Thanks Corbin for finally mentioning that they may need to start looking at the Hitting Coach and the approach with RISP. I love this video because you are also voicing the frustrations us Fans are having.
I don't think we could have hoped for anything better than winning one out of three. Hopefully Bailey will be able to help the young starters make some adjustments. They have to get themselves together this weekend.
Criswell is a perfect 6th starter. For everyone who watched him during ST and first month of the season and was like why would we ever put Whitlock (when we thought his injury was only a few weeks to a month, not the brace procedure) in the rotation when we have this guy, well this is why. He caught a lot of teams off guard but the league ALWAYS adjusts. Time will tell if he has officially turned into a pumpkin or if he’s able to make the adjustment back to being an effective starter. Bello’s biggest problem in the start was his lack of cutter in the early innings. He hit a lefty with it, almost hit another lefty, was a little erratic so Baltimore sat on his sinker and was able to drive the ball. If he wants to reach his potential he needs to own that third pitch. Kutter’s start again hinged on the early innings. I think it was leadoff walk, base hit to LF, fly out, fly out, then had the backup catcher at the plate, 3-1 and threw an uncompetitive fastball head high which he took for a ball to get to Gunnar and Gunnar hit a GS. He shouldn’t be afraid to pitch to the backup catcher. Go after him because if you get him out you avoid seeing their best hitter in a key spot with the bases loaded. I think it’s teachable. There was going to be some regression with him. It is a little alarming that he’s given up a hr in 5/6 starts where he didn’t give up any HRs in his first 6 starts. Something to keep an eye on.
This is exactly what I am talking about with Kutter and Bello, they are making the right adjustments in game, the problem is it’s after damage has been done. It’s a good sign they have been able to do that, I think the next step is being able to do it before you deal the damage
@@redseatradioI don’t think they’ll change their arsenal. They worked too hard this offseason to tweak their deliveries and pitch shapes to scrap it. I also don’t think they can keep doing what they’ve been doing. My guess is they’ll look at pitch usage in specific counts and locations and maybe adjust that. If you take Kutter for instance. Maybe up the splitter usage with 2 strikes on lefties. Maybe up the knuckle curve ball usage and drop down the cutter usage when ahead in the count. Something like that. The sweeper is kind of getting lit up right now so dropping that down a bit might help. I think the team is still evaluating who the core is and what they have. I have said this since the second start of the season, Houck is the highest upside starter in their rotation with the delivery change and getting the splitter in for strikes. They still need to go out and there get someone at the top of their rotation. Whether it’s Corbin Burns or Max Fried they need someone who they can lean for 100+ pitches and even when they don’t have their best stuff they’re getting 6-7 innings out of them. With Houck Bello and Crawford they have some pieces but their career high for innings are 106, 157, and 129. It’s hard for me to believe they’re all going to go 180 this season and pitch effectively. A year from now they should be more of a sure thing for the team if they continue their trajectory
One of the good things about Corbin is that he doesn't just identify a trend (which is where most people stop), he identifies the probable causes and possible solutions. It seems like youth and their learning on-the-job is a common theme with the team, now with the pitching staff as well as the position players. The possible silver lining is that with good coaching they might get better with more experience as the season progresses, and even more probably will be better in future seasons. Hey, I'm so old (think Methuselah) that I'm used to waiting til next year.
Yep, lots of frustrations right now. No doubt. On the bright side Fitts had a perfect game going for Wooster and ended up with a 7 inning one hitter. Not bad. I am looking forward to these young pitchers coming aboard when ready.
Agree about Bello, Houck is their Ace, concerned about Crawford and Pivetta? Winning one in Baltimore was my expectation. The good news is, these guys don’t quit and are still fun to watch as long as you measure your expectations. Thanks for the reports Corbin. 100% the Red Sox are Ground Hog Day, we are watching the same movie every night, and their ridiculous “Full Throttle “ off season is the cause for this mediocrity.
You are a real optimist Corbin. Look at the Sox stats this year. They can’t, hit for average or power either. We started out well, however we are now the team I expected us to be. This is mostly a team of misfits. Rookies trying to make it with outcast veterans. Devars is a star but who else do we have?
