I react to the internal selection song "What they say" by Victor Vernicos, which will represent Greece in Semi Final 2 of Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool, UK in May 2023.

I never knew he was 16! Crazy how he has a grown man's voice!
This reminds me a little of 'My Last Breath' from James Newman. Not offensive, different to everything else this year, but very very safe and middle of the road. A voice like Victor's deserves something grand.
He is clearly very talented but I otally agree, 16 is way too young for a contest like this. I hope he is really well supported and looked after by his delegation and I genuinely wish him all the best.
Age doesnt matter, say it to Cristian Costov
Considering of this year's trashes songs, it is a decent song.
His lyrical writing is good and for him to have made the cornerstones of the song at 13 is SERIOUSLY impressive, but yeah, it doesn't stand out enough for me.
I quite like this; to me it reminds me slightly of Rosa-Linn's "Snap", kind of a guitar pop boppy song. Slovenia sounds more retro to me, Cyprus more bombastic pop, so I think this will stand out in semi 2. There's something about his vocal in the verses that seems kinda weird, like it's a bit of a trick, but the chorus is better. Not really into the clapping part. Overall though, it's enjoyable and I wish him the best of luck. I do wonder sometimes whether there's anyone in Greece left who wants to participate in Eurovision?
I love this song , the lyrics, the rythm of the song.. everything!! He has such an amazing and deep voice.. It's absolutely in my top ten.. it's such an emotional song.
Good luck to Greece ❤️
I wish Greece would lean into a more ethnic sound. There's a lot of great Greek music that I'd like them to showcase at the contest
from previous years videos, i remember many greeks saying they wanted to move away from ethnic sounding bops, to show that they have much more than that
We have enough ethnic already, greece makes quality international sound and i like it
@@ESCTom we haven't sent an ethnic song literally forever! Producers always sent a generic English pop song from a person with scendinavian connections hoping to recreate Paparizou win, as if the cintestest haven't changed the last 20 years. The return of the national final is desperately needed
It's just that none of the last songs we've sent really represented the Greek musical landscape
Ηoping for the Netherlands too !
I really like his voice and drama! And I can imagine a very personal intimate performance that would surprise us all.
I think the song is too low impact, it doesn't really feel like Greece imo
Yea well they’ve had this image revamp for the last 4-5 years now. This is their new vibe
Another rare song from semi 2 that i like
I think this is the most British entry that Greece has ever had. He sings great and the song is decent, but the production is really bad in my opinion.
I don't understand why Greece lost so much quality at Eurovision. Don't get me wrong. The song isn't terrible. But it's also nothing special. When I think of Greece at Eurovision, the great songs of the 2000s spring to mind. Something like "Die for you", The Songs of Sakis Rouvas, "Secret Combination", "Yassou Maria", "OPA" and many others. Those were songs that were very authentic and where you knew immediately that it was a Greek entry. And mostly these songs were rewarded with a good or very good ranking. Why is Greece not sending songs like this anymore? Is it for financial reasons? That wouldn't make sense to me because there would be newcomers in Greece who could sing something more interesting than Victor Vernico's song..Or are they afraid of not qualifying yourself anymore, because their very greek contributions from 2016 and 2018 flopped? (those were great songs). In my opinion, Greece is in an absolute downward spiral, at least as far as the songs are concerned, which these rather average songs now prove again. The last results were quite okay. But I miss the time when big stars were sent. Since 2019 they have only resorted to newcomers who don't even live in Greece. Very strange.
It is hilarious that you think popular songs like secret combination, opa or yassou maria, for crying out loud are of higher quality that THIS 😂. I agree, this is not eurovision material but it is by far a better song.
@@johny7even not much of a difference tbh
Very Lewis Capaldi.. could work for Tik Tok and Liverpool in Eurovision.
This song for me is just very hard to listen to. Something about his voice and the instrumentals are clashing and mixing so weird... I'm curious how this will sound and look live on stage. 🤷🏻♂️ So far it's nq for me....
Draw was pretty kind to them, not just Cyprus, but Albania and the Caucasus seem to have some fixation with Greece, and less than 40 points might be enough. I don't think we really need it in the final though.
I don't think it's bad by any stretch, but I totally agree that they'll need to get the staging right to qualify. They benefit from being in the "weaker" semifinal.
