The whole "muh death threats" angle has lost any meaning after so many people have used it as an excuse to censor criticism, much like calling someone a ist or ism, no body care anymore.
I don't think it's putting politics in video games that is the problem. It's doing it with absolutely no subtlety or creativity. Tons of games have political topics in them but are actually thoughtful, look at something like Fallout New Vegas. It asks in short if liberal democracy is ultimately doomed to nuclear annihiliation, do you keep trying to protect it (NCR) or turn to a more brutal but lasting authoritarian system (Legion)? It's big question in a way that lets the player think about it. I think publishers assume players are too stupid for that now and greenlight projects that fit with that mold.
I think in that example Its not really "politics". Its more to make you question the way you view the System in a more thoughtful view then we normally do. But in dustborn the whole purpose of the game is to push the developers views on the player. Rather then let the player decide for them selves from an unbiased story and an unbiased pov. If that makes sense

They're both politics, but as you say one is a very facile, shallow perspective and the other is much more thoughtful. I think the devs of New Vegas probably thought both options were unsatisfying but the choice was inevitable and wanted players to understand that, especially considering they credited the works of Marx and Engels as instrumental to developing the game.
@ZayPirro Best example is Watchmen comics vs watchmen TV show. Watchmen was always extremely political, but the first book showed everyone being extremely messed up . The new show just said cops bad and the right is evil. That just makes the political angle seem malicious instead of just an interesting story detail.
I look forward to your progress. I'm open to inclusion, but write the character first then decide the race/gender/sexuality/religious beliefs after, unless it's to open the minds of those caught in their culture/beliefs without experiencing the outside world. Also, flipping the switch between mindsets should feel compelling and earned. None of recent entertainment has had that for me in titles like these and I grow bored of waiting for another good title to drop
