@@joax5955 back when I still trained traditional martial arts (10 years and then moved on to muy thai and boxing) the idea they explained to me was that it helps you breath during attacks and demoralize your opponent. For some people yelling can stun them or make them hesitate during a fight.

When they say the name to the move it is a Mantra. They are channeling the energy they have practiced thousands of time and consistently doing it the same way to produce the same effect or even greater due to the situations effect as well. Words have power and the louder and bolder they are said the more power they ring with. You could say the entire energy blast is more from their Mantra than the physical motion due to the words being closing to the energy they are working with than the physical which would be the Mudra but it all works together wholistically to produce the most consistent and largest effect outward from the individual.

I’m happy Toriyama-sensei decided to use auras and physical ki in his work because it’s just so cool to imagine manifesting spirit energy. It changed how martial artists focus energy fl a degree though historically and traditionally the Chinese and Japanese have already depicted such things in art but not the same way whatsoever. Also chanting the moves are like a Mantra and MUDRA.

In real martial arts, yelling as you perform a strike (known as a "ki-ai") does help focus your energy to strengthen the attack, at least in theory. I suppose yelling attack names might be meant as a more dramatic representation of this. Also why characters yell while powering up or transforming.
in GT: i belive they say that they chant their moves names inorder to make the moves more powerful, sort of like chanting a spell before casting it. i know this isnt canon but its my headcanon lol. also i forgot if you mentioned these in the video but some other cool ki facts: Ki gets stronger when training your mind, when increasing your fighting capabilities such as martial arts, and when physically training your body. you can also learn "ki control" to be able to suppress your own power aswell as increase it to "full power" although roshi dosent use ki control to change his power, he infuses his muscles with his ki making them bigger, raising his overall powerlevel as seen versus tien and oozaru goku, i think this may be similar to that bulked up form of ssj1 and as ive understood it, you can put all of your ki into your leg for an incredible kick such as piccolo used versus frieza, and you can take your ki away from your body/aura to put it around things to make them levitate, or you can spread it around the area as an extension of yourself inorder to properly feel out where for example an opponent is, such as when gohan fought lavender.(this is also similar to when meditating as then you have a simpler time senseing your surroundings.) also if you dont have your ki inside of your body, taking a hit will be detrimental compared to when having it filled with ki. seeing as when goku got blasted in the back by friezas minion when in god form and got hurt really bad, but if he wouldve been for example powering up at that moment, the blast wouldve simply bounced off of his aura. some who lack ki, cant even approach someone who has their ki spread around them as it seems like a brick wall!(source; goku first kamehameha versus jiren, and the filler fight of satans wrestling fighter going after cell) yes i am an incredible DB geek
As someone studying Japanese I have to take small objection to your definition of the word Ki. 気 (ki) is an extremely versatile word, most literally meaning "life," or "energy," but also encompassing the meaning of "spirit," and even "air." It's a very nebulous concept, and the word is used to describe multiple things depending on the context (basically all of Japanese is like this), but most accurately it could be referred to as "life force," or "life energy," not really something so specific as a "willingness to fight." This doesn't only apply to living things, everything that exists has Ki; though it might be more correct to say everything that exists _is_ Ki. Ki can also be used as a word for someone's feelings, mood, or intentions, such as the word 気分 (kibun) which literally means mood or feeling. So, Ki itself doesn't innately take on any kind of attribute. You could say "His ki (mood) is filled with fighting spirit," (he looks ready to fight) or "He is overflowing with Ki" (He looks energetic / filled with energy). If Ki is simply energy, then Gen Ki is much more specifically energy that comes from living things. There is nothing to imply that the energy drawn from the genki dama is explicitly different from any other Ki, though we know from the series that the genki dama created on earth holds the thoughts and feelings of all those it came from (which relates fluidly back to Ki's encompassing meanings), there is no evidence to imply that all Ki does not technically exhibit these features -- naturally, it would be assumed that Goku's Ki contains his hopes and wishes just as the genki dama contained that of the people on Earth.
In the Italian dub Ki is referred as Aura. Which is interesting because of course it is almost a synonim, ( An atmosphere or energy emitted by a person) but in Latin the root of the word Aurum means “Golden” which is the color of a Super Saiyan’s Ki.
The way I always interpreted the whole ‘ki vs god ki’ thing, is that smaller amounts of god ki can equal higher amounts of ki, so basically it’s more concentrated. For example, if we were to assign numbers to them, 10 God Ki is equal to 100 Ki, so the mortals without God Ki, just have high enough amounts of Ki to rival/surpass the ones with God Ki.
Hey I really enjoyed the concept of this video it was really informative and interesting, while were on this topic I was wondering if you could do a video on good vs evil ki. I think it would be interesting to see if there are differences in their properties or why some characters have evil looking auras in the first place, it's always interesting how goku can sometimes tell how evil a character is by feeling said ki. And overall can one be more powerful than the other depending on whether or not the character is more good or evil than the other
It’s explained that the saying of the move is to help control it. They have to do the certain hand move ya to bring forth the energy. Ka - The user brings his hands forward and aligns the base of the palms. Me - The hands are brought down to the dominant side of the users body by the waist. Ha - The user draws apart their hands and shape them into a form mimicking holding a sphere. Me - The user draws out the ki they have been moving through their body up to this point to materialize it into their palms Ha - The user aims at their target realigns the base of their palms and pulls back their fingers while pushing forward their arms forcing the energy forward. Obviously they can become good enough to not have to say it but chances are in a fight sometimes you need the extra concentration.

