- Filmed at JapanFest 2016 (www.japanfest.org/) at the Gwinnett Center in Duluth, GA.
For the 30th anniversary of JapanFest the Kabuki troop Miyabi-ya ( / miyabiyajapan ) performed short section from the tale of "Renjishi".
The story depicts the severe physical training the shishi cub must undergo at the hand of its parent. In order to foster courage and strength the parent kicks its young over the edge of the ravine and must wait anxiously to see if the cub can climb back up again. This is said to be a great test of the actor's abilities for he must portray fatherly love as well as a strict sense of discipline.
The pair of Kyôgen actors dance the story of the shishi parent and cub, one with white hair representing the parent shishi and the other with red hair to represent its child. A shishi is a mythological lion-like animal said to be the king of beasts and always associated with the Buddhist deity Monju. For this reason, any portrayal of the shishi should not only bring out its wild, beastial nature, but also a sense of dignity and authority that goes with this divine status. The shishi is in many ways a spiritual creature.

My apologies for the poor camera work. I was shooting freehand with everything on full-automatic tying my best to get a good shot without causing anyone else to have their view obscured.

wow dude that dragon hit me right in the feels.
Ohhhh now that i think about it i think "Jiraiya's"(From NARUTO)appearance was inpired by these Kabuki dancers i think,if i remember correctly i think?...
Yupp, Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru are characters from a Japanese folktale called Jiraiya gouketsu monogatari based on which there is a kabuki drama.
Is the role the White Fox Devil? The dance is so exquisite, swift and smooth. The costumes are visual grandeur.
The music is so lively
Spectacular!
jiraiya is that you?? 🤔🤔 😂😂
Rizki Andika nice one lol 🤣👍💔
No it's not NinjaBlack.
Also Kumadori from CP9. Mangakas love to put those bits of japanese folklore in their works.
Well i think the inspiration for Jiraiya came from Kabuki dancers if i remember correctly.

The Dance of Jiraiya
The modern era is so boring. If only we could return to these days of old again. But I know that there was a lot of suffering in the old days. That life was hard. The modern world has its ups.

This looks like Jiraiya. Even the singer sounds similar to him lol
that´s the style and voice for kabuki and noh theatre.
🤣😂🤪
why can only men perform kabuki? like why do they dress as women characters?
watch an anime on soulanime.com titled kabuki :)
It's been like this for a long time. Male actors acting in women roles are traditionally called "onagata".
It's been tradition in Japan for since Kabuki was born, Women weren't allowed to take part in theater so they used men for both sides.
蛇だ🐍 これは 苦手
Zone Tan Kabuki was started by women. 25 years after it began it was taken over by men.
Pretty sacred art