The easiest we could do and smash the competition is to send a super hyper greek ethnic bop, please the masses and make some Opa moments and all of that cliché. I am more than happy my country just focuses on sending international sounds and promoting young artists sticking to the plan of promoting this fresh side of greek music. I'm not saying greek ethnic cannot be quality, on the contrary, of course it can, but for the majority of Greeks this kind of music is not current anymore. That being said, it may be some "authentic " greek comeback in the future, meanwhile I enjoy all our entries the last few years and I hope we keep on that track 😇😌
Yea many Greeks have said this to me that they want to move on from the ethnic bops and tbh I don’t think those bops would work anymore like they used to in the 00s. I think the middle ground is something like kaza Mostra. I actually really liked Argo as well.
Decent ... Forgettable... Ok for radio. Not for Eurovision.
If I hear that song on Radio... I will just change station
At this point, Greece's and Switzerland's songs are blending in my mind, and they're just a blur...
You could put Cyprus right with them, for me that's just one long song I don't particularly enjoy
@@Tollkirschenkind You're right. The problem was I completely forgot about Cyprus 😬
@@danielely3807 at least the guy from Cyprus cute😂 so that’ll help him
I’m quite disappointed in this considering Greece 2022 was in my top 5
Totally agree. Very underwhelmed. Such a drop from last year.
@@yodenman 100%. I also liked last dance from 2021, so I had quite high expectations for them. But this is unfortunately at the bottom of my list
@@ohbitxc9793 yes... forgot about 2021. That was excellent too.
Hmmmmmm........Dermot Kennedyesq, without being Dermot Kennedy?
Yeh, not really for me Tom.
Even if this does qualify from semifinal 2, this really won't make much of an impression in the final, will it?
That in itself is the main disappointment with this entry.
Greece really should be slaying.....but not this year im afraid
😢
Yea it’s actually quite weird to have a lacklustre Greek entry. The last one of those for me was freaky fortune
Completely agree that 16 is too young and imo this song is so bland I feel bad for him
The song is ok, but the verses, especially the second one, are too long. And unfortunately the poor production didn't fix the structural weakness, nor it lifted the song with a more impressive orchestration.
All in all, the song seems incomplete.
Why would Panic bother blocking this?! I'd have thought they would welcome any possible interest in the competition's most forgettable song so far.
Theyve always done heavy heavy blocks as long as I’ve done this channel
This is very British very Lewis capaldi I actually like it but not really like it its sitting around 16/17 in my ranking
Nadav Guedj was 16 in 2015 and he did very well:)
yes thats true. he was on stage with 4 others. it looks like Victor may be on his own though
@@ESCTom true, that is more difficult - he should get some back up!
Nadav had 3 dancers and 2 back up singers
This will struggle to qualify, it still could, but it may struggle
lool i knew he looked like smbd familiar ty tom :)))))
he is 16 and performs this old-fashioned ballad that sounds silimar to these 2010s ballads we know from recent year? Come on, he could have brought something more modern sitting more his age 🙁
I am sure he doest not listen to this kind od music, right? It feels forced and unathentic...
He is the composer, producer and lyricist of the song! So it can't be more personal! He wrote the song after a psychological burn down of his at the age of 14! He has my full support.
Hurry up Caucasus countries, I'm eagerly awaiting the return of Tom's whiteboard and magnetic flags analyses!
no whiteboard, but ive still got the flags and ill find something else magnetic 😂
I like this song. It is nice, thought some of the rhythm changes seem a bit odd. He performs well and sings well. The lyrics seem pretty good. I would be happy to listen to this on the radio but it is not a song I would vote for.
I love how you say switch on the subtitles haha
some people were telling me i was talking too quickly 😭
The fact the Greek entrant wasn’t even alive when Eurovision was in Greece is upsetting to me
😅
I don't think they will be saying much this year
😅
He has a gorgeous voice. I wish he had a better song. This is a NQ
It’s a bad dermot Kennedy song … not a fan
Haha I saw that name banded around in the Irish OGAE group too. I’ve never heard of him
i like the song, but i need a live performance as in the mv, he does not project the emotions of the song to the audience.
This is...fine. I've put it at Number 21 in my rankings, and I can see it yoyo-ing around the mid 20s for me over the coming weeks...