At first i thought his Golden form was him using God ki. It'd actually make pretty much sense if it was since he was able to overpower even a SSB Goku in that form.
I think ki at its simplest just comes down to physics. Kinetic energy is the exertion of potential energy, and potential energy is the energy you are capable of using. When people exert effort or an object is in motion, they are using kinetic energy because they are now using the energy they possess in action, and dragon ball is just the overexaggerated version of that. Energy has 3 forms in DB such as physical energy (physical strength, ki blast/release, speed, agility, durability, technique), mental energy (ki suppression, controlling and condensing ki, telekinesis, willpower), and spiritual energy (The alignment your energy is more likely to be used for; for good or malicious intent). Even Hakai and UI are just the individualized version of mental and physical energy. Dragon ball isn't that complex when you realize it's just basic functions thrown out of proportion.
In “All You Need is Kill,” the author Hiroshi Sakurazaka says that the purpose of a kiai is to push your body past it’s natural inclination to not over dangerously exert yourself. Don’t know what that’s based in but I can see it.
Also in the 80's movie "Last Dragon" Bruce Leeroy kind of goes Super Saiyin at the end and you see his ki aura around him and he finally beats the villain. They called it the power of the glow and the aura is yellow. I wonder if Toriyama got the SSJ idea from that?

That doesn't mean I'm asking if you're having a laugh, it comes from the medieval concept of the four humors (sometimes five) these elemental (as in fire, air, water, earth) vapors that affect your body. I find it funny that while these two cultures are literally as far apart as possible they still have or had similar ideas on the nature of the natural world.
Great review as always, but not sure if you heard of popular Wuxia Novels/Film Series by Jin Yong 1955-1972. His stories like dragonball and most shounen manga heavily emphasizes on ki control, martial arts, and character development overtime. Personally, I feel he is like the Chinese founder of the Shounen Genre.
If you were to go into why they say the name of their moves, you could say that it's also how the move is activated/controlled or is stronger/enhanced when you call out the name of the move.
Well geekdom you are absolutely right that most people can not see chi and it is indeed because you need to develop your third eye. I have only been able to see my own ki once. So I can assure you that it is possible. Further more the way that toriyama actually gives chi form and color in the series is not very different from the reality. You have gotta do a video discussing all the similarities between Dragon Ball and Star Wars If I understand this correctly, Palpatines Force Lightning is the same thing as a Ki blast/wave because it's a physical representation of the Force or Ki in this case. Which means someone could use a Ki blade/sword to combat a lightsaber considering both are made of plasma and require the manipulation of the Force/Ki in order to wield. Unless Disney changed the canon on how lightsabers work lol