I think it's normal to see this regression. The key is can they recover. I'll be positive and say yes. It appears Kutter and Bello both had one bad inning. If they can take May and learn from it then the upside is good. Also I'd rather have the regression now than in July or August. Let's hope.
Our pitchers are still young for the most part, Bello is still learning and this is Crawford 's first time working as a starter. Criswell same. Houck right now is the only one pitching lights out. Keller may be able to help, as he has starting experience, but needs to get back on track. At this point we need to adjust and I think Bailey is equipped to get these guys on track. Really, this may be the only option, as starters are struggling league wide and injuries are also a league wide issue. Trades will be competitive. So I think adjustments are our best option. Thanks Corbin for the insight 👍
I think you’re right experience is a huge problem with this pitching staff. Like you said andrew Bailey needs to do something different and quick or else we’ll be in the same situation as the last two years. Good video Corbin
I think it's hard to write them off after two months. I think we need to see how we do through June and then you will have a much better idea. They way over preformed in April so we had to expect a fall off. I think part of the issue with the pitching is if we get behind the offense can't bring us back. We've only came back from down 3 once and down 2 once and come back from down by 1 seven times so if we get down by 2 it's largely over and over 3 it is over. We need a little better pitching but the hitting is way under performing and I think that's currently a bigger issue.
Yeah I think saying the Offense overall has been the biggest problem this season is absolutely the right statement, my biggest fear is over the last 2 years we saw virtually the same thing where the offense would suck and pitching would rock and then vise versa the whole way. That’s sort of my point in saying it’s like watching the same movie
@@redseatradio Oh I wasn't disagreeing. I think last year it was like 90% offense and the pitching was hurting us but this year our offense really has never gotten on track. Offensively we chase WAY too much and we are TERRIBLE at hitting with RISP idk why our offense is so far off from last year other than more injuries/turnover but it's still seems like something isn't clicking. I don't know I have ever seen us chase so much although this is maybe the youngest we've been in a long time. In the end everyone just needs to be better and they probably will but it feels like everyone is down at the same time.
In the 3rd game truthfully when Bello gave up 3 in the first I thought for sure we were going to see another wipe out. The young man came through however over the next 4. He gave them the chance to come back...That's what he's supposed to do. Thank goodness you didn't mention Pivetta! In my mind this is exactly what you said it was and that's growing pains. Unfortunately there's no easy fix, trading for pitching at this point will only force more holes in a lineup that's weak for the same exact reason! Growing pains.
The surprise stat for me was David Hamilton, 2nd on the team in steals with 8. Impressive because a) he's only got 83 at bats, and b) after Jarren Duran (the team steals leader), you've also got Cedanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu as speedsters on the team playing full time
Corbin i said on one of the live Talk you did, that i was getting really concerned with Crawford, that time he was losing a lot of control and this is the problem with Crawford and on top of that is a young team with no Big Stars that can help and guide this young core.
I think its philosophy but philosophy is instilled in the hitting coach. You’re getting decent production from your top guys but a lot of times you have to rely on the lower part of your order and they have not done a great job with preventing strikeouts and playing situational baseball. Injuries may ravage our team but strikeouts are outrageous and it’s a next man up team at this point
Sure but why do you think they are striking out a lot? It may have something to do with the fact that the 2 players who dont strikeout a lot are sitting on the IL forcing players who do have more swing and miss in their game to get more ABs no?
Here's to defeating the Tigers tonight. Its now time for Joe's MLB first round draft picks for the Redsox. I am going with the lefty wonder from Duke University Jonathan Santucci or perhaps right hander Brody Brecht of Iowa. I hope Breslow takes pitching a plenty and often in this draft. I am looking forward with optimism !!!!! Go Redsox !!!!
I’m more worried about timely hitting. O’Neill’s HR/RBI record reflects what everyone is going through. There’s a lot of personal success. I’m glad Devers is hitting. But the low RBI’s show inexperience & inability to adjust their plate approach. Maybe it has something to do w/ hitting coach. Maybe there r too many poor players scraped up to fill holes. How much better would we be w/ Giolito, Story, Casas, Yoshida…?
