot of thoughtfulness.