Wish they went into explaining how Ki worked further down the series, the advantages and even disadvantages of it. How it changes depending on the user. How it increases when the person is training, what causes the change of Ki went getting a power up etc.
It would be interesting to see if different ki colours have different meanings. Take lightsaber colours for example: blue represents combat ability, green represents force ability, red represents corruption and hatred etc etc.
No they wouldn't. They are purely stylistic. But the general trend by the anime seems to be yellow for heat and explosions(standard, quick blasts usually). Blue for force(which may explode). And red is the stronger ones. The rest are usually for villains. Darker colors like purple and black ect. Sometimes dark red. But even geekdom said, that's not toriyamas idea or anything. And there's exceptions like the kikoho being yellow. And Goku doing a quick bunch of blue blasts in a movie. Toriyamas did make the blue and red ssg forms have meaning tho
Never expected you to mention Ryu’s Hadoken and other characters. I was going to ask that very question on Twitter as to why they announce the name of their ki attacks before using it. I always thought of it as these characters calling on their techniques as if ‘calling out’ to them.

I don't know why people hated the midicholorian thing. I always hear people say that the "midichlorians created the force" or "midichlorians are the force". That isn't what was stated in The Phantom Menace or any Star Wars material. The Force is it's own thing, it's an energy field that binds everything together and has a will of its own. Midichlorians are simply the embassadors that allow for communication and connection between living things and the force. They translate the will of the force to people. They are the middle man or medium that allows Jedi and Sith to connect with and use the force. That's all they are.
I think it's that it's people having it biologically. Your connection to the force is a biological thing determined by a genetic amount of microbes. Not very mystical. Not very much a spirit ect. There was a sort of lineage thing but there was also a spirit thing. The force is strong with my family as Luke said could just mean his family was deep in it. It sounds more like a gift. It wasn't as obvious of a genetic connection. Like Jesus and god. Son of God yeah. But you wouldn't assume it was genetic powers. I'm indifferent to it tho. Awhile I heard an explanation I liked about it but I forgot it by now. So I'm back to indifferent.

Otherwise anyone could be a force-sensitive and then all of a sudden the Jedi and Sith aren't special anymore. It's also important to note that every living creature has midichlorians to some degree. It's just force-sensitives have many more midichlorians compared to the average living being. And who is to say that the force itself doesn't will certain beings to have more midichlorians, to be force-sensitive for reasons we don't understand? There is still a mystical element to it, it's just the midichlorians expand on the relationship between living things and the force. Having a biological or physical aspect to it doesn't take away from the mystical view of the force in my opinion. To use a Biblical example as you did, remember that the Bible teaches that even in Heaven people are given glorified bodies. So the physical/biological side of things, is still presented in many writings as a necessary part of having a complete existence.

I've done alot of Martial Arts for 2 years next month I'm gonna be a Red Belt Month's later I'll be a Black Belt. I've done alot of Meditation since i was 12 years old. What I love about The DB Franchise series? Answer Martial Arts. Just like how Batman uses his Martial Arts to battle his opponents. In DB how do they battle the bad guy's answer Martial Arts. My Martial Arts class taught me alot of techniques, life lessons, calm, strength, control, wisdom, gratitude, patients, and so much more. It was amazing. BTW I learned something new today.
The power of yelling a move only works for the Kamehameha because its a verbal build up, all the other moves its for the show. To understand this go where no one can hear you and pretend to do the move twice. Once with no sound and the other yelling. The amount of energy you can draw up even just pretending will be drastically different yelling.

In real martial arts, yelling as you perform a strike (known as a "ki-ai") does help focus your energy to strengthen the attack, at least in theory. I suppose yelling attack names might be meant as a more dramatic representation of this. Also why characters yell while powering up or transforming.

in GT: i belive they say that they chant their moves names inorder to make the moves more powerful, sort of like chanting a spell before casting it.