It's gotta be frustrating for Youklis, a guy who probably never swung at a first pitch, watching it time after time.maybe its pace of play rules(just kidding). Love your passion kid
It's a young team. I'm okay with that and willing to be patient. I'm pulling for all of them! Wong is really coming into his own and I think is moving into the upper echelon of MLB catchers. Is there any catcher who is more athletic? PS- Easy does it with the frustration. How long did the O's take to put this together? They were literally a laughingstock for years. For the Sox to be playing .500 ball with all these young guys- and more on the way- is amazing. Cora is just a fantastic manager and gets guys to believe in themselves. It's going to be an up-and-down year but let's pull for the young guys and help build their confidence, not tear them down.
Bad stretch yes …take each pitcher in the rotation and look at the numbers in total to this point in the season vs pre season expectations and clearly this isn’t the issue for this team …it’s the offense
I think it’s partially that right, a big reason the bailey effect worked so well is because it surprised everyone, now it’s a bit different and he has to do it again
I think you are too harsh on the RS pitching staff, but you were more accurate about their inability to hit with runners in scoring position. You correctly point out their struggles against better pitching. The RS hitters are just too left-handed with Hamilton at shortstop. One thing that you missed about Hamilton is his blazing speed. Duran+Hamilton gives the RS a different kind of weapon. You don't get heard the opponent's announcers, but it is incredibly stranger to heard other announcers worry about the RS speed. Breslow has more ready MLB proscepts to trade at the trade deadline than last the few years. Will Breslow make trades for their future regardless of their status. The Verdugo + Christian Vasquez trades are paying dividends now.
Not sure it’s too harsh to just flat point out the fact that in every mesurable category they have been significantly worse this month than they were last month though
refsnyder is doing well so far. do you think red sox will trade him bundle with perhaps oneil/jensen on a perhaps multiple team trade scenario and get some good return if red sox sink? refsnyder in my opinion is not a long term red sox solution
Corbin …they scored one run yesterday they didn’t lose because of pitching. Kutter had one bad inning…he actually gutted it out and gave them 6 innings..he has a 3.34 Era…they have vastly exceeded expectations…for example Tanner went from at best expectations a 5 starter maybe 🤔 to cy young candidate…the problem is your 3-4-5 in your line up went down and you have not done anything to solve that problem
Not sure you can solely blame the offense right now. No they aren’t doing well either but Kutter’s ERA is more of a reflection of how good he was in April than what he has been doing this year. Looking at it over half of his starts so far this season have been to the tune of an ERA north of 5, everyone in this rotation outside of Houck is in a similar boat, it’s clearly becoming a trend
@@redseatradio the pitching is the sole reason they have been able to maintain a.500 record. They are not going to be able to remain relevant in the wild card if they do not add some bats period fast! 💨
The schedule is going to get more difficult in the coming weeks. This is where we see what they are made of. They could easily tank. I do not expect them to dominate, but the team needs to make the adjustments and find ways to win against good teams. Quite frankly Breslow should come up with something better than Brad Keller as a response to the loss of Whitlock. The Sox need to add another starter who can not only compete but mentor the younger pitchers helping them to make the required adjustments without the wheels falling off.
Eh idk if it is going to be exponentially harder in June than it was in May, a majority of the competition you are facing is in a similar situation standing wise and performance wise as The Sox so I actually think it could end up being an entertaining month, the next week or so though is going to be absolutely brutal
@@redseatradio between now and the all star break they have 3 against the Phillies, 6 against the Yankees, 2 against Atlanta (albeit with Acuna). Those teams are inarguably better than the Sox. Then there are teams that are at the same level or a bit better than the Sox: 4 against Detroit, 3 against the Padres, 3 against the Royals. Thankfully there are series against the White Sox and Marlins mixed in.
Not really. Every pitcher hates teams bunting on them. On top of that he didn’t yell at anybody he was talking to himself. In fact the only embarrassing thing about that was that the Milwaukee first baseman coach who doesn’t even play for the team and is a 50 year old man decided to back at Chris for talking to himself. Honestly thinking showing fire is embarrassing is a really brutal take from you especially if you actually watched what happened.
