The opening number from the Original Cast felt like the opening to a '70s sitcom or TV drama. In this version the opening makes me feel the tension inside Bobby right from the start.
The musical started off as 11 one-act plays by George Furth, who asked Sondheim to review them. Noticing a common theme, Sondheim later condensed the plays into what would become the first _concept_ musical , centered around marriage and the couples within it. Sondheim has a talent of noticing what is absent (as he would do with George in Sunday in the Park with George), and added Bobby as the third wheel which examines and connects all of these disparate vignettes. When opened, it was to a largely middle class audience who were seeking an escape from their middle class problems. Instead, they found their problems thrown right back at them. Critics loved it. After 50 years, this musical is still as relevant as _Carmen_ or _Othello_ , as these great works all touch on the essential parts of life, and no doubt will remain relevant far into the future.

@@walterwhite4862 thanks haha! it's just very all over the place and some of the characters seem very cartoony (plus i think i might be a bit young to properly relate to it)
@@hatchetfieldboatingsociety4146 Yeah that’s true lol the characters are kind of over the top. It’s supposed to be non-linear vignettes of times Bobby has had with his friends so that’s probably why it seems all over the place. A lot of arguments could be made as to why it’s structured that way (some say it all takes place in his head a second before Being Alive).
Honestly I really like most of this musical because I relate to bobby clearly not wanting to get married or really be in a long term relationship but getting pressured into thinking he has to, but the last song just bugs the shit out of me because he really just seems to not want to be romantically involved with people then suddenly just does this whole 180. I also really dislike that part because of the whole "alone is alone, not alive" thing because it's very invalidating to aromantic people such as myself.
Alone is alone, not alive to people who do have romantic feelings. It doesn’t have to be universal. Also if you watch Raul’s performance closely (plus the text), Bobby was never against relationships. He just didn’t understand what it meant to be in a real committed one since it requires giving up too much of himself and being vulnerable. He spends the whole show in denial and telling himself half-truths (Marry Me a Little). It’s not until Joanne helps him realize there’s a piece of him missing that he realizes he wants to get married even if it’s a challenge. I wouldn’t call it a complete 180. If it were a complete 180 then everything Bobby says throughout the musical is sincere, but it’s not.
Since you’re aromantic, it makes total sense that that’s how you interpret and relate to the rest of the show. Gay people seem to interpret the show as him being gay and not realizing it until the end. I think it’s fine if that’s how you relate to it. Bobby can’t be aromantic in my opinion though. He has multiple sexual relationships that are clearly also romantic.
I also see it as, he keeps so much of himself closed off and unavailable, even to his friends he’s not truly himself. But in the end, he realizes he wants those authentic relationships, even if they’re difficult and messy. For Bobby a large part of that is finding meaningful romantic love cause that’s who he is as a character. But I also think the “alone is alone, not alive” line has a lot of meaning for platonic friendships as well. Even if you don’t want romantic love, having friends with whom you can be your true self have a deep connection with is being alive
i completely agree with you. as i see it, the musical comes very close to questioning whether a stereotypical romantic relationship necessarily completes you, and a lot of the secondary characters' relationships are really interesting/non-traditional, but at the end it just falls back on the idea that we should be idealizing romantic relationships and that someone is incomplete without a spouse. it really seems to condemn the idea that you can be truly happy as a single person, but obviously many single people are happy. aside from disagreeing with that conclusion i do really like this musical.
The staging is really cool, the minimalistic design is super well utilized and the way the actors are also the musicians is a funny detail. But the line deliveries are suuuper flat and lack emotions and nuance.
I agree, but that’s also part of the direction. I think Doyle was trying to take out of its usual sitcomyness, but maybe he went a little too far in the other direction at times.
@@walterwhite4862 yes! i think this version vs the neil patrick harris as bobby version (i've only seen these 2 versions) are like very different in tones that it changes the ending feeling. like this version feels like it ends with a defeated bobby who feels he'll be alone forever, and the NPH version he feels more hopeful; like he's alone now but it won't be forever. He just needs to find a good connection.

@Walter White you worded my thoughts much better than I could lol