Ki gets stronger when training your mind, when increasing your fighting capabilities such as martial arts, and when physically training your body.
you can also learn "ki control" to be able to suppress your own power aswell as increase it to "full power"
although roshi dosent use ki control to change his power, he infuses his muscles with his ki making them bigger, raising his overall powerlevel as seen versus tien and oozaru goku, i think this may be similar to that bulked up form of ssj1
and as ive understood it, you can put all of your ki into your leg for an incredible kick such as piccolo used versus frieza, and you can take your ki away from your body/aura to put it around things to make them levitate, or you can spread it around the area as an extension of yourself inorder to properly feel out where for example an opponent is, such as when gohan fought lavender.(this is also similar to when meditating as then you have a simpler time senseing your surroundings.)
also if you dont have your ki inside of your body, taking a hit will be detrimental compared to when having it filled with ki.
seeing as when goku got blasted in the back by friezas minion when in god form and got hurt really bad, but if he wouldve been for example powering up at that moment, the blast wouldve simply bounced off of his aura.
some who lack ki, cant even approach someone who has their ki spread around them as it seems like a brick wall!(source; goku first kamehameha versus jiren, and the filler fight of satans wrestling fighter going after cell)

As someone studying Japanese I have to take small objection to your definition of the word Ki. 気 (ki) is an extremely versatile word, most literally meaning "life," or "energy," but also encompassing the meaning of "spirit," and even "air." It's a very nebulous concept, and the word is used to describe multiple things depending on the context (basically all of Japanese is like this), but most accurately it could be referred to as "life force," or "life energy," not really something so specific as a "willingness to fight." This doesn't only apply to living things, everything that exists has Ki; though it might be more correct to say everything that exists _is_ Ki. Ki can also be used as a word for someone's feelings, mood, or intentions, such as the word 気分 (kibun) which literally means mood or feeling. So, Ki itself doesn't innately take on any kind of attribute. You could say "His ki (mood) is filled with fighting spirit," (he looks ready to fight) or "He is overflowing with Ki" (He looks energetic / filled with energy). While the word Ki obviously has its roots in oriental philosophy, in day to day conversation the word Ki is used very casually to describe these everyday concepts. Obviously Dragon Ball uses Ki much more literally in its "life energy" definition, but even then care must be taken to recognize that in and of itself Ki does not have any innate attributes, and even in the manga / anime is used in a very loose and flexible way to describe many concepts -- the ability to sense an opponent's strength, location, the ability to project energy as ki blasts, and even the ability to manipulate objects with your mind like telekinesis. Just as it is used in everyday Japanese life, the word Ki is used in Dragon Ball as a kind of "catch-all" for anything that could be described as energy. It's important to take a moment to focus on that word "energy," too, because even in English one must recognize that energy is not a physical thing, energy does not exist, it's a word to describe the potential that one thing has to affect another. There is kinetic energy, and there is thermal energy, but there is no true "energy" inside either of these things, the word energy is just used to describe how much "work" can be extracted from a given system, like a rotating wheel, or a heating boiler. From Buddhist perspective, though all these things are distinctively different, they are all unified under a single concept -- energy, or Ki. The force that drives all things in the universe.
Regarding the differentiation between things like 元気 (genki) and 神の気 (kami no ki, "energy of gods/spirits"), linguistically it would be fair to say these are just attributes of what is otherwise still the same nebulous Ki. In the case of kami no ki it's a little bit more of a blatant storytelling device, since it's literally just saying "Energy that is owned by/comes from the Gods," however genki is an extremely common and I'd venture even more versatile word than Ki itself. Attempting to literally translate genki wouldn't be very helpful, but the translation for how it is most _often_ used would be "health" or liveliness. However it's _literal_ translation is "origin ki," "ki origin," or "origin of energy." It is the root of all energy, in a sense, the absolute most basic form of life and existence, therefore the most basic form of Ki. The thing is that you can be genki in any attribute of life. You could be physically genki but not mentally genki. Genki can be used as a noun or an adjective, and it can even kind of be used like an adverb if you try hard enough. So you can have genki, you can be genki, and you can do things uh.. genki-ly. Though there is a positive aspect associated with the word genki, it should be noted that much like Eastern philosophy, many words to describe things positively in Japanese actually describe them as "normal," "balanced," or "centered." This is why if your Ki is Gen, i.e. your Ki is in it's Origin where it should be, you are in good health and/or spirit. The 元気玉 (genkidama, literally "genki ball") in Dragon Ball is so-called specifically to illustrate that it's drawing from this pure and ubiquitous form of energy. If Ki is simply energy, then Gen Ki is much more specifically energy that comes from living things. There is nothing to imply that the energy drawn from the genki dama is explicitly different from any other Ki, though we know from the series that the genki dama created on earth holds the thoughts and feelings of all those it came from (which relates fluidly back to Ki's encompassing meanings), there is no evidence to imply that all Ki does not technically exhibit these features -- naturally, it would be assumed that Goku's Ki contains his hopes and wishes just as the genki dama contained that of the people on Earth.

