This lesson focuses on the ability to play natural harmonics at the 12th, 7th and 5th frets. Playing a harmonic correctly produces a beautiful bell like sound that is used frequently in all styles of music. It is also very useful for tuning the guitar accurately. We will do 3 exercises then a short etude that uses just harmonics. A FREE PDF download of this lesson is available at www.GuitarLesso.... There you will also find many other FREE video guitar lessons updated daily. My ability to continue these FREE lessons depends entirely on your support at the main site. THANKS!!
Nobody talking about how for 2009 the camera quality is poppin
I just now realized it hahaha
Fr a 720p camera I’m 2009!? Damn Carl
Camera is good but also environment is good , there is no background so its easy to focus on him
and lighting is also good for 2009
I wonder what he looks like now
not that impressive to me tbh. There were better not too pricey cameras at the time
Thanks for actually explaining what you are showing instead of simply demonstrating it and leaving us to figure out what the hell is going on. Very useful for a raw beginner (me).
idk you?
Exactly all those useless tutorials before this
You probably won't reply considering this is 6 years old but how is your guitar playing going?

@T GAY I don't think so, there are different people who learn at various paces and respond to different wording. He is a good teacher!

truman thanks this guy talks too much lmao
@@Suveramort you idiot he was just trying to explain it as clear as possible
I'VE BEEN LEARNING A FEW VAN HALEN SONGS AND THIS EXPLAINS THE HARMONICS VERY NICELY. MANY THANKS.

Damn can't believe this is 11 years old. I remember watching this in 2011 when i first started playing guitar. 9 years later and im still trying to figure out how to play harmonics lol
pretty sad
@@es2kaaay908 it’s a joke dude
Pinch harmonics scare me 😳
@Shotz_OW you ca. Learn them in a day if you practice
@@omithehomi8568 no he's got a point, only been playing 3 months and I can play nat harmonics just fine, pinches sound weird to do though

Lovely Video clip! Sorry for butting in, I am interested in your opinion. Have you ever tried - Rozardner Stopping Sounds Reality (Sure I saw it on Google)? It is a great one off guide for how to instantly slow down music by software without the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my cooworker at very last got amazing success with it.
The fact that this is the top comment is awesome :) Apparently guitarists are gamers :D

I love the sound of natural harmonics, on both guitar AND the bass. Especially with a chorus effect, they can sound very expressive and beautiful, and add a lot to a ballad.
Excellent job at explaining in detail...for beginners this is much better than someone showing us how they can do it easily...but not actually breaking it down. Great teaching! Well done.
10 years later I find your video! I have been trying to learn how to play these natural harmonics for about 3 years now. Not every day of course but from time to time the subject would come up and I would look for a video to show to properly play these darn things. I had basically given up since what the other guys were saying and doing really made no sense, then tonight I was playing along with Def Leppard and their Switch 625 and Steve Clarks hits that natural harmonic on the 4th fret. Normally I just play the Ab and not bother trying to do the harmonic thing he does, but tonight I decided to give it one more shot and look on You Tube and see if there was just one person out there who could make it make sense, and I found your video, literally within 3 minutes I was playing natural harmonics - THANK YOU!!! I see now how "simple" they are to do but the way the other guys were teaching how to play them made no sense to me and I have to say their's even sounded different. Anyway, Im subbing to your channel and thanks again!!
There is a really strong harmonic on the 19 fret!
Its the same ratio as the 7th fret
It's the same harmonic as the 7th fret
yeah, it is
I learnt about the three main harmonics in my physics class UwU
Thank you so much Michael, that really makes me feel good. Hope I can continue to help!! Carl.. :)
Thanks so much! This was super helpful.
You actually gave an in-depth explanation and demonstrated how to do it instead of just telling me what it was
almost sounded like sweet child of mine til the end lol

