    I have recently bought a similar kit that comprises of a ws2812b LED strip, and an arduino uno in a little box. I use the same android ambilight application. I am surprised that your setup looks like that as mine is as close to perfect as can be, unless of course the application has been updated since you made this video. I found that the app only needed a few minor tweaks once set up. I turned green up and red and blue down a touch. Now it can create decent browns where as previously any brown colour was a pinky red. Personally I think this solution is amazing and works brilliantly.

    I just got an ambilight kit from China with the ambibox and a led strip that had 60led/m. The quality / brightness is really excellent. Also, I got better result than in your video somehow. the feature that copies the screen color is super accurate and fast. You can run a test video on RUclips made to test this feature.
    The app is relatively simple imo.
    And as you said, I’m dying for à this feature to be available on RUclips/Disney + or other video plateforme.

    Google Home integration and a Phone app would be great because the Android TV haves Google assistant built in, and for the TV's with a mic on the remote you could just tap the mic and say to turn the TV strip ( or whatever you named it on the Google home app) and it would do it! No need to open the app! What you think?

    The only way I could see your design working is if you can get software like hyperion or prismatic in app form for tvs then run it off USB. Or going a step further using colour detecting sensors placed around TV that then controls the rgb lighting behind the tv.

    Instead of counting the LEDs (which you stated as a negative item) you could also have the customer measuring the height/width of his/hers TV and submit these values in your Android App.
    In the "background" of your app these values are devided by the amount of LEDs/m to come to the amount of LEDs.

    Looking forward to a finalized product. I have a few questions about usage:
    1. Will it work with a ShieldTV?
    2. Will it work with Kodi (There have even been Kodi plugins that had similar functionality to the app you showcased, but I think they are all dead now)
    3. What happens if you run Kodi with the netflix or prime plugin, which uses your credentials to watch content? I wonder if it would translate the light when watching those services through the Kodi platform.
    I'm not against counting LED's, I think it's a very minor inconvenience. Additionally, you could add numbers near the LED's as someone mentioned below, which would simplify it for those who are struggling with that.

    • @Chuck21234
      @Chuck21234 4 года назад

      Just as an update - I believe that this WILL work with the Prime video plugin for Kodi - I say this because I just tried using anydesk to remote into my Shield TV and was able to start a prime video from the plugin, and it played (it was choppy but I was transmitting video through wifi to my laptop, I think a direct connection through USB would not be as big of a deal) - I was able to see the video on anydesk.
      Sadly, it looks like the netflix plugin for Kodi still blocks the screen sharing through anydesk, so it wouldn't likely work there.

    i would love to see this more developed. i would love to be a tester as well if that is something you are in need of. looks like the issue might be due to a single light strip being used instead of separate light strip for each sector TOP, LEFT, BOTTOM, RIGHT. maybe add an adjustment option to only work with each sector and set the # of lights being used for the sector or maybe a setting where you set it to the screen size so it only does the border of that screen size and not the entire screen being captured. just some food for thought. LOVE this project for years and gald to see someone still trying to develop it further. Let me know if i can be a tester for you and give you feedback. THANKS!!

    This should be done within the TV's firmware. If the signal is not leaving the telly you are just can't do it. I have an android box so it would be easy for me, cause all the signal came outside (aside the coax). I had a silly idea to mount a mini projector in the back and mirror the signal :D but couldn't figure it out how, and I rejected it. Maybe miracast or something?

    • @TechMagnet
      @TechMagnet  4 года назад

      Well yea some TVs put out the signal on analoge but that’s also crap. We now think about using our own app for it with better recording and algorithm but then still Netflix and prime would be an issue. Same for normal tv if u close android. IPTV however is working fine. A hybrid box with usb and app and hdmi would be a solution to cover a lot but still has limitations... let’s see if there is a way

    we in India know how to do this for cheap . you don't need hdmi signal for this. all you need is a mini Arduino led of right lumens and an SMPS with correct ampere so that it supports fast led feature in the Arduino software programming. you need to count your LED exact and mark the direction in the app you referred to and change no other settings in the app.
    viola you have ambilight that works and looks better than Phillips ambilight.

    Since it is impossible to beat Netflix and other stream services screen capture avoiding systems, I think you should make the product work with HDMI 2.1. Even the smartest TV's OS and Apps get outdated in 2-3 years so everybody needs either Apple TV or MiBox etc. Smart Tv solution is not worth your effort and it is very hard to maintain the App for all Tv systems. I would rather buy a MiBox for 50-60$ and not worry about anything else. But you have to do this hardware keeping hdmi 2.1 in mind. Because I don't want to have 60Hz instead of 120Hz when connecting my Sony PS5

    The problem is AndroidTV flickering those all the time while standby 😅
    Apparently AndroidTV does something power related with usb ports in every few minutes. 🤔
    It doesn't work when you sleep and TV is standby but leds are flickering all the time. If it isn't one, its the other attached port and so on..
    If i could manually switch off power from USB so i wouldn't have to untap 3 usbs when i switch TV off.
    Or,. I just buy that Philips over Sony,.. But only becouse of Ambilight?
    Ugh 😬

      I use a 4k 1 to 2 HDMI splitter, run one directly to my TV and the other to an HDMI to USB capture card, that gets plugged into the Nvidia Shield. I then use the USB Cam APK and set my proper settings to that screen capture. Pretty easy setup, from the Shield you can run USB to an Arduino/clone as your LED driver (with attached PSU).