In the Italian dub Ki is referred as Aura.
Which is interesting because of course it is almost a synonim, ( An atmosphere or energy emitted by a person) but in Latin the root of the word Aurum means “Golden” which is the color of a Super Saiyan’s Ki.
The way I always interpreted the whole ‘ki vs god ki’ thing, is that smaller amounts of god ki can equal higher amounts of ki, so basically it’s more concentrated. For example, if we were to assign numbers to them, 10 God Ki is equal to 100 Ki, so the mortals without God Ki, just have high enough amounts of Ki to rival/surpass the ones with God Ki.

Hey I really enjoyed the concept of this video it was really informative and interesting, while were on this topic I was wondering if you could do a video on good vs evil ki. I think it would be interesting to see if there are differences in their properties or why some characters have evil looking auras in the first place, it's always interesting how goku can sometimes tell how evil a character is by feeling said ki. And overall can one be more powerful than the other depending on whether or not the character is more good or evil than the other

Even though the term “energy” was used a lot in the dub, in Raging Blast, the Funimation cast referred to energy as ki.
That was kind of a turning point around that time they started to refer to it as Ki a lot more even in Kai and so on I think.
It’s explained that the saying of the move is to help control it. They have to do the certain hand move ya to bring forth the energy.
Ka - The user brings his hands forward and aligns the base of the palms.
Me - The hands are brought down to the dominant side of the users body by the waist.
Ha - The user draws apart their hands and shape them into a form mimicking holding a sphere.
Me - The user draws out the ki they have been moving through their body up to this point to materialize it into their palms
Ha - The user aims at their target realigns the base of their palms and pulls back their fingers while pushing forward their arms forcing the energy forward.
Obviously they can become good enough to not have to say it but chances are in a fight sometimes you need the extra concentration.

I think ki at its simplest just comes down to physics. Kinetic energy is the exertion of potential energy, and potential energy is the energy you are capable of using. When people exert effort or an object is in motion, they are using kinetic energy because they are now using the energy they possess in action, and dragon ball is just the overexaggerated version of that. Energy has 3 forms in DB such as physical energy (physical strength, ki blast/release, speed, agility, durability, technique), mental energy (ki suppression, controlling and condensing ki, telekinesis, willpower), and spiritual energy (The alignment your energy is more likely to be used for; for good or malicious intent). Even Hakai and UI are just the individualized version of mental and physical energy. Dragon ball isn't that complex when you realize it's just basic functions thrown out of proportion.

In “All You Need is Kill,” the author Hiroshi Sakurazaka says that the purpose of a kiai is to push your body past it’s natural inclination to not over dangerously exert yourself. Don’t know what that’s based in but I can see it.

Also in the 80's movie "Last Dragon" Bruce Leeroy kind of goes Super Saiyin at the end and you see his ki aura around him and he finally beats the villain. They called it the power of the glow and the aura is yellow. I wonder if Toriyama got the SSJ idea from that?

It’s funny, I never really thought of the concept that the Spirit Bomb was made up of vital health energy, now it seems even more of a potent but last resort technique as you’re pulling from the ability of creatures to be healthy and alive. I love that in Japanese you cask “Genki Desu ka?” Which is understood as “how are you” but is essentially asking “how is your ki?”

That doesn't mean I'm asking if you're having a laugh, it comes from the medieval concept of the four humors (sometimes five) these elemental (as in fire, air, water, earth) vapors that affect your body.
I find it funny that while these two cultures are literally as far apart as possible they still have or had similar ideas on the nature of the natural world.