Corbin - it has nothing to do with the starters pitching more or getting more experience The staff is what it is / A Bad Staff Bello is the only one that’s young Crawford has almost 50 Ml starts with almost 4 years of Minor Leagud Starting Experience Criswell was basically acquired off scrap heap Pivetta now has 3 yrs of starting experience with over 70 starts They are what the back of the baseball card saids they are in Bello case a young inexperienced pitcher who needs to be a 4 right now on a good staff Crawford is a AAAA starter and nothing more then a #5 Pivetta is wildly inconsistent and nothing more than a #4 starter. The Sox knew what their issues were Pitching - Breslow said if Cora said it but what did ownership do what did Breslow do Nothing Imaga Stroman Montgomery Snell were all available & ownership did not spend Burnes Cease could have been acquired & Bredlow after saying we need to improve staff by any means necessary even if it means trading young talent then we need to do that and he did nothing You came on and said they need to trade for Kirby or they need to sign Jordan so you can’t go on today and say I think this staff is good just young and inconsistent. Clarke Schmidt George Kirby Ranger Suarez all are just as young with similar amount of Games Started and are far better. You are too young to remember the last successful home grown starter - Jon Lester and by his 3rd year in league he was a 15 game winner with a mid 3 era. So it’s not because they’re young not because they need more seasoning under Bailey it’s because Crawford & Pivetta are just BAD pitchers otherwise you would not have called for them to sign Jordan or trade for Kirby of Pablo Lopez. Its ok John Henry is not going to get mad at you (trust me he don’t care anymore) you can say it the Red Sox have a pitching problem because Criswell Crawford & Pivetta are just bad Bello is slotted as a # 2 starter and that’s unfair to him and that JH don’t care he needs to spend more money on his trophy wife & Breslow is in over his head and lied to Red Sox fans about improving this staff
Chris martin is such a crybaby. Against Milwaukee, he allows 0 runs in his only inning, and starts a fight because 2 Brewers bunted off him. He should be happy Brewers are giving him easy outs!!! In his interview, he says he's upset because this is a "swing the bat" league. Well, look at what happened tonight when they "swung the bat"
The whole team is struggling. Inconsistent pitching and hitting. Along with the fact that they should not have traded Chris Sale. I knew the moment that he was traded that he would flourish in Atlanta where he's part of a solid team. He's going to be the comback player of the year. And they're shopping Jansen why. To get a pair of do nothing prospects? Nobody fears the Red Sox and unless things change it's looking like our glory days are far behind us.

Thankfully there are series against the White Sox and Marlins mixed in.
chris martin getting angry at opposing team bunting? That's embarassing.
@@redseatradio If I was the first base coach, I would have done the same thing. Bunting is part of the game.
What did you expect?????
i explain that in the video
Corbin - it has nothing to do with the starters pitching more or getting more experience
The staff is what it is / A Bad Staff
Bello is the only one that’s young
Crawford has almost 50 Ml starts with almost 4 years of Minor Leagud Starting Experience
Criswell was basically acquired off scrap heap
Pivetta now has 3 yrs of starting experience with over 70 starts
They are what the back of the baseball card saids they are in Bello case a young inexperienced pitcher who needs to be a 4 right now on a good staff
Crawford is a AAAA starter and nothing more then a #5
Pivetta is wildly inconsistent and nothing more than a #4 starter.
The Sox knew what their issues were Pitching - Breslow said if Cora said it but what did ownership do what did Breslow do Nothing
Imaga Stroman Montgomery Snell were all available & ownership did not spend
Burnes Cease could have been acquired & Bredlow after saying we need to improve staff by any means necessary even if it means trading young talent then we need to do that and he did nothing
You came on and said they need to trade for Kirby or they need to sign Jordan so you can’t go on today and say I think this staff is good just young and inconsistent.
LAZINESS! Players NOT being coached to be better...
Yes sent Crawford and cooper to AAA n trade nick poveta
And pitch who?