I saw this comment and I thought oh no this can’t be good
Thank you. My actual teacher tried to explain but i didn't get it. I watch your video and got it first try. You are a great teacher for a beginner like me
Bruh. You mean to be telling me. The reason all my harmonic attempts (as someone who doesnt really practise that kinda stuff - I just play songs by tabs or watching others play) havent worked.. is because I've automatically assumed or skipped over the part where you actually hold the string OVER THE PROPER FRET! rather then the space between.. no wonder my attempts come out as muted notes.
Dude thanks so much!!! I really needed this video
Thanks man, now I finally understand how to play harmonics! The best lesson I've found so far and in HD!
it's hard for a drummer to do this!! >
Lol what? Drums don't have strings x.x or I'm assuming you're a drummer learning guitar?
yeah im a drummer learning guitar :(
Iskandar Drumzz Ah, I know how you feel! Except the other way around (guitarist learning drums). Damn those double pedals, oh how my lack of ability to heel-toe with my left foot saddens me so.
Iskandar Drumzz I also can't blast-beat very well haha especially with my left hand. Maybe we can help each other out.
haha it's easy if you train more and more :D
Omg! I finally got it!!! Just did my first harmonica EVER thanks to this vid. I’ve tried for weeks!!
Youve just explained Harmonics on guitar absolutely perfect. I can now understand and play them.
Ty my friend.
If only we had 3 hands. 1 for the chord, another for the harmonics, and a third for plucking the string.
zombiedude347 it’s called a loop pedal. 😉
THANKS BRO. I GOT TO WORK ON THIS A LITTLE MORE.
Thank you so much for this!! I might be fill-in for a hardcore band that uses these a lot and almost ever used them. its odd having to learn something again , but I knew what video I was looking for and I definitely found it. basic and straight forward ways pf learning them quickly why having fun with the little parts that you made.
Thanks man good lesson on natural harmonics
Thank you so much omg I was watching a polyphia tutorial and I had no idea where the high pitch was coming from skdkfk this was so helpful since it’s the first time I’ve ever heard of harmonics
Bro I was in the exact same situation with goat and goose, Tim just said “natural harmonic on 777” and o had no idea what he did
i wanna know who came up with this technique.....so i can fight them.
I'm new to Natural harmonics and this was really helpful thanks for it :)
I have noticed that it is a lot easier to tune guitars when I use natural harmonics;
it is much easier to notice if two strings sound out of tune relative to each other when I play natural harmonics on both of those strings.
I'm glad you enjoy playing it! I will have more stuff coming soon..Thanks!!
Thank-you so much I like the way u explain things its so easy to understand
I love this! Got it third try, love that harmonic sound
Your videos have taught me so much! Thank you so much for being active and helpful (:
Make an mp3 out of that harmonic étude you made. It's beautiful
Thank you for the video, Im going to start working on harmonics as soon as i get home!
oh i get it now, ur alot better than the teacher i got now, i actually know what ur talking about, is stead of gawking aimlessly at my guitar :) 5*'s and subscribed xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Knowing how to play a harmonic is very important to intonate a guitar.
I was doing it wrong until I saw this vid. Thankyou !
@MrBaselT Oh definitely, it works on all guitars including acoustics and even bass guitars. :)
Excellent tutorial, thanks so much for this, seen some guitarist's do it and really wondered how and this is the way to go! Brilliant.
such a beautiful sound, and now i've made it for the first time. thank you :)
That sounds beautiful. thanks you sir.
Best guitar teacher ever
i've searched countless videos on this subject and finally, i can do it!! i dunno how you did it, but somehow, you got thu to me!
thank you so much!!! finally, did my first harmonic.
Learned a ton in less than nine minutes!
I'm literally learning this at 11:30 watching you makes me sleepy lol. Relaxing
I figured out what I was doing wrong! I had my finger placed in the exact middle of the fret instead of the bar in between both frets!
When he started doing the harmonics I kept thinking of Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
That's why I'm here 😬😂😂

Thank you soo much! Took me forever to understand how it's possible for a note on the 7th fret to sound higher than a note on the 12th fret
@sblopez08 Hey thanks for watching! The pickups are a Dimarzio Fast Track 2, Pro Track and Chopper. Cheers! Carl.
really awsome man ;) i was starting to think there was some problem with my strings, i couldn't make it sound any harmonics at all =P
cheers!
What you are doing is cutting the string into sections. So if you do it in the middle, the string vibrates in two sections, from the center to each end. If at the quater point, it vibrates in 4 sections, at a pitch that it would be if the string were 4 equal lengths. So you're cutting the string into equal sections of length thus getting much higher pitches. Just saw some comments wondering how it works.
thank you so much
this helped me a lot with my self tutoring
finally! Best explanation ever. THANK U!

The most fascinating thing for me is how the sound remains the same even after taking my fingers off, when playing a fret normally, the note kind of changes if I take my finger off

Is this supposed to work for other frets such as the fourth fret? You did it in your panama by van halen tutorial, so I was just wondering how you do it on other frets, whether there is a certain spot or any useful tips.