  • @JolanRensen
    @JolanRensen 4 года назад

    I like how you found a problem and you're just solving it yourself :)
    I don't think you can capture the colors of say Netflix from just software due to drm limitations. You can't even take screenshots in the app (I believe).
    I'm not sure you can even cast your screen while playing Netflix...

    • @JolanRensen
      @JolanRensen 4 года назад

      What would be ideal (I think) is if you were able to output everything on Android TV to two displays where the second one (connected to the LED strip) mirrors the first (your TV screen). Android does have the ability to have multiple screens (like turning phones into desktop mode etc) but I'm not sure how that works and if it works without modifying the firmware (or rooting).

    • @JolanRensen
      @JolanRensen 4 года назад

      Although, most Android TVs do have an easy "enable adb over WiFi" toggle in their developer options (at least my Nvidia shield does, you should check your TV). Adb might help to get some extra rights that would normally require rooting.
      If there's no option to turn on adb over WiFi, it can also be enabled via USB using an app like Bugjaeger (if your TV has a micro USB or USB c port).
      Anyways, just putting out my thoughts, hope it helps!

    • @JolanRensen
      @JolanRensen 4 года назад

      Actually, you should check the "Simulate Secondary Display" option in the Android developer options. That display mirrors the first, which is what you'd want! There's also an option for secure displays (although Netflix still shows green when played through that for me).
      But I don't know if starting up such a virtual display requires system permissions or not, so yeah, worth exploring!

    • @TechMagnet
      @TechMagnet  4 года назад +2

      @@JolanRensen exactly. the problem right now is that the software is really recording the screen that triggers drm. in fact not a whole screen recording is not needed. lets see where we end up. But even a hybrid usb hdmi solution thats cheap would be a good deal for most :) problem is the processing power of the smart tvs aswell :(

    • @evildrago
      @evildrago 4 года назад

      TechMagnet I’m doing research on this as I am interested in upgrading my home theater. I have a samsung tv, so my options are limited to HDMI as the store doesn’t support android apps. Using the ARC port and ISB for power and a control box with a WiFi connection to use a smart phone to setup the light option. This way you get the video feed from HDMI ARC port and the ability to fine tune the lights through the app on a phone while looking at a picture. Also, this will help prevent any deciding issues from Netflix and other apps. Since ARC is a bidirectional port the apps on the TV will still decode through it.

    I bought a Panasonic 4K HD Smart TV…and the Aurora Ambient lights. (Thinking this was going to be straightforward and cheaper than getting the Phillips TV).
    I don’t have a computer to connect. I only have an iPad, therefore, I would need to download the App on the TV and do it as you have suggested. Only thing is, the App doesn’t come up and when I click on Marketplace App to try and find it, nothing is there.
    There are two other Apps that I need that aren’t there either…Disney + and Apple TV, so I’m going to have to get the Amazon Fire Stick anyway.
    Will I be able to get the App that I need for the lights via the Fire Stick also? Or is there another way to go about this?
    I know, I should have just bought the Phillips TV but hindsight is a wonderful thing!

    Change the rgb byte order in the settings to get the correct colours. Some strips are GRB for example. No Netflix and prime is a bummer, this must be due to the drm. I wonder if rooting can solve this.

    It might never work on the software side of things because of protected content. Another app can't intercept what's on the screen. That's why it doesn't work when playing things on Netflix. I think the best thing to use is a dumb TV and an android box with which you can intercept the HDMI signal (raspberry pi method).
    Guys...

    I wish they would just expand the HDMI ARC spec to OUTPUT low-resolution video with the audio. That would be hugely enabling.

    Great video! I just bought all the parts for the pi solution, but I'm about to get my gf's dad's old smart TV, so this would be much better! What do you use for the controller and how do I make my own? I already have the light strip. How/where can I follow this project?

    Please Make sure that it works with a non android based TV like my Samsung Smart TV that is not an android based operating system.
    Please let me know when you have your box ready and I'll be the first one to buy one. I just bought the Ambilight LED Strip Kit to find out that #1 only works with Android TVs and #2 perfect for PC setup that has its on program that you can download from a website. I wanted it for my TV.

    You said ‘quite strange the color...’ , you got a screen 3:2, but you set it under android ambilight app to 2:1