Great review as always, but not sure if you heard of popular Wuxia Novels/Film Series by Jin Yong 1955-1972. His stories like dragonball and most shounen manga heavily emphasizes on ki control, martial arts, and character development overtime. Personally, I feel he is like the Chinese founder of the Shounen Genre.
If you were to go into why they say the name of their moves, you could say that it's also how the move is activated/controlled or is stronger/enhanced when you call out the name of the move.
Well geekdom you are absolutely right that most people can not see chi and it is indeed because you need to develop your third eye. I have only been able to see my own ki once. So I can assure you that it is possible. Further more the way that toriyama actually gives chi form and color in the series is not very different from the reality. If I understand this correctly, Palpatines Force Lightning is the same thing as a Ki blast/wave because it's a physical representation of the Force or Ki in this case. Which means someone could use a Ki blade/sword to combat a lightsaber considering both are made of plasma and require the manipulation of the Force/Ki in order to wield. Unless Disney changed the canon on how lightsabers work lol

Wish they went into explaining how Ki worked further down the series, the advantages and even disadvantages of it. How it changes depending on the user. How it increases when the person is training, what causes the change of Ki went getting a power up etc.

It would be interesting to see if different ki colours have different meanings. Take lightsaber colours for example: blue represents combat ability, green represents force ability, red represents corruption and hatred etc etc.

No they wouldn't. They are purely stylistic. But the general trend by the anime seems to be yellow for heat and explosions(standard, quick blasts usually). Blue for force(which may explode).
And red is the stronger ones.
The rest are usually for villains. Darker colors like purple and black ect. Sometimes dark red.
But even geekdom said, that's not toriyamas idea or anything.
And there's exceptions like the kikoho being yellow. And Goku doing a quick bunch of blue blasts in a movie.

I don't know why people hated the midicholorian thing. I always hear people say that the "midichlorians created the force" or "midichlorians are the force". That isn't what was stated in The Phantom Menace or any Star Wars material. The Force is it's own thing, it's an energy field that binds everything together and has a will of its own. Midichlorians are simply the embassadors that allow for communication and connection between living things and the force. They translate the will of the force to people. They are the middle man or medium that allows Jedi and Sith to connect with and use the force. That's all they are.

I think it's that it's people having it biologically. Your connection to the force is a biological thing determined by a genetic amount of microbes.

There was a sort of lineage thing but there was also a spirit thing. The force is strong with my family as Luke said could just mean his family was deep in it. It sounds more like a gift. It wasn't as obvious of a genetic connection. Like Jesus and god. Son of God yeah. But you wouldn't assume it was genetic powers.
I'm indifferent to it tho. Awhile I heard an explanation I liked about it but I forgot it by now. So I'm back to indifferent.
@@DSan-kl2yc But there had to be something that determined if someone was force-sensitive or not. Otherwise anyone could be a force-sensitive and then all of a sudden the Jedi and Sith aren't special anymore.
It's also important to note that every living creature has midichlorians to some degree. It's just force-sensitives have many more midichlorians compared to the average living being. And who is to say that the force itself doesn't will certain beings to have more midichlorians, to be force-sensitive for reasons we don't understand?
There is still a mystical element to it, it's just the midichlorians expand on the relationship between living things and the force. Having a biological or physical aspect to it doesn't take away from the mystical view of the force in my opinion.
To use a Biblical example as you did, remember that the Bible teaches that even in Heaven people are given glorified bodies. So the physical/biological side of things, is still presented in many writings as a necessary part of having a complete existence.

What you said is accurate but you forgot to mention that ki is basically electric energy within the body.
The kanji 気 has two readings. The Japanese, or the Kunyomi reading, is Ki, sometimes romanized as Qi. The Onyomi, or original Chinese reading is chi. Nothing world-changing, just thought I'd throw this out here.
I've done alot of Martial Arts for 2 years next month I'm gonna be a Red Belt Month's later I'll be a Black Belt. I've done alot of Meditation since i was 12 years old.
What I love about The DB Franchise series? Answer Martial Arts. Just like how Batman uses his Martial Arts to battle his opponents. In DB how do they battle the bad guy's answer Martial Arts. My Martial Arts class taught me alot of techniques, life lessons, calm, strength, control, wisdom, gratitude, patients, and so much more.
It was amazing.

The power of yelling a move only works for the Kamehameha because its a verbal build up, all the other moves its for the show. To understand this go where no one can hear you and pretend to do the move twice. Once with no sound and the other yelling. The amount of energy you can draw up even just pretending will be drastically different yelling.