He sounds like James Arthur to me.
Lewis Capaldi, George Ezra, James Arthur.
I’m calling cultural appropriation on this one 😁😁
Greece to me have really lost their identity over the years to me.
When I started watching Eurovision in mid 00s they seemed to me they sent a distinctive sound but from 2014 Greece seemed to have stopped really and UK always seemed to give them high points.
They now seem to send half Greek Artists, Katerine, Stefania and Amanda, all pleasant songs but to me missing the spark they use to send in the past like Opa and Alcohol is Free and many others.
I hate to say but this is not a memorable song for me. Which means, it will be at near bottom of my Spotify playlist. The kid still has a good future but in the Eurovision realm, the song might not catch the televoters' attention. The videography is a bore as well. Not well thought.
Wow, I didnt realise he looked that much like Cillian Murphy, but now that you mention it 😂.
I seem to be in the minority because I do like it, I dont know if it has enough punch in the studio version (same issue with Switzerland) but I hope itll be more impactful live.
It does feel more mainstream, something I could see UK voters voting tbh and possibly Australia.
I think like Blanka, the reaction to this song (being mostly negative) seems to be amplified by how it was selected.
Ill be honest, i know why people want the likes of Finland or Serbia (type entries) at esc (dont mind serbias song) but in all fairness, I dont really get the arguement of, ughh this isnt for Eurovision, like I think mainstream sounding songs can do well and have done well in eurovision, they just need to be staged well, Sweden being a prime example of that and Estonia last year sounded quite mainstream and finished left hand side.
Im guessing, people are thinking its because the song doesnt have a moment or doesnt build like perhaps youd expect an esc song to do but that can be done through staging.
This might sound like a strange thing to say but having diversity in songs at esc means that their could be 1 or 2 songs that sound like this in a year and tbh I think having multiple entries that are sort of out there and different can end up hurting some countries taking a risk or sending something more televote appealing like France last year and Norway, I think both of them were somewhat forgotten because Serbia, Moldova and Ukraine did so well with the televote. If for arguements sake you had Croatia, Finland, Serbia,Portugal, and Germany (im sure theres more but I can't think of them off the top of my head)in the final, they wont all do equally as well as each other, two or possibly three will jump out to televoters and the rest wont score as high as perhaps expected because like with having loads of ballads, pop songs etc, people will gravitate towards certain ones but the songs they dont pick wont necessarily get as many points, I think people can forget that at times.
Back to Greece, the only songs I could really compare this to are Switzerland and Cyprus.
I know people dont love mainstream sounding songs at esc but I think if they're staged well, why not? Loreen's is staged well and she's a favourite to win it out, I think people need to wait to see the staging for this song (and other internally selected songs) because that can change everything.
Middling for me. My big issue was that I was struggling to understand what he was saying. I fast forwarded when the slow clap came on, sooo much cringe
I do like this, Greece is in my top 5 this year, but I'm worried about qualifying as normally the fandom don't care about quality songs like these and prefer joke entries (Finland) or bops ( Norway, Israel and UK)
Finland isn´t a joke entry in any way. It´s carnevalistic, thoughtful, clever and catchy at the same time and it´s very professional.
@David Z I don't judge your taste for liking Finland, music is personal and if you like that song it's fine. It's not my cup of tea, the staging seems a joke to me, just my opinion
as a casual viewer that doesn t know the lyrics, or the thought behind finland s song....i find it a joke as well.
after a few listens i started liking it but still i find it a bit of a joke entry, so i understand what you are saying. I t seems like people care only about instant catchers.....so bops or jokes and i am kinda tired with that
@@fdr103 Fair enough, but I don´t find it a joke entry at any level. There is very much thought and effort behind Finland´s entry.
@@carl-johanfougstedt199 i ll check out the lyrics and the singer to try to appreciate it more. Regardless of what it is i for sure enjoy it very much
This song is sitting at my 28th place, which sounds really harsh but… it is what is is (I have a song in 24th that I quite like but everything below kind of drops off a bit).
It’s decent, and I’ll give him props for writing & producing. I tend to like introspective songs-when they’re interesting-but this song is a bit forgettable, even though it’s different from other songs in the semi. Just not for me 😢
